It's All About Love

Much-maligned follow-up to 'Festen' by Dogme man Thomas Vinterberg. It's a Wenders-y end-of-the-world in New York thing with the lolvely Claire Danes and the lovely Joaquin Phoenix (anagram of 'young Ray Liotta'). Released in the UK same day as 'Dogville', Lars von Trier's post-Dogme movie, which is either good marketing or very bad. Anyhoo, it's as undogme as you can get, though thematically it isn't a million miles from 'Festen'.

I want to see it again before I make my mind up.

I can't wait to see it.

How's Sean Penn in it?

OMG I forgot. This film is packed with Comedy Eastern European Accents! And Penn's is best! I've really gotten to like Phoenix after 'Buffalo Soldiers'.

I think it's great marketing that they're being released on the same dates! Apparently, Trier and Vinterberg don't get on that well, so it's like the set up to a Blur/Oasis/East Coast/West Coast style FITE. But with Danes.

Ooh, I dunno -- Lars wrote Thomas' new project. I think that Lars is a genius self-publicist though and film-rockists everywhere like a maverick who like, makes his leading women suffer and cool shit like that, erm...

4 films that haven't reached Oxford yet: Elephant, The Dreamers, Dogville, and 'It's aAll About Love'. What. The. Fuck. I'm going to like 'IAAL' just because the Guardian called it 'pretentious'.

I am very keen on Its All About Love, mainly because the critical notices have goaded me into liking it by their hate because its all very silly. Silly is good.

Dogville is an incredibly boring over-didactic piece of crap.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Friday, 13 February 2004 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, although I haven't seen 'Dogville', I'm cast-iron solid for 'IIAL' now. Vinterberg > Trier hurrah!
