Is this the most overrated trait you can have? what value does it have?

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

none, isn't it also known as "being a doormat"?

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really, it means having, like ethics, and not being a selfish git.

NRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

not where I'm from, a good sport is someone who will let others rip the pi$$ out of them and never bite back, someone who will do any little odd job to get on your good side.

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Obv. it means both.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Where are you from, C-dogg?

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

He ain't the mayor of Palookaville, he'll tell you that much. Suckertown either!

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique, yours is the original meaning - Chris is making a point about they way bullies use the phrase.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

where I'm from was the wrong words, I meant in my mind.

and no, I ain't from no place like Dopeville

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Bullies and bad office jokers.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i shouldnt have put the phrase in inverted commas, i think that betrayed my own views on the subject, rather than leaving it open ended. is it humourlessness to not be a good sport?

if i had phrased the question, "being able to take the piss out of yourself' perhaps it would have had a more positive response? are the 2 things the same thing, or does the latter imply active, and the former passive, as in the latter situation, you are initiating it, and therefore in control.

i had the misfortune to see that never mind the buzzcocks programme once. it was a repeat, coolio was on it, he was 'a good sport'. i felt he shouldnt have been

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick's second one being the on the money one, especially office "jokers" the Finchy types

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Bullies and bad office jokers.

and sexual harrassers.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

And child molestors.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Take no notice of Chris today, he's taken on a barry mentality, and is itching for a fight ;0)

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

and my softball coach when I was 7.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I go with what N said -- obv it's double-edged. I think militantly going against the very idea of caving in, being a team-player, etc, is selfish; OTOH, sometimes you have to put your foot down. In general, though, it's good to be a good sport, to make a fool of yourself occasionally, to dance badly, sing karaoke, etc, if you know what I mean.

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

just know the difference between laughing with and laughing at.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

You doormat ;o)

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(Is Barry like Bob from 'Twin Peaks', flitting from host to host as whim takes him?)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

and you can shut your yap too Nipper

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

good sport != doormat! a good sport is someone who can take a joke at their expense that was not intended as malicious, a concept which ILX pretty much revolves around no?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

like being repeatedly called a doormat?

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't even the 'good' interpretation condescending, i.e. your first impression might be that this person is thoroughly repressed, but occasionally he/she will have fun with the awareness that this is seen as out of character?

"To make a fool of yourself occasionally, to dance badly" is how most people I know live, and I wouldn't call them good sports.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

so what do you call someone who's always prepared to do something fun even if it makes them look silly, and who never gets angry about jokes made about them/at their expense which aren't really malicious? doormat? i think not

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Normal.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha -- EK, not 'normal' where I live. A lot of people get all puffed up and shit at the prospect of dancing/karaoke, etc.

NRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha -- EK, not 'normal' where I live. A lot of people get all puffed up and shit at the prospect of dancing/karaoke, etc.

It's 'normal' where I live. In fact, it's the first thing people do in the morning (after a quick glance at the paper, of course).

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Arguments on an increasing number of threads seem to pivot on the norms of Enrique's social circle.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

But those outsiders who generally don't join in get called 'good sports' when they do join in.

XP

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"good sport" at best = knowing it's not all about you

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

itching for a fight ;0)

Cripes, it looks like he broke your nose.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

he ain't winking either

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Making a show of enjoying your own humiliation has value because it lulls yr "friends" into false self-confidence after which you can snap their fucking necks

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

LOL

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

or being 'game for a laugh', or just 'game'

my point? heck knows!
