I'm amazed at an old me from about 3 months ago. I always come across really witty and knowledgable, which is not like me at all.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Wish I could say the same!

Nutty Nigel., Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

no you're thinking of johnny fitz

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have come across a few of mine lately and been surprised at the degree of consistency in my opinions over time. it doesn't feel like that in real life!

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i seem to be a lot more articulate and thought-out in my older posts

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe you just felt the need to try harder.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to have dropped the ball about eight months ago. I've never felt better!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, if i was to look at my posts today in a year's time, they'll seem more articulate

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 12 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hoi - fake Nigel, I kick yer cunt you wee dog turd. Cheeky bastard right.

I've looked over my first thread from about 4 days ago and don't think I've changed much. Maybe I should have been posting a year or two ago.

Nutty Nigel (Nutty Nigel), Thursday, 12 February 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I take that back. I was looking over all those threads I've started with my mate Badly Named Barry, and we were looking at eachother thinking 'I come across as a bit of a turd really don't I'?
Alright I'm Calum, you knew that. But I've always wanted to be one of the big boys. It does give me this sexual thrill you know! It's all i'm getting at the moment any way!

Nutty Nigel,, Thursday, 12 February 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG, how pathetic

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 12 February 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It should be fairly obvious that any Nutty Nigel posts with a comma or full stop after the name are other people. To be honest, people trying to 'get back' at him are starting to look even more pathetic than him. Just ignore him, for fuck's sake.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Je ne regrette rien.

I once cared about this bitch? wtf?

old-ILX (Mark C), Thursday, 12 February 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I just finished reading some posts of mine from both major boards on The Forum that date back to when I first started coming around these parts, i.e. approximately ten months ago. While I don't come across as particularly embarrassing, honestly I think I could've used some practice in fully reading threads before responding to them. I've gotten much better at reading threads, especially lengthy ones, though. Thankfully.

The TRULY horrifying revelations come when I check out e-mails I wrote five or six years ago. Oh dear sweet Jesus. I think I could've calmed down a bit, maybe come across as a bit more thoughtful and a little less enthusiastic. Eeeyikes.

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 12 February 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry, you're weird.

I hate looking at my old posts, since I can't write v. well.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 12 February 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(I love Barry's brand of weird.)

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 12 February 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

My posts originally tended to be longer, I think I was trying to establish the persona here. Yay now being elliptical!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I've now made so many posts to ILE that there are ones I don't remember writing. Reading them is an odd experience.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I have not changed at all, yay me, oh no wait...

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh classic! I don't do it often, but sometimes it's cool to see what banal or stupid thing I said when a thread gets revived.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 15 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Often during my overnights shifts (when seemingly the rest of ILX nation has gone to beddy-bye), I'll check out some of my earlier entries...and am usually blown away by what an imperious assbag I am.

I like it when I start reading a new thread, then get 30 or 40 posts in, then find a post from myself, then realise the thread is actually from 3 or 4 years ago and I've read it all before but have absolutely no memory of it.

JimD, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)

Sometimes I see the title of a thread and think "oh man, I've got some opinions about that, but I don't know if I have time to talk about them at length" and then I click on it and see that it's an old thread and I've already made my opinion known, and I am satisfied.

jaymc, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

Seriously though, most of the good work in "rock" qua rock is being done in indie, right? I think so. If you look at something like the recent Pazz & Jop critics polls, the majority of the rock music they rate highly comes from indie. Not to say that something that is critically-lauded is automatically good, but I do agree with the Pazz & Jop critics generally: for good rock music, indie is where it's at.

I used to think the music I listened to was the gayest thing about me, but then I realized that all my mastercuts dj friends are all straight, and so it seems are most of the ILM househeads. And I also realized it's wanting to fuck other men that is the gayest thing about me.

Generations don't exist. I hate Douglas Coupland. For a better representation of the truths of what a generation isn't, how about "Cheaper By the Dozen"? Or "Kiss Me in My Little Canoe"?

How about the local newspaper haaing a 14-year-old girl writing a column called "The Voice of X?" As in Generation X. This is clearly awful.

I am 18. I don't know how I feel. I've never really felt an age. I've always felt extremely deatatched from my body, I feel like I don't exist as a physical entity. I feel weird checking "female" on forms & such because I don't feel like I am a girl.

The AP stylebook says one should write Gypsy when referring to the race, and gypsy when referring to something that moves quickly. The example they give is "She hailed a gypsy cab."

Moral: you have to be creepy. You have to make your fuck-want clear from the beginning, even if you choose to go smooth and disguise it as "romantic interest". I understand that the romantic interest route is very popular.

Should I just post in threads on individual records I'm into? Would focusing on music instead of music publications and over-generalized topics such as The-State-of-X make people dislike me less?

Short of quitting the board, what can I do to stop everyone from continually calling me out for what I'm guessing are hopefully just rookie mistakes naive young posters make?

I try not to. I no longer even recognise the person I was 5, 10 years ago. Like, sometimes if I see myself posting on an old thread, I get angry with the post halfway through reading it and want to shout "shut up you fucking idiot you don't know what you're talking about" before realising it's me.

(Please don't make the predictable "but we still do that!" jokes please.)

The past is like this fotting stillborn siamese twin you can never quite seem to ditch. Or maybe I've listened to Pornography by The Cure too much lately.

I think the depressing thing is I like my old posts better. Looking back on these posts makes me feel a pang of nostalgia for borderline alcoholism and way too much free time.

It's a little hilarious though how tentative I was about starting my own threads. When I did start threads, some of them were very much crap:

Actually, the reason those *really* old posts seemed like someone else was because they *were* by someone else. Forgot there was another kate posting here when I first joined. I changed user names too many times in the old days. I think this is my actual first post:

I know it was something Scottish. We had a Scottish Music Only marathon round my flat. Something about New Years belonging to the Scots, I'm still not entirely sure why, may have had more to do with the Absinthe and the Laphroiagh than the date.

So chances are, it was PRML SCRM, Belle and Sebastian or... ::oh the shame:: Travis.
