RFI:Improving concentration

I have noticed a radical drop in my concentration levels recently, and I guess this is down to maybe not getting enough sleep or spending too much time on the internet (!). But are there other reasons for this occurrence? Does anyone else have this problem, and has anybody taken measures to solve it? I'm of the opinion that the brain is a muscle like any other, so maybe there are some "concentration exercises" I could do or something.

What was that you said again?

That wasn't all a set-up for a piss poor joke, btw. I genuinely seek answers to this question.

i have been wondering about the EXACT same thing lately.

I spent about 20 mins trying to read ONE SENTENCE last night, then gave up and fell asleep.

Yoga is an extremely effective tool for concentration improvement. Even the simple breathing exercises alone make a huge difference.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I have also been drinking gallons of coffee, perhaps this could be it?

You're onto something.

Thing is, I started going hard on the coffee when I gave up smoking. If I give up/cut down on coffee, my addictive personality will demand a new vice in its place!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Try 'hugging random strangers' as a new addiction/vice.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

random strangers don't do anything for my veins!!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Is yoga addictive?

Maybe I have ADD!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 June 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Reading too much ILX is also terrible for my concentration. So I am SCREWED.

AdamL -- you have an awful similar name to @d@m!

Provigil - this stuff improves concentration, though it is supposedly for people with narcolepsy. My doc gave me a free sample when I said I was having trouble concentrating.

Does anyone else have trouble concentrating for an 8-9 hour work day or is it just me?

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 November 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, how anyone can sit at a desk and work straight on anything for more than 2-3 hours is beyond me. I didn't used to be like this.

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 November 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

2 to 3 hours, I can't concentrate for more than 15 minutes at a time. It was a massive problem when I was at uni - I'd work for 15 minutes, get distracted for 2 hours, work for 5 minutes, get distracted for 3 hours, panic - but in a job situation it's easier to work for 15 mins, get distracted for 15, back to work, and so on. I'm very aware that it may become a massive problem again, though.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I had trouble concentrating yesterday but I was also here from 9 AM to 1 AM, so that is partly to blame.

Partly.

Dan Quisenberry (deangulberry), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i have the problems the lex describes at 'uni'. i found something at a study skills website that reccomended you say "be here now" (i know) everytime you notice losing concentration and then continue on with your work again.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Be here now"? Seriously? I should say "keep eyes open" everything I find myself nodding off.

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 5 November 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

well i never tried it out because i couldnt make myself say it, but its easy enough to come up w/your own phrase
