It's getting to be that time.....

For those without radiators feel free to describe any other household item that shakes, wibbles, whines, or mews!

It's so annoying I prefer feeling cold. It makes this clangy noise.

Our dog Paco goes: "chingchingchingching" (sound of tags and collar rattling as he scratches his ear), "snurfsnurfsnurf" (sound of him chewing and licking obsessively at his tail), "ermermermerm" (sound of him whining pathetically at the front door while Hank and his bandmates are taking a smoke break on the porch), "clickclickclackclickclickclack" (sound of his toenails as his paces around our bed while we're busy sleeping. .or something.)

he's a noisy dog.

Does anyone know WHAT that violent clangy noise actually IZ? (nick?)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Radiator Rats, a mutated form of subaquatic rats which live and breed in the immersion heater and often get flushed into the radiator system when they are asleep. The noise you hear is them trying to get back to the nest.

Oh God, I knew it.

I have a portable heater with a sort of grill on top, I scrape a microphone across it to make samples for my Concertmate 500. It makes a deathly clanky sound.

james, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They bang, very, very, very, VERY loudly when they first come on. Like people on the phone scream "What the hell is that!" when they hear it, people on the phone can't hear ME over the banging sometimes. It dies down after a month, it's from the air pressure building up I guess. Then they just make a faint hissing noise.

Ally, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apart from a few rattles when it's first turned on, mine are silent.

DavidM, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it goes tap tappety tap all the day, oh yay.

rainy, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

whoooosh, whoooosh, CLANK CLANK, whooosh.

phil, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

bm... bm... bwm... CLUNK.

That was my radiator, by the way, and not my cat or anything.

Rebecca, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

we don't have radiators. hence the evocative dog sounds you were blessed with.

Sam-at-home, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geoff, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

twelve years pass...

i've never been around noisy old radiators before. i thought my upstairs neighbor was practicing to be a drummer, on his floor. or fidgety. then maybe that he was himself banging on the radiator to dislodge something. now maybe it's just the radiator. i don't know. i almost dislike the uncertainty more than the tapping. if i could know for sure it was the radiator i could accept it. but if it's a noise from a person AT ALL ire will surge forth righteously from me and i will bang on the ceiling and feel like i have gotten to say my piece.

A couple of our radiators bang pretty loudly every couple of hours. I think I need to bleed them, which is probably one of those very simple home maintenance thing that intimidates me much more than I need to let it.

It's really easy to bleed radiators and I am a moron with home repair. At least I remember it being easy the one time I did it.

Mine don't bang, but they HISS like a MOTHERFUCKER sometimes. We have them on either side of the bed so it's a stereo effect.
