suburbia = the great late 90s movie, not that shitty punk one. the burbs is hilarious all the way through, one of the funniest movies i've ever seen, but it does have the devil tom hanks himself in the starring role. suburbia is funny too but was also was an Important and Striking reflection of my entire high school experience and everyone used to always say i looked like whats-his-name ribisi even though i don't think i did and nobody ever said i looked like the guy from green day, so obviously it was because i am a character from suburbia. but the burbs has corey feldman!

'The 'burbs'. I prefer Hanks' Earlier, Funnier movies. 'The Money Pit' is good as well, though nothing can beat 'Splash!'

DavidM, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

splash is god-awful and the money pit is almost as bad.

ethan, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Splash is crap but the Money Pit is awesome. I think this should be "American Pie" vs. "The Burbs".

Kris, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whoops, I meant "American Beauty" vs. "The Burbs".

Kris, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what the hell? actually, that gives me an idea for a thread.

the "shitty" punk suburbia was one of the first movies i ever rented (like, without my parents). i was 12 or 13 and i had just found out penelope spheeris existed. :-)

metal detective (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 17 June 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

i read her name as envelope spheeris

i am so drunk, Friday, 17 June 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

chaki, Saturday, 21 July 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

giovani ribisi is in that movie? i don't think i've seen either film (90s nor 80s ones). might have the latter on tape though.

nathalie, Saturday, 21 July 2007 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

i remember seeing the burbs in the theatre with my best friend when i was like 13! we loved it. a lot.

rrrobyn, Saturday, 21 July 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

everyone used to always say i looked like whats-his-name ribisi even though i don't think i did

i dont remember this at all!?! both these movies are pretty bad

and what, Saturday, 21 July 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

i remember really intensely disliking the '90s one (this was when i was like 14) (haven't seen the punk one)

impudent harlot, Saturday, 21 July 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

anyone who disses the punk one over the crappy 90s one has a fucking screw loose. the punk one is one of the best portraits of disaffected California youth ever made, whereas the 90s one is just so...blah.

Ebert has the Walsh-Stanton Rule, stating that no movie with Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmett Walsh can be all bad. I think this also applies to Henry Gibson.

kenan, Saturday, 21 July 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

Man, the Burbs is so extra hilarious. I always try to do the one move where Tom Hanks stumbles really quick down the stairs, and I always fail. This has been probably 12 years of attempts. When I was married to him, he would always yell at me about it. The real straw was when he made "That Thing You Do." I married too young; it was a mistake.

I kinda have a secret crush on Henry Gibson.

Abbott, Saturday, 21 July 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

you married Tom Hanks?

Heave Ho, Saturday, 21 July 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

aren't they making a sequel to "the burbs" soon?

hstencil, Saturday, 21 July 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

eight years pass...

The burbs, otoh, pretty shit

That special flat kind of lazy unfunny that SNL mediocrities toss off in a month at tax return time

Enlivened only by hanks' reliable mugging and one genuinely great stunt fall from a roof.

Dan akroyd's voice twin is one of the more irritating phenomenon ever to appear onscreen

Daithi Bowsie (darraghmac), Saturday, 23 April 2016 00:11 (nine years ago)

The hanks steps move was p great tho and yes corey

Daithi Bowsie (darraghmac), Saturday, 23 April 2016 00:14 (nine years ago)

"Dan Aykroyd's voice twin"
