Recommend me an interesting hotel in SF

I need a recommendation for a hotel, from $50-$150 in or within easy public transport of Embarcadero Center. The hitch is this: for part of our stay we will be at Hotel Triton, but some nights they are not available, so we have to switch hotels. THEREFORE we are looking for another interesting hotel for the other days. It can be European style, small, a B&B, something that is interesting in some way and not the usual boring standard room. In needs to be IN the city, though. Any thoughts appreciated. Apologies if there is a thread on this but I couldn't find it.

The Phoenix is where all the parties are at... it's the "Rock'n'Roll" hotel, if you will. The Triton is nice, they have fashion shows there. Hotel Britton is fairly cheap but dull, but a good location.

The one with the pool parties.

The Cathedral Hill is nice. I enjoy the Omni myself, but it's out of the price range you listed.

I always stay in the Grant Plaza in Chinatown (until I got an apartment) - there's nothing special about it, thin walls, tiny rooms, but it's cheap as hell.

Thanks for the thoughts. I'll pass on the Grant and Catherdral Hill--far too "normal". The Phoenix looks interesting, though, I will definitely check that out. The trip isn't until early March so I've got some time to research it. Thanks all, any more suggestions appreciated.

The Commodore is definitely in your price range... Please hold for a link.

I stayed in the hotel that is right above the Old Navy but I can't remember the name of it. It was nice if that helps.

The Phoenix is cool. I stayed there once. Good rooms - big beds with bamboo frames. The pool area is nifty. The bar beside it is decent as well..

Emily and I stayed in a great place in North Beach called San Remo for pretty cheap. It's an Italian-style villa (built around a center atrium) with beautiful antique furniture, lots of plants, small but romantic rooms, and gorgeous showers. Well under $100 a night.

speaking of sf hotels, has anyone been to Lord of the Balls Lounge in the Miyako Hotel in Japantown? Is it stupid or swanky or both?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

it closed about 6-9 months ago... one of the weirdest places (clientele, dj format, decor straight out of twin peaks doppelganger world) in town and completely un-selfconscious.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ahhhh fuck

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

it was merely: Lord Of Balls. That overpriced restaurant downstairs closed too i think. The Miyako is a nice hotel tho.

We liked this place a lot: http://www.queenanne.com/

Not expensive, lovely rooms, and it used to be a girls' school, and before that a "gentlemen's club" - how can you beat that?

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for all the suggestions. We ended up booking the Phoenix for the odd night, and the rest at the Triton. I'm going to keep these on hand for next time, though!

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)
