Work Perks

I say 'perks'. But here's an etiquette thing. My contract's up in two weeks. I found out the other day that I'm entitled to a free eyecheck -- which is a good idea, since I wear glasses all day, stare at a monitor/printed matter, and haven't had them checked in 3 years. So does it look bad to ask now? It probably does, but like --- ummm wtf?

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Go for it - employers always seem to keep deliberately quiet about free eyechecks so it's all they deserve.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

go for it. what's the worst they'll do, fire you?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Do it! Get them to shampoo your asshairs if you're entitled as well.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

you still work for them, you are entitled! take some sick days too.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You are all correct! Sad thing is I freelance here too, and don't want to... oh damn it all! I should be less of a good sport sometimes.

NRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i think when we have our next benefits fair im going to pitch a fit if i can't find the asshair shampooing representative.

Chris V (Chris V), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever, freelancers cost them nothing. as long as the work you deliver to them is good, it'll take a lot to make them give up a reliable and cheap source like you.
take advantage of them. you've earned. it's not like you took a job there, and as soon as you were eligible for benefits took them all and then quit.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm resigning at the end of the month so I feel bad about taking this final pay cheque"

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It's that kind of place! 10 hours overtime on a 21 hour contract? Hey, be a sport!

enrq (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

If you'd had the eye test 6 months ago would you feel guilty? All you want is a single eye test. Go for it.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I should get both done. Or do they only offer reductions on monocles?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

make sure you steal lots of pens as well. at least 10 hours of overtime's worth...

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

You better not work for Eye Test Depot.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

cuz you they better be giving that shit away free!

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I misread the original question as "Free paycheck" and was all weh-hoo go for it, rock on! But, erm, free eyecheck, yeah, that's good, but not that great as many opticians actually offer a free eyecheck as part of their package when you buy a new pair of glasses.

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Bear in mind it's not normally a full eye test, just to make sure that you can see the computer screen.

hmmm, Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but I'm hopefully not buying... if I do then OH FUCK -- no lecky for me next month...

hmmmm -- I dunno, they have acredited opticians, etc, but you might be right.

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

true. do they contribute to new glasses if you need them? i think my office does that, up to a limit.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

my office's eyecare plan (for me, at least): "couldn't you just, y'know, squint?"

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 February 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

They're only obliged to contribute to new glasses if you need them only for VDU use. Very, very few people fall into this category.

Talking of work perks, I got roast lamb, yorkshire pud, veg and two scones free today, hurrah! I have to pay for it by typing up three hours' worth of minutes though.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

=! perk

You never get free glasses, or if you do you get the lamest NHS-type (and not in a good Jarvis way) frames with perspex lenses.

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

How come you're suddenly the expert, when you only found out the other day that yougot anything at all?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I turned to the page 'Free Stuff', and... actually I'm bluffing: for all I know they give you the very best Nathan Barley-est fashion glasses and fellate you as they do so -- but something tells me they don't.

NRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Nathan Barley just wears dumb emo glasses. What you want it to hold out for the architect glasses!

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

What are they?

NRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Architects always wear the most amazing glasses, haven't you noticed? They always look quite physically improbably but are highly engineeered for beauty and functionality.

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

As someone said, they often give you a vouchers towards whatever frame you want. Though conditions of the sort Madchen mentions may apply.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna retrain as an architect, though i want ocular proof of these fantasmo glasses first.

NRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get vouchers for glasses, just Ice cream and mexican foods, a little pastry and some cake mixes :o)

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

An example of Architect glasses:

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

How is that engineered for beauty and functionality?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but seriously, the gateway drug of architect specs is Alain Mikli frames:

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"work perks"?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!

I just get my windows shot out and spend 4 hours in an after hours immigrant clinic to get the district's workman's comp to pay for my fucked up knee. (tripped and fell in class on Monday. hurrrrtttts.)

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! Where do I get [the funds to buy] those?

xpost

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Become an architect and design your own!

The River Kate (kate), Thursday, 12 February 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Carlos the architect has designed his most recent pair of specs. The alternatives are going to Cutler and Gross or to the place in Long Acre where they do everything from Dame Edna specials to the Miklis to other strange Japanese designers.
