Judging from BBC America british television seems to be nothing but The Learning Channel.

explain.

Are you sure? When I was back home it was all House Invaders, Ground Force, Bargain Cunt and Changing Rooms which is (except the latter, but might as well be) BBC1 daytime telly. Each show seems to have a very teeny weeny budget.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

BBC America isn't run by the BBC, it's run by the Learning Channel. That's about the extent of the explanation. It blows. It licenses shows from the BBC but also shows from Channel 4 and elsewhere. It never gets anything current (the Office excepted); it also just canceled Eastenders to the annoyance of thousands of people in the US. It's a non-stop do it yourself home makeover channel now.

Not nearly enough Monty Python. Where's Dinsdale when you want him...

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything you described suzy is the learning Channel.

Anthony's explantion explains everything.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

they also only show the news at something like 4:00 AM, which is a crime since the BBC news would be one of the only reasons I'd watch the channel now. The BBC should be ashamed and strip them of their affiliation, such as it is.

I thought the BBC America hookup was with the Discovery Channel.

They have news about three times a day but AK is right, it's on at odd times. If they were bloody smart they'd offer people a chance to subscribe to News24, which is awesome.

The pulling of EastEnders was lame, but my friend Chris reckons they're going to start a PPV channel and run it there.

Judging from American TV, it's nothing but an excuse to use advertisements as padding to stretch a 90 minute movie into a 3 hour time frame. The bursts of plot are actually shorter than the ad breaks.

Explain?

Just like BBC1 here!

"It's a non-stop do it yourself home makeover channel now"

and that's why i love it so...

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm amazed they pulled Eastenders (what was the reasoning?). I wish they would do it in this country as well ;)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry for interrupting, but i feel the urge to express my anger that bbc could not pay a measly 8 million pounds for the the rights to show 24 series 3! i cant beleive its on sky 1, its gonna b crap with adverts! does anyone agree?!

gaol clichy (clichy), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I've missed Bargain Cunt.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't the Beeb get to show 24 later in the year?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no, this series is purely to sky one! and as a big fan, this makes me angry!

gaol clichy (clichy), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

EastEnders: Chris K to thread!

They claimed the only people watching it were expats, which is a blatant lie. The strategy of BBC America is to get a market share of US broadcasting, not give nipple to expats.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Getting pissy at a channel that dares to have advertising is very 1972.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Particularly 24, which wouldn't be a full hour without ads.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(Thus negating the whole title...irony, cringe, etc.)

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

David Thomson made the very good point that if it wanted to be really interesting show, the scriptwriters would write all the ads too.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

that's be great - Jack could advertise Pro Plus, Kim could do cougar snares and David Palmer endorse Hamlet, the mild cigar

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

That was a really obvious and very stupid point from the consitently over-rated Thompson. (His piece on 24 was v.v.poor I think. And boo to Sight & Sound who should have waited a month for him to talk about it after the second series has finished, rather than talking about stuff we had not seen).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Jerry vs Pete FITE!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

24 series 3 is pants anyway, I loved the first one, thought the second was quite gripping, but just can't get into this one at all. They've run out of steam in a big way and I'm glad the Beeb has decided to put the money to better use elsewhere.

You can download it from here using Bittorrent if you don't believe me: http://www.suprnova.org/ and look under the TV heading from the top menu.

my only exposure to 'later with jools holland' and 'top of the pops' was on BBC america about a year ago. I dont think they air either show anymore.

'Jack could advertise Pro Plus'
