Glenn Hoddle goes back to Southampton, footballing world laughs

If this is true, it's a very bad idea indeed.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What, the pub? But pubs are great!

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I fear I have shot this thread in the foot with my fuletude before its even begun.

This is what I was talking about.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hoddle did an okay job for the Saints until ditching them in a flash for the Spurs job. i'm not sure how those two factors weigh up against each other in the minds of the Saints fans now, and with Hoddle seeming to lose popularity with every new job i guess this is not a good idea - are there no spare Scottish firebrands now?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely there's no way Rupert Lowe would have him back?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, Hoddle did do a lot of good there. I can't really see him having the players on his side though.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I can just imagine him going up to Beattie and Phillips and going "nah, I don't rate you", and then signing Gary Doherty and Michael Ricketts.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What sins have Southampton fans committed in previous lives to deserve this?

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I personally recognise Dave Jones as the architect of our conversion from perennial relegation strugglers to an established Premiership side, thank you Mr BBC.

Hoddle did a decent job, I suppose, but I still think he's a twat. Somehow, however, I can see this happening. Which pisses me off just a bit.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

What are the chances of Dave Jones jacking it all in at Molineux after Wolves go down and returning to Southampton?

Or, for that matter, someone like Micky Adams?

I assume they couldn't afford Houllier or Ranieri assuming one or the other gets the chop in the summer.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Has Paul Hart's stock dropped that badly in the past year that Southampton wouldnt' consider him?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think Jones would go back, he was treated harshly by the board although the circumstances were very uncomfortable for all concerned i imagine

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

They could offer him a bag of sweets.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. He has the best player in the first divison (Andy Reid) in his team and one other (Dawson) who are constantly linked with big cash moves to the Premiership. Two players don't make a team, but they shouldn't be bottom three. I think the fans are upset because he couldn't hang on to Harewood and the bloke he bought from Gillingham isn't exactly prolific.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone at southampton still hates hoddle. bringing him back would be ridiculous.

and the almost annual manager-change is getting silly now. i love rupert lowe for getting the stadium built but perhaps it's time to ask questions about his apparent inability to build a good relationship with any manager he's worked with??

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

HODDLE MUST GO!!!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(I mean that in the "not come" sense)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll be bad all round. The fans won't like it, a lot of the players won't, there can hardly be a great relationship with the chairman - and I'm not at all convinced he'll do a good job either.

I feel a bit sorry for Hart. They have had bad injury problems at Forest.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

There's things i like about Hoddle. Obv. as a Spurs supporter he'ill always a great and fondly remembered player, though i've seen little footage. His religious views i can understand to some extent - dodgy spiritualism aside, his beliefs in reincarnation/karma are universal enough that no-one should have problems with them, i certainly dont (that disability comment was absolutely reasonable and fair in that context, if callously put). As a manager he's tried to introduce european formations, tactical play, and intensive coaching methods. All fair enough.
But the fact remains that his last three managerial tenures have ended in disaster. He seems to bring bad luck/vibes with him.
He doesn't know how to take advice. I really will feel sorry for Saints fans if he's inflicted on them.

pete s, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Strachan's gone!

I'm surprised by how upset and saddened I am by this. I really rate strachan as a manager, as a man, and as guaranteed entertainment whenever interviewed on tv. I shall miss him :0(

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

haha the BBC text last night had the surely not accidental and ominous headline of:

SOUTHAMPTON ADMIT HODDLE TALKS

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

SOUTHAMPTON ADMIT HODDLE TALKS : (

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Rupert Lowe is acting with such steadfast refusal to con sider fans' dislike of Hod that his ignoring of public opinion is more a badge of pride for showing that he's a really special true believer type of person rather than out of touch. He's acting like the kind of man who is a member of the UK Independence Party.

Oh...

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going down the bookies to put money on James Beattie going to Newcastle RIGHT NOW!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone else think there may be something seriously wrong with Strachan? Serious illness etc.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, you and your colleagues have been around a bit lately haven't you, it was quite disconcerting to hear your voice while I was in the shower on Sunday..... coming from radio 5 of course

chris (chris), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

well there is something wrong with him, which was why he was leaving at the end of the season, originally. you think it's not just his hip?

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Going by his post-match comical rantings, you can't take anything he says at face value. I hope he's OK because when I understand what he's saying, it's often chuckly.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that he was pushed early. He came out with some contentious comments this past week (well, even more than normal) and I think he's been given the shove.

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Its worse than that, its Glenn, Jim

Pete (Pete), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it was quite disconcerting to hear your voice while I was in the shower on Sunday..... coming from radio 5 of course

You came?

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

pushed?

"Gordon and I met and have both concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for him to step down as manager with effect from Friday," said Lowe.

run it off (run it off), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Hoddle is the man

BBC: Hoddle arrived at White Hart Lane to a fanfare, and left to raspberries

run it off (run it off), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose I'm being cynical, but the phrase
'...have both concluded that it is in the best interests of the club' smacks of a push to me, as in
'I want rid of him, and we're at logger heads and it's not going to improve, so it's better for the club if he goes'

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I am aglow. In a really bad way.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It's divine redemption for all this thread, isn't it?

The UK Top 40, 28/9/03

And all the others.

Such a shame hoddle_ohdear200 doesn't appear to exist any more.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha YES IT DOES!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want to kick Rupert Lowe in the eye. The fact he's made a point that he is not going to listen to fans... tit. Tit.

It's not like Dave Merrington's busy nowadays or anything.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll all come out in Strachan's autobiography...

run it off (run it off), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Glenda Hoddle, dress him a big pink frock and parade him around St Faries Stadium.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Enjoy Gresty Road, darling.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

There are three Saints fans at work, all disgusted by this turn of events - one has pledged to burn his replica shirt (or was it post it to Lowe smeared in fecal matter? I can't remember now; I'm staying out of his way, anyway) and switch allegiance to Dulwich Hamlet.

I'm trying to think how I would feel if Nick Barmby came back to Goodison. Probably not that miffed, as long as he was fit and didn't expect to be paid.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Thing is, if this happens, I can already see his first action...

"Give a big St Mary's welcome to MAURICIO TARICCO!!!"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Number Four - DEAN RICHARDS!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Number 35 - GARY DOHERTY!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Then he re-signs Colleter and El Khalej and lures Benali back into the first team, so our entire defensive play is re-centred on injuring people. Brilliant.

Dean Richards was good for us, mind.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Number 29 - BEN THATCHER!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Number 19 - FABRICE FERNANDES! (played out of position at wingback in wanky 5-3-2 formation that no one else ever uses and with good reason)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, it'll be five at the back, because we have to fit Claus Lundekvam in somehow. It just wouldn't be right otherwise.

He'll alienate all the players under the age of 24 by playing them in the reserves because they aren't 'ready'. Bolton get Prutton and Higginbotham in a swap deal for Kevin Davies.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Number 7 - DARREN ANDERTON! (Played as holding midfielder despite being physically unable to tackle)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

We are linked with a string of strikers we have no hope of getting, and end up with Kaba Diawara.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Antti Niemi is sold to Liverpool because he's 'too short'.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Number 8 - SALIF DIAO! (signed from Liverpool for £8m to widespread derision)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

This being the £8m we get from selling Beattie to Arsenal. Wenger will find a reason to buy him.

So upfront, it's Diawara and Pahars. Brett Ormerod is put out on the wing and progressively gets more and more ignored to the point where he vanishes into thin air during a FA Cup replay with Grimsby.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Number 9 - IGOR FLEMINOV (quite handy in Bosnia's Euro 2002 qualifying campaing, apparently)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Palace go up so I don't even get the compensation of beign able to see Saints play at Selhurst...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

On the bench, Kevin Phillips, Sun Ji-Hai and Ronaldo.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

And everyone is forced to wear light blue polo shirts. Including the players.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Baird is fired for kicking a bin.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

And in goal - Richard "Steady" Wright.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking more along the lines of Peter Encklemann, but Wright will do.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Telfer is put as the playmaker on the left.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Southampton fans must have done something wrong in a past life...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Attacking central midfielder - Peter Crouch.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

That was almost as funny as when G said it six posts in, Dom.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

And then, nine months later, Hoddle gets poached by Middlesbrough. He is replaced by Steve Coppell.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm re-running The Best of Dom.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

If the Tottenham Board are as forgiving as the Southampton one, then Hoddle could be given a second chance there too! Sweet.

run it off (run it off), Friday, 13 February 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The premiership - keeping drongos in beer since 1992.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'm so disappointed

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 4 March 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

OH!

DEAR!

200!

Probably the best case scenario for us - Sturrock has done fantastic things at Plymouth, though his record at St Johnstone seems a bit patchier, but most importantly:

Tee hee hee...
