If we accept the pretext that marriage for love is a fairly new Western concept (and possibly a faulty one at that) - and that classically, marriage is more of a contract or a partnership:

Is there anything wrong with mail order brides? A retired guy wants a wife and can't seem to find one here, and a Ukranian or Filipina woman wants to leave her depressed and dismal hometown - why shouldn't they give it a shot?

And are they ever successful?

If anything, I imagine the men make bad choices that lead to failure. We got a catalog at my old work of Russian women... and for every pretty 22 year old, there was an attractive yet frumpy 43 year old with a PhD and a nine year old son.

But I think the average 59 year old vet from Des Moines figures: "Well, I'm shelling out five grand to bring her over, why not get a swimsuit model?" Thus sowing the seeds for failure...
