At the Henry Fonda Music Box theater. Great show. ...rummaging around...Where are my Vans and hair jell?

Skottie, Sunday, 8 February 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Do hipsters wear Vans?

webcrack (music=crack), Sunday, 8 February 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe? They played a show out here and it was sold out.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 8 February 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

No, of course not. Those were MY Vans! And real hipsters have no hair, so that's out too.

Skottie, Sunday, 8 February 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

They were friendly, energetic, played well and generally put on a great show. I worry for their future, however, based on the crowd. It was the kind of show that single-mom brings the teenagers and then shares their dope with them.

Skottie, Sunday, 8 February 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shins are NOT hipster. If you'd seen The Locust in Downtown LA, THAT would be hipster.

andy, Monday, 9 February 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Did Marty Crandall talk about nougat?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

According to some people, if you do anything in Hollywood, you're a hipster.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

If you care about being a hipster, then you're not a hipster.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh .. I saw Finch from American Pie at that show! He was bouncing to the Beastie Boys on the stereo system! He is TEH ULTEMATE HIPSTAR

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

dean, you starf*cker!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, leave me alone. I just stood behind him. If it makes you feel any better, I made it a point to furiously breathe down his neck.

(also i rode in an elevator with bob odenkirk on saturday how cool is that omglolololololorlfoalfofoflolololomg)

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, teasing you dean! that's the word you used to describe the clientele of a bar *I* frequent!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

We'll have to get your two hipsters together so the whole world can be overcome by your coolness (I will be the useless hanger-on) -- actually, speaking of which, we need to get the planning of the formerlynordicskillz FAP going.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, we need another LAFAP ASAP.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't there like a ton of newish LA ilxors?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

If that makes you a hipster, then I could be a hipster, too. And that is so patently absurd that it refutes the logic right there.

Aimless, Monday, 9 February 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, please note that I loved the Finch character!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I rode in a van with two Apples in Stereo to see The Shins, and I'm still so unhipster that, when I try to play songs on jukeboxes in trendy hipster locales the digital display will actually spell out "Puh-leeze, you think I'm really gonna let you subject these digital camera-wielding blogger beauties to PRIMUS!?! Go back home, loser".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't there like a ton of newish LA ilxors?

There seems to be a squad. Anyway, Nordicskillz keeps trying to revive the old thread so maybe it's time for a new one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, teasing you dean! that's the word you used to describe the clientele of a bar *I* frequent!

The Dime?

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wait I wear Vans too! And they are the old school white on black! K-CLASSIC

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I too saw shitbrick and the shins show, and no, i did not fuck him.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, I thought it was "shitbreak?"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno.. all i know is that hes tall in real life and all his posse were also tall. saw the backs of many-a-head at that show.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

He likes fat dudes, that SHIPWRECK.

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

shitbreak

luna (luna.c), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

But anyways, Skottie ... have you ever been to the Henry Fonda before? It's always like that. Definitely avoidable.

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The last show I saw there was Loop like 12 years ago.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

No hipsters live in LA. I should know; I live in Brooklyn. I might go to the Shins show at Irving Plaza, but only if I get on the list, and I would leave after Cass McCombs to go to a roller disco party in Bushwick.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone else remember Shitbreak being described as the UPN version of Max Fisher? Classic.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

No, was that in Vice?!?!

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i didnt know people still went to that rock n' rollerskate thing.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

if you're a fan of cass mccombs you are definitely not a hipster.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i forgot. do people want to be hipsters or not want to be hipsters or want to pretend to not want to be hipsters when in fact they do want to be hipsters?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

T/S: Hipsters v. Hippies

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

According to any marketing person, I would assume that almost all ilxors are, whether they like it or not, "hipsters".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

*except if they like cass mccombs.

any marketing person (gygax!), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

who is cass mccombs?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

According to any marketing person, I would assume that almost all ilxors are, whether they like it or not, "hipsters".

youre joking, right?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

not at all.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

this board has seen literally thousands of posts debating the merits of VICE magazine. Most people would put us in the "knows what VICE magazine is" column...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

well there's a difference between reading about someone else's lifestyle and actually living it yourself though.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

also, this is a sort of an embarassing topic to be debating.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(i was joking about seeming interested about vice, fwiw)

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, I didn't even see that. I'm just saying that, while we may see ourselves as hipsters, non-hipsters, anti-hipsters etc, to the untrained eye (and let's face it, most are), we might as well be hipsters.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

We're def. assholes.

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I would think that to the untrained eye (and let's face it, most of us are), we're a bunch of geeks!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

okay wait, i meant to say that most of us are geeks. not untrained eyes. oops

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I got it Phil, and maybe you're right. But isn't geek the nu-hip (like 10 years ago?).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

how did finch like the neck-breathing? he cuuuuuuuuute

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

He was too high to notice, imo.

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't there like a ton of newish LA ilxors?
I've been posting about a year, I guess, but I've only been in LA now for about 2 weeks. So, I guess I count in that catagorization. Def int in FAP info.

Skottie, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Good, good. Post to threads as they occur/are revived.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

If you'd seen The Locust in Downtown LA, THAT would be hipster.

I'm willing to bet that a certain ILXor...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be at Spaceland tonight if anyone wants to stop by. It's free on Mondays and some of my friends 'The Vacation', are doing the residency this month. They're kinda rockin. There will definitely be hipsters there. In fact, there might only be hipsters there (and me).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

But anyways, Skottie ... have you ever been to the Henry Fonda before? It's always like that. Definitely avoidable.
-- dean!

No, never been there before. I thought it was a great venue to see a band, though. Very intimate. The crowd was a funny mix. I don't know if pot-smoking mom was talking to me because she was crazy LA talk to everyone lady, or if she glommed onto me because I was probably older than she was.

No retraction on the band, though. They were lots of fun.

And, actually, I know that going to the show doesn't qualify me as a hipster. There are so many reasons I am not a hipster. None of them, however, negate my desperate, pathetic craving to be one!

Skottie, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The Henry Fonda is intimate compared to the Staples Center.

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Office Depot Center can kick the Staples Center's ass any day! Oh, wait, where are my meds...

Skottie, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

if you're a fan of cass mccombs you are definitely not a hipster

gygax! could you explain this, please?

Mitchell (Mitchell), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

Ahhh, more innocent times...

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 09:48 (eighteen years ago)

I saw The Shins at Oxford Brookes University the night after I saw The Decemberists at Oxford Zodiac. The just makes me a prick.
