The Stranglers didn't like it one bit. Wrote a song about it ("All Quiet on the Eastern Front").

Swedish Erotica is renowned. The Swedes do dig their smut.

tell me something about sweden that doesn't involve smut or buxom blondes

so we can't talk about ABBA, then?

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Do a search on google.

Tell me about Sweeden when you're done with the search.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

aja is smarter than all of us smarty-assed 20/30 somethings.

i went to sweden 9 nine years ago, and spent 3 days in stockholm. it was nice. that was all i know about the place. and the trains are also very nice and run on time.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

is aja being arch or really ingenuous?

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. And I accidently spelled Sweden "Sweeden."

Aja (aja), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

and the chicks ARE knockouts. but i like blondes.

This most prolly 'll be of not too much use for you, amateur!st, but anyways.
It was Sweden's king Gustav Adolf (whose exact serial number, alas, I somehow have always trouble remembering correctly ...was it II?) who founded the unversity in my home town, Tartu, in 1632. That was a really smart thing to do. (It would have been even smarter if Sweden had won a few more wars with Russia but, well, even Sweden can't have everything I guess :)
The first record I heard by the fine Swedish group Fleshquartet (no buxom blondes in their line-up, but they have recorded with Stina Nordenstam) was titled Goodbye Sweden. It has a Greta Garbo sample on it.
Landskrona, a smallish town by the sea, seems to be one beautiful place amongst many. My good, and only, Swedish friend lives there, that's how I know.
Other than that - and now I may be moving into the cliche sphere - Swedes's painstaiking PC-ness (nothing much to do with computers in this case) and their sometimes peculiar sense of humour still keep amusing me, but maybe that's just me.
Okay, they have a load of good'n'great ice hockey players too! :)

taking sides - Norway v. Sweden

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 8 February 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been a few times to Malmo, Gothenburg, and Stockholm, all worth a visit though I prefer Norway.

I don't know any Swedish literature.

i went for a weekend last january. really cold, but very beautiful.

it's really expensive, that isn't a myth. i can probably send you a list of 'cool' places to go, if you're interested. i had a few emails from various natives on where to go, and it was worth looking at.

i went to both the ice bar and the ice gallery. they're basically set up to make you want to go to the ice hotel (which it did). they're buildings made of ice and, although it's gimmicky, it's really neat as well.

i stayed in one of the main hostels and it was reasonably priced and centrally located. if you go when the weather is nicer you can stay in the hostel on a boat.

the people were really nice once i approached them. since i was traveling on my own, i had to go up and talk to people, but they really took me under their wings.

i really liked it, and want to go back in the summer. like i said, i've got more specifics on my computer at work, so i'll try to post them later.

I stayed on the boat hostel on Langholmen (sic), which is very fun. The modern art museum in Stockholm is particularly good. Swedes are not especially friendly, that isn't a myth either.

The Tivoli in Stockholm is fun, and at night it brings to mind The Jetsons.

Sodermalm (southern, traditionally working-class part of Stockholm) is well worth a visit.
