How do you type an umlaut? Or the squiggly thing that goes under a French 'c' to make it soft? Or the thing above a Spanish 'n' to make it 'ny' (like 'manana')?

on mac os you type alt and u at the same time the the letter you want the umlaut over.

Umlaut, for PCs at least, is done by holding down the ALT key, typing a three digit number and releasing the ALT key. ALT+129 = ü. http://www.asciitable.com/ has a list of extended ASCII codes, incl. the Ç (128), ç (135), ñ (164), and Ñ (165).
