...and when is perfectly ok?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It is NOT perfectly ok ever!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

to kick-off

I'm going to far more gigs now than I did when I was eighteen, but if I'm still going to lots when I'm seventy it might well be considered embarrassing. It might be considered far less embarrassing if I was John Peel, coz at least then I'd have (or had) a professional reason for doing so.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Going to gigs is not an age thing though, unless of course you are going to see Busted repeatedly Mark.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

and what about clothes? It seems to me if I wore jeans and a T-shirt in North America at the age of 80 it would be considered perfectly normal whereas in the UK ppl would be more inclined to say "What is that old man doing wearing a young man's clothes?" OK, I realise that this is *far less true now* than it was in 1970 or even 1980, and it is worse for women than men, but....

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

but your initial reaction was that it's never acceptable EVER, so what things were you thinking of? Or was that a joke?

I know ppl far older than me who like Busted, Girls Aloud, Britney ect ect. There's far less of a stigma attached to liking pop in later adulthood than there used to be.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

But surely a t-shirt and jeans is acceptable at any age, or do you mean a specific type of jeans or t-shirt.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

A 55 yr old woman came in to ask for an ankle bracelet in our shop. Her friend (who was older) had one so she wanted one as well. I had to try one on... Her legs were extremely wrinkly (not bad) and hairy (v bad).

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

But going to a gig is nothing about an age thing.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

again - what things were you thinking of? I could see if it was something like skateboarding. But then again, if I owned a skateboard and was healthy enough to go skateboarding, particularly up and down those ramps, when i was drawing my pension I think I would want to actually do so to celebrate the fact.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe something like this, the combination of the tight bandana thingy & a baseball cap.
http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:TSQTYWfcGs4J:lisag.com/photos/mar03/50%2520Cent.jpg
Or an older woman wearing really trendy 'too young' for her clothes.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just relieved that I haven't been cited as an example of this yet.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

But would you say that you ostentatiously act like a young person, Martin? I wouldn't.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 9 February 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

... I'd be grateful if people would let me know the answer to this question.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Lady, if you have to ask, etc. etc.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

When they try and convince everyone they ARE young, I think

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

when they babble on about how incredibly drunk they got last night

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

that's no less annoying than when 'us youngsters' do it tho

stevem (blueski), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

My old drunk customers are annoying.
So are the young ones.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it when straight people in their forties discover rave as though it's something brand new... soon the red-face man has bleached his spikey hair and is wearing an iridescent silver shirt, while his wife is wearing those over the knee stockings of 1994.

Some people DO get a second chance...

andy, Monday, 9 February 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite is attempts at vaguely newish slang, ie my roommate's parents' approximation of the phrase "my bad".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that rules. My buddy's mom is a great wealth of aging pop culture sayings: "Are we having fun yet?!" is one of her favorites, and she LOVES the old favorite -"NOT!" tacked onto to the end of a sentence. "Shit happens," etc.

andy, Monday, 9 February 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The rule of thumb is that going to gigs when you're young is cool, going to gig when you're middle-aged is "eh", and going to gigs when you're elderly is the coolest.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what about going to gigs whilst elderly and moshing?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

ice cold

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Drinking Thunderbird?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I had some older relatives come to a show in Mpls to say "hi".. though it was sold out and they weren't on the list, the door guy let them in based on looks alone... my uncle was wearing a necktie.

Maybe that's the secret? Wait 'til you're sixty-five and then start reaping the benefits of looking anonymous and lost... wandering around backstage at Lil' Kim concerts, mumbling about your neice...

andy, Monday, 9 February 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

If the older person is "acting younger" in the vain hope of being taken for a younger person or wants to be accepted as a peer in a younger group, then it's pathetic.

If the older person is "acting younger" because it's a true reflection of their personality (whether that means 'youthfully zestful' or just 'incurably immature') then you should be no more embarassed for them than if a young person were acting the same way. NB: incurable immaturity in a young person can be embarassing, too.

Aimless, Monday, 9 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

which is why Andre Williams is still kick-arse, and why Ryan Adams is completely embarrassing

x-post

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't deliberately try to act young - I mean, I'm 44 and balding, I ain't fooling anyone - but I hang out with mostly much younger people (FAPs and stuff) and buy pop music and the like. I think it's just immaturity. It's certainly not a deliberate attempt to seem young or anything like that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

heh. All pepsi ads to thread.

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Martin. I certainly didn't mean to indicate you. If you just act yourself and are accepted as such by a younger group, then you are one of their peers, balding or not. I meant to indicate an older person who consciously adopts younger mannerisms out of a desire to be accepted. As for immaturity, if you aren't just joking, then it seems you wear it well.

Aimless, Monday, 9 February 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Buncha young whippersnappers...GET OFF MY LAWN!!!
I'm 42 and I'll be goddamned if I'm done. People tell me and my girl(38) that they can't believe that we're not in our 20's. Fuck that shit. I mean, it is flattering and all, but everyone seems to think that at my age I should look old and shit. If Lou Reed can wear it so the fuck can I.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna say something similar to that. I know a good few people older than me who I don't think of as being older than me, but similarly, I don't think of them as trying to act young either. I'm 31 and have friends ranging in age from 20 to early 40s, and I don't really think anyone's trying to be something they're not. It's when people try to grab on to a (presumably) media-led idea of youth (which bears little resemblance to any real people I would choose to associate with) that it becomes cringeworthy.

I don't actually know any people like that though. Except fictional ones.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

(x post - I wasn't going to say something like that, more something like that which preceded it)

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't replying to you, Aimless - I mentioned myself here, and I was mostly responding to Liz's question to me. I think I'm just about mature in some ways, but I have given up on ever feeling like I imagined adults felt, and I still have interests that many consider deeply immature - on the '14 year old you' thread I observed that very little has changed in my life in many ways since 30 years back.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Speedy, I am 49 and no one ever mistakes me for anything but a sententious old fart. They just haven't figured out how to cut me dead enough around this bitch to get me to leave.

Aimless, Monday, 9 February 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently John Peel falls into this category. There's a girl of 20 I work with who I was chatting about music to today - I mentioned John Peel. "He's that old guy who still thinks he's cool" was the response. I was shocked.

Al_Ewing, Monday, 9 February 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Old people acting like young people is embarassing. Young people acting like old people is also embarassing. People, let's act our age!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Son, I'm 30. I'm not exactly sure what acting my age involves.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I will never act the way someone else thinks I should. Fuck you young'ens that think that being alive less time than me gives you a right to tell me what to wear or what to do. I don't place any parameters on you, your behaviour, your taste in music or what you wear, no matter what your age. That more I think about this the more pissed I get. I can still run faster, bike farther, ski harder, rock louder and fuck longer than most 20 year olds. So what if my hair is a little thinner, yours will be too. Fuck ANYBODY that tells me what to do, young or old.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Mr Dastoor. What am I supposed to do, now I'm 32? (hey that sounds like a song). EVERYONE assumes I am about 24, and having a 21 year old partner certainly helps ;) I still dye my hair primary colours (I love it when teeny toddler girls stare and say "mummy look at the ladys pretty hair, its RED!"). I still love indie music, still dance like a retard in my loungeroom, still wear loud stripey pants and big boots and band tshirts. I figure if I FEEL like thats still right for me, and it looks fine, then who's to judge?

I plan on being a crazy old cat lady anyway, so yeah.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

trayce rules, but that's because she's cute.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I still love indie music, still dance like a retard in my loungeroom, still wear loud stripey pants and big boots and band tshirts. I figure if I FEEL like thats still right for me, and it looks fine, then who's to judge?

Yikes - I am. Stop right now.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

lesson: when you hit 30, you should start to look like Neil Young instead?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What sad Trayce, is the fact that some cultural system has told you that you should care. And I am over that shit. They fucked up when they made me a rebel in the first place, so what, they want me to shut up now?

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Tad, you should look like Kevin Shields. I have upheld this end of the bargain easily.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

my dad's 61 ... and he still looks like neil young (so there ned :-p)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm your father, Eisbär.

Darth N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

so what the hell were you thinking when you did trans, dads?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh poos to you, Nick. Be an old fart if you insist, I'll stay over here and have fun, nyah ;P

(and thankyou Tad!)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that the one I did as an empathetic gesture when I thought you had some kind of wasting disease, Eisbär - I forget?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Neil Young looked old in his 20s though so I'm not sure what that proves ;)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah and helluva lotta good it did cause i'm STILL all fucked up.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i've gotta find that pic of nick from this summer, where he looked VERY "heart of gold"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Would it make things better if I made a concept album?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

You kids work this out, it's way past time for my water-aerobics class then I am going mall-walking and to bingo. After I brush my dentures. And change my diaper.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

judge for yourself!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Pedantic Bastard II, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss read that as "everyone loves twees hahahaha!

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh right. Whichever one was at that palace.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I have now acquired a dog.

Things move fast in your part of the world,N.

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

that's more nick drakey.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The album concept has now been revised to emcompass man and his relationship with dog, from childhood onwards.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Hohoho heeheehee hahaha!!!

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The album ends on a haunting and poignant note, with man discovering the internal combustion engine and forgetting all about dog and trees.

It's a haunting triptych. Anyway, get a haircut, hippie.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the sun shines out of your behind.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

That dog looks so other-worldly or something. I don't really want to be bothered with a dog, but they are pretty fascinating in their way.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I was actually thinking that N. looks like Bob Kildea in the picture where he's sitting on the branch.
