one last dean party...

ok, here's the deal. we've had a plan for a party on the 16th (monday) since before christmas. i think we're going to have a good turnout, but it would be great fun if you guys came out again.

it's at the harrow pub, same place as the thanksgiving party. if enough people say they'll come, we can get a bartender upstairs for our own personal abuse.

who's in? (i'm prepared to grovel. this will probably be the last dean event that i organise, and i'd like it to be really big and super fun...)

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I already agreed to this the other night. Can we wear suits? Or will we be mistaken for delegates?

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

you can wear whatever you want. suits, prom dresses, bondage gear. whatever makes you happy...

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw fuck! The first time this year I'm invited to a Big Fashion Party (for Fendi) and since it's work-conducive, must go.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

How about my little black coctail dress? ;-)

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

since i now have a LBD (which i'm wearing tonight), i approve.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

should be able to make this

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

(That is, if my dieting is successful enough to get *into* my LBD)

Heh heh, we can introduce Stevem's new haircut to my new haircut and see if they FITE!!!

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

and now i'm happy because i found a nice cardigan to wear over my lbd for tonight. now trying to decide between black ankle-strap heels or my silver flats.

wait! this isn't just a fashion thread. stevem and kate are going in for hair-to-hair combat, and that's pretty exciting.

I'll stop now.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

oh don't stop now. that one was kinda hot.

Kingfish Beatbox Botox Funktion (Kingfish), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

revive cause I need to know where this is now. I thought it was at a different place and that would have been awkward. Harrow? Need a FAP map reference...

Ah-ha, here it is. Whitefriars st:

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure about this - I'm out Friday and Saturday, and possibly Sunday too, so I might not have any energy left by Monday.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, reminding people that they should come out on monday. big fun.

(martin, you should stay in on sunday and rest so you can come!)

colette (a2lette), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not planning on this being a particularly relaxing or restrained weekend, to be honest, so I think a Monday night out as well is suicidal... have fun nonetheless.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I am almost certain to show now, Colette - against the possibility of a tiring weekend I have booked a day off on Monday, so shouldn't be worn out.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 14 February 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i managed to trick loads of you into agreeing (while you were drunk) to come to this, so make sure it's in your diary for monday from 7pm.

there's another map at http://tinyurl.com/t07d

and, as matt dc remembered, i'll confess that the title of the evening is 'hook up for dean', although we won't make you actually, you know, hook up with anyone. but you can if you want. we may or may not have what i'm calling 'fake dating'. if we do it it'll be platonic speed dating, basically. people get matched up and have a few 3 or 4 minute conversations with the other person, as a way to get people talking to new people. this idea was conceived over a bottle of wine with the idea that it's a valentine's party.

so is that intolerably lame, or fun in a silly way?

colette (a2lette), Saturday, 14 February 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

every time i see this thread title, it makes me think "ooo, dean gulberry isn't having any more dinner parties? oh he should come to a dinner party!"

(my brain recoils in horror at the thought that a boy, somewhere in the universe, is not being properly fed and is being forced to have one last dinner party. i am a freak, yeah ok)

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 14 February 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dean Gulberry's Last Supper

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Saturday, 14 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

this cries for photoshop...

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 14 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i appreciate it to no end that you are 1) concerned about my food intake and 2) refer to me as being "somewhere in the universe" even though you know i live in LA. kisses to all of you and the parties you are having in my honor Y&EWYAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAARHTGGHHHHCOLORADOARZIONAMICHIGANCALIFORNIA

dean! (deangulberry), Saturday, 14 February 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

tell me, what would the ideal menu at Dean's Last Supper be?

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 14 February 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

something tasty.

dean! (deangulberry), Saturday, 14 February 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

onion rings and root beer.

ill be judas to dean's jesus - clutching my silver coins and acting all indignant

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Saturday, 14 February 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

bill knows what i like. onion rings and root beer. most def. if you can work a quesadilla or two in there, a million best wishes to you.

dean! (deangulberry), Saturday, 14 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

colette says to bring ipods if you want to help dj (?)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 15 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Woohoo! I shall be there.

Shall I bring my spare iPod connecting leads?

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

no need to, i'm bringing (little) speakers that i used before, and the lead fits into headphone socket.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 February 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

donchajusluvconnectability!

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 16 February 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

um...yes.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 February 2004 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

right. so now, instead of writing a fascinating report on how the community empowerment network is relating to the local strategic partnership, i'm making preparations for tonight including getting things ready for a game.

yes, a game. you know you'll like it.

so, seriously, who will come? loads of people have said they'll come, but haven't posted. the more people that post they're coming, the more people that are still deciding will come.

pretty please? (this is me groveling)

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

games? [shudders]

i have to go and look at flats in hackney after work, but might come back into town afterwards (or, to be fair, i may go home and finish the game of civilisation III i started yesterday, as i've just conquered germany and am about to invent the tank) as meg is going to the pub with her friends...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I shall kill all attempts for this to be good by saying I shall be there. What time does it start?

I wasn't there on Friday when it was officially the biggest best booziest FAP ever. You do the maths.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, inventing the tank triggered the best bit in Civ II. Internal combustion powered rampage of empire building ahoy!

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there.

Civ III isn't organised fun, Steve?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Games?! Argh. I was thinking of coming but I ph34r gam3s utterly, unless they are the super quiz machine or bar billiards. And I *do* need to finish my sodding baby jumper which I cannot bring to the boozer, obv.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll be there from 7. it's upstairs at the harrow. (map links above)

i can almost promise that the game will be fun, painless and last only about 15 minutes of the entire night, and you'll end up with 3 new friends! there is no kissing, touching, shouting or making an ass of yourself. really, truly. i cringe at games normally, but the people that i've asked if it was just a good idea in my head or actually fun sounding all responded with true enthusiasm. otherwise i wouldn't have bothered.

(and, because i've been asked, yes, several of my good looking, single girl friends are going. and, for the ladies, several members of the gendean group are cute boys. just in case you're wondering)

starry, you'll have fun. if you would come except for playing the game, you can be my special 'helper' and don't have to play!

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

We need clues as to the nature of the games.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure I want either myself or my better half to end up with three new "friends".

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

'three new friends'.

You're having a bridge night, aren't you?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

ok. clue 1. the only prop for the game has just been created by me, on my computer, at work.

how about this? if people go, and really really hate the sound of the game, they don't have to do it. although i think you'll find it painless enough.

is that a good enough compromise?

(xpost-- is that cards? the only card game i know is go-fish. so no)

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'm feeling shattered after a debaucherous weekend, but I think I fall into the category of "people tricked into agreeing to come while drunk", and I will honour my promise! And I work close to Blackfriars, which is convenient...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

there is no kissing, touching, shouting or making an ass of yourself

I thought these things were the main reasons people go to pubs!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

no can do I'm afraid, the in-laws are still down, plus I have to be up at 5 in the morning.

chris (chris), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, rob, you've made a verbal contract to come...

and people are allowed to shout or kiss or make asses of themselves (or faint or eat gross things, as the case may be), but the point is that i'm not going to make anyone do that as a part of the game.

i wasn't even going to mention the game, but thought it was only fair to let people know what they're in for.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

shall be there, iPod in hand this evening.

Ed (dali), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yay! thanks, ed.

i was looking at the playlist i normally use for parties, and suddenly thought that you guys might not enjoy the mix of 80s stars like huey lewis and current crappy pop like britney.

thus the invitations for other djs...

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

iPods? Dude, don't tempt me to bring Pursey along!

I will go to this. I already promised I will go to this. Don't let me wimp out again.

The River Kate (kate), Monday, 16 February 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

don't wimp out! you'll love it! woo!

(i'm tiring myself out with all this cheerleading. don't worry, it's unlikely that i'll be able to post anything this afternoon from the evil council offices, so we're in the home stretch of groveling)

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(Just feeling socially exhausted after the weekend and the encounter with Jason and the Spacechild and strange parties in Shoreditch and dinners with the mother in law and ooh, I've got no money and blah blah blah, no, I MUST come out, I must. Party for Dean. Yeeeaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!!)

The River Kate (kate), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I need to get off the internet and go and do some work and leave Suzy to GET ON WITH HER WORK, YOU!!! but I will come to this tonight. I will. Though I will not be wearing my suit, sorry, I need to keep it nice and smoke-free in case I have to go to an actual job interview later on.

The River Kate (kate), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i was looking at the playlist i normally use for parties, and suddenly thought that you guys might not enjoy the mix of 80s stars like huey lewis and current crappy pop like britney.

This is ILE you're talking to, remember?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Which is why Ed and his ipod should ON NO ACCOUNT be let near any kind of amplification device.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm just jealous, I haven't got my ipod to work yet)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Are any of these cute single girlfriends middle aged at all? Or young but with a taste for unattracive short balding middle aged men? (ha, as if my love life isn't complicated and confusing enough as it is!)

I am generally up for almost any game, even if it doesn't involve touching and kissing. I'll be there, sometime around 6.30 I think. I booked today off work so will not be in a suit. I hope you can cope with this.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 16 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i was looking at the playlist i normally use for parties, and suddenly thought that you guys might not enjoy the mix of 80s stars like huey lewis and current crappy pop like britney.

dude, i mayaswell leave mine at home, it sounds like we have the same (i probably have more crappy indie though ;))

(mark, what's wrong with your ipod?)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 16 February 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm coming but i'm not sure i'm in that sociable a mood so no hair-ruffling tonight please, you bastards

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 February 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

(and, because i've been asked, yes, several of my good looking, single girl friends are going

this wasn't me who asked btw...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 February 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's asked Colette? I think we should be told.

My iPod has copious amounts of Indie on it too. Also a fair bit of poptastic 80s hits.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 16 February 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't say who asked! i'm a good secret keeper.

martin, i think there were actually a few older ladies on the gen dean list, so maybe they'll show up!

stevem, aren't you and kate supposed to go hair to hair tonight? make sure you're on good form, because her new hair is pretty darn cool.

(the whole setting up thing is really only a subplot, to those that are becoming frightened)

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh... as if you need to be asked in order to start setting people up ;)

I might come along later now, depending on how I'm feeling when I get back home. Is it worth my while turning up at 8.30ish?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh! if you come at 8:30, you should make it in time for the game.

which you'll love. really.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 February 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve, I haven't got my firewire cable yet, 7 weeks after Xmas. I R lame.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Here, just in case anyone doesn't know

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ruin.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I am also ruined but like I said to people when I sent regrets for not Deaning, it's because I got invited to a Fashion Week party (this *never* happens so no brickbats). This was interesting because it was given in a shop on Sloane Street and then you had to exit the shop while still behind velvet ropes to go into the after-party next door. I thought I was going to be bored out of my champagne flute but after about a half-hour I ran into old friend who knew people running party (like from school in Scotland 20 years earlier) so it was fab, no more room-scouring. Friend is proper famous but seriously down-to-earth. Good to catch up with friend and meet her mates who run the classy PR company. Good also that they protected me from old codger I'd interviewed with but didn't get actual job because is skinflint.

When three or four of us went next door, paparazzi photographers trailed my friend and flashed like mad (I'd be very surprised if we made it into Heat which is good as my skin is a mess). Once in, we started drinking these lethal cocktails with vodka and essence of violet and other purple shite which seemed to evaporate while we watched. I had three drinks and I'm on a deadline and aaargh shite shite. And all I got besides hangover was silly Fendi key chain by way of goody bag.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds like fun suzy, sucky goody bag though!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Platonic speed dating was surprisingly enjoyable - two out of the three people I ended up talking to went to the same university as me and knew who I was, and we had loads of acquaintances in common. Cor.

I kissed Barry's head again last night, didn't I? If we ever FAP at a ruff estate pub this will be the death of me.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, pls kiss Barry's head on the Monday fap, as I feel I'm missing out!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, there was hairfighting and ruin. MY HAIR WON, NYEAH NYEAH NYEAH NYEAH NYEAH. But it's dangerous because Stevem is still devastatingly cute even without the hair, and we've already picked his next hairdo for him.

Ruin, etc. and Rob and I swore to start a super-CanCon supergroup if he still remembers when he's sober.

river k, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yay, thanks for coming everyone!

i had a fantastic time. although i was only planning on having one glass of wine, somehow that didn't quite work, and so i ended up really pretty pissed.

but i feel fine today, except for the fact that i woke up about 7 am FOR NO REASON and couldn't fall asleep till 8:30, and then slept for another hour. so i'm tired.

and the only complaint that i got about the game was that people didn't have long enough to talk to their new friends! awwww.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha - I got a Scot, and Welshman and a New Zealander and on EACH occasion I asked if they were either English or American. Gah.

It was fun. Colette, your organisational mania is almost scary sometimes :)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

two of my three were Colette and Colette's boyfriend - any chance of a refund? ho ho

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i wasn't planning on actually participating, since i'd already met and talked to everyone there. but i didn't want kate to be dateless, so i joined in.

i think it's funny that that couple arrived just as the game started, and then ran away. i have no idea who they are. (i'd apparently met them, though, they knew who i was)

isn't it weird that i can be that organised for something like that, and so crap at it for work?

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It easy if you enjoy what you do!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I had fun too! and my glasses of wine multiplied as well, to caucus-like proportions. I am now very hungover.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope you're reading your Marx.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Especially the chapter entitled "I was so fuckin' wasted duded, omg wtf???"

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I would have been perfectly happy being dateless! Don't blame me for that, Colette!

river k, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

blame you for me having a 'date' with stevem? not a chance!

i hadn't thought of it till just now, but i think sarah is a VERY BAD INFLUENCE on me. the last three times we've hung out have been the last three times i've gotten really really drunk. (although good fun on all occasions, and absolutely necessary at the caucus. ha. just started chuckling about the fake kucinich stalker guy.)

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Colette your boyfriend totally scares me. He was pinching my cheeks like I was a small child within about ten seconds of my meeting him.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i think you were saying really sweet, cute things. i can't remember what they were, but it seemed appropriate at the time.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I really liked Colette's boyfriend, who also appeared to be a real person, contrary to speculation. I can't say the game added much to my evening, but it did help to blur the separation between the two groups some, and it wasn't at all unpleasant.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll have to let him know that he got mixed reviews...you're a tough crowd!

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Is he gay?

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob and I swore to start a super-CanCon supergroup if he still remembers when he's sober

Oh, I remember the supergroup. It takes more than 3 pints to put me into memory-loss territory! Although I'm sure my lack of access to musical instruments for so long has hindered my ability to 'rock out'...

Any-hoo, it was a fun night. I like being the token Canadian. Provides a nice balance, I think.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

dave, did you hear what i got him for his birthday/valentines day? tickets to mamma mia and the orginial abba tour video. he was so so happy.

you decide.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh, I never pictured myself as a bad influence before. There I go, inspiring the conspicuous consumption of RED wine at various politically-associated gatherings. I blame Marx.

Back to reading about the concept of relative suprlus-value.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

woo! i love matchmaking. i see a match that might come out of last night, actually. i just gave my standard request that if they get married, i can be the flower girl...

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Am U part of this match?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)
