Pinkcat (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, that's one geriatrician's delight of a cat right there, then.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

he may have been a lazy doddery old bastard, but Emily loved him

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i will be EXACTLY like Professor Yaffle when i grow up

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be exactly like Bagpuss. In about ten minutes.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You forgot the breadcrumbs, Steve.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

My life would have been immeasurably better had that contraption actually existed. Happy birthday Bagpuss.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Who knew inanimate objects need love, too? Happy B-day, Meow....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

HBBP!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

although I am older than Bagpuss, he is older than me in toy years.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 12 February 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

what the hell is that?

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 12 February 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

What sam, Bagpuss? He's a saggy cloth cat, although Emily loved him.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i am STILL entertained by the idea of Bagpuss as Marxist propaganda

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The other day at I was very tempted to spend $9 on a copy of a crosstitch magazine EVEN THOUGH I DON'T DO CROSSTITCH because it had a Bagpuss pattern.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i like crosstitch.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Sam, don't be hmmmming Bagpuss. I urge you to investigate immediatly (the dvd is v. cheap) and become enamoured with the show. I presume you're not UKish?

Oh, and crosstich is cool.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnney, I'm Texas-ish.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Between the Bagpuss pattern and the Sanrio character one, maybe I have a new craft I need to learn.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, that would explain your lack of love for the thing.

For those of you who don't know . . .

Once upon a time
Not so long ago
There was a little girl and her name was Emily
And she had a shop

There it is
It was rather an unusual shop because it didn't sell anything
You see, everything in that shop window was a thing that somebody had once lost
And Emily had found
And brought home to Bagpuss
Emily's cat Bagpuss
The most Important
The most Beautiful
The most Magical
Saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world

Well now, one day Emily found a thing
And she brought it back to the shop
And put it down in front of Bagpuss
Who was in the shop window fast asleep as usual
But then Emily said some magic words

Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss
Old fat furry cat-puss
Wake up and look at this thing that I bring
Wake up, be bright
Be golden and light
Bagpuss, Oh hear what I sing

And Bagpuss was wide awake
And when Bagpuss wakes up all his friends wake up too
The mice on the mouse-organ woke up and stretched
Madeleine, the rag doll
Gabriel, the toad
And last of all, Professor Yaffle, who was a very distinguished old woodpecker
He climbed down off his bookend and went to see what it was that Emily had brought

Bagpuss gave a big yawn, and settled down to sleep
And of course when Bagpuss goes to sleep, all his friends go to sleep too
The mice were ornaments on the mouse-organ
Gabriel and Madeleine were just dolls
And Professor Yaffle was a carved wooden bookend in the shape of a woodpecker
Even Bagpuss himself once he was asleep was just an old, saggy cloth cat
Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams
But Emily loved him

Sorry, I've gone all misty-eyed.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, this looks vaguely familiar. was this ever run on "Pinwheel" or any other US kids show in the early '80s?

Kingfish Beatbox Botox Funktion (Kingfish), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Good grief it's twee, isn't it?

My bagpuss has a hole in his mouth which is the perfect size for sticking your finger in. It's kind of comforting.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Pray that Dan Perry doesn't find this message, Madge.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

That image does set the scene for that bad bad mang to do his funniest.

Personally, in that picture up top I think he looks like he's about to cough up a hairball. Still, happy 30th birthday, you saggy old tabby.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you saying that Dan Perry has something the same size as Madchen's finger?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Would you believe me if I said I really did blithely type that out with no thought whatsoever for Perry?

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe you. But that will not save you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)
