All-Star Games c/d?

So the NHL All-Star Game is upon us, and like most exibition games of this type they take up the whole weekend now. I never watch the NHL All Star Game, mostly due to the fact that I hate seeing goalies get shelled and no fighting (this stems from bloodlust and from playing goal myself).

Last night my roomate and I commented that we didn't know anyone who had watched a/the Pro-Bowl. We came to understand that we had been told that there was no hitting and that no one cared, but we had never witnessed it ourselves.

Baseball's Mid Summer classique has the whole "winner decides homefield in the WS" thing, and it could be the only instance that two teams of ringers are interesting to watch.

I don't care about basketball, but comment away...

MLB = "This time it counts"... Gagne blew the save in 03 allstar game allowing Les Marlines (a better team on the road) to beat Los Yanquis in NYC = Gagne getting Cy Young = gygax! sad.

Baseball's is the best by far, and was before the home-field (which only started last year anyway). You get to see the best pitchers battle the best batters for 27 outs. What could be better than that? I went this year too! Blalock's home-run was insane.

The basketball game is probably second in terms of entertainment/competitiveness. But since the NBA generally sucks it's hard to get too excited about it.

I usually watch some of the Pro Bowl, or at least have on in the background. People deride the fact that unlike all other sports, it comes at the end of the season, but I kinda like it for that very reason; I'm such a football junkie it can hard to come down from the thrill of the season (especially after this year - perhaps the best series of playoffs I've ever witnessed). The Pro Bowl provides one last opportunity to see these guys again, even if they aren't playing at full speed. Actually, I used to care about it a lot more when my team (Detroit Lions) actually sent some representatives every year. Getting to see Barry Sanders and Herman Moore play in one more game removed a bit of the sting from their regular first-round playoff exits.

Hockey's is kind of pointless for the reasons cited. And I love hockey! But the 9-7 type scores are kind of a joke. Although I really liked it when they experimented with the North America Vs. Eurasia format. I don't know why they decided to go away from that.

Oh, and actually I think the Pro Bowl overlaps some with the Grammys this year, which sucks. Normally I wouldn't give two shits about the Grammys, but there is actually an intriguing line-up this year. These are the times I need two TVs.

Or one VCR?

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know why they decided to go away from that.

Mostly because no one cared -- it was a buildup to the Olympics and the second World Cup which has taken eight years to be re-done. Also because you ended up with teammmates playing AGAINST each other, which is bad news...

ModJ (ModJ), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but teammates playing against each other makes it interesting! I mean, like you said, there is no checking anyway either way.

Leee - Nah, if I taped one or the other I'd probably never watch it. Like, I've honestly never had any desire to buy a Tivo either. That's just the way I am. REAL TIME baby!

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I don't tape games either for the same reason.

The only All Star games that are worth watching are the ones where the players get to where their own team unis.

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

...and get TWIB coverage.

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Baseball is definitely the best, but that whole winner gets homefield advantage for the world series is moronic. I honestly don't remember if I've ever watched a Pro Bowl. Far better was the old college all-stars vs. the Superbowl Champ game. (Or am I just imagining that?)

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds about as real as Ali boxing Superman

ModJ (ModJ), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ali boxing Superman is totally real! I saw the comic book!

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all about Battle of the Network Stars, not this fake pro league crap.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 February 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Salmon is correct - they actually did used to hold a college all-stars vs. Pro game, but it was long before the Super Bowl era. I'm not sure if it was the NFL champ (pre AFL/NFL-merger) or what.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 6 February 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, wait; some quick googling reveals I was wrong. It started before the Super Bowl era, but it actually lasted until 1976!

In way olden times (i.e. the Original Six) I think the NHL had the previous year's champions play the rest of the league's All-Stars. Tough to do that now with 30 teams. It might be more interesting for a bit, but there would still be no defense.

Like everyone else said, baseball's the best of a bad lot in North America.

If you want to see each side score 150 points, the NBA rookie vs. sophomore game is great fun
