so this NYC bars being only open until 1am soon thing? BS, right?

Phil seemed to hint that, coming soon, NYC bars will only be able to be open until 1am. Please tell me this was just a great misunderstanding on my part.

I refuse to believe that NYC will have a shorter curfew than Seattle.. or even Orange County, CA for that matter.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Bars will be able to stay open until 4 if they get a nightlife license... but Carey said that the state law is that liquor licenses are valid until 4, and the NYC law can't trump that, or something.... I dunno. I'm scared.

This is from the New York Nightlife Assn website:

"New York City's bars, clubs and lounges now have another fight on our hands in the form of legislation that will be introduced in early 2004 to require establishments that stay open past 1 AM, serve food or drink and play music to obtain a new "nightlife license". This new license, adding another level of governemnt bureaucracy, would be a mandatory license for over 1,000 establishments in NYC, instead of the 300 or so clubs that are now required to have a cabaret licnese. In addition, under this new proposal, your bar or club could be padlocked for 10 days, essentially closing your business, for simply receiving three violations of many different types (including sanitation and noise) within the course of two years. Furthermore, your nightlife license can be revoked for receiving as few as two other types of violations (including indictments, not convictions, for assaults) within the course of two years, and once your license is revoked, you can NEVER get it back"

There's a petition circulating to keep San Francisco bars open til four, but I don't know if it'll pass.

London pubs are the worst: 11:30. Some archaic "Rolling Up Our Sleeves to Smash the Kaiser" kind of thing...

andy, Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a current measure in SF to extend alcohol service until 4am.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, dont people usually start getting ready to go out at 11:30?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

here in lexington, ky, they are considering finally letting the bars stay open until 2:30. the 1 curfew is pretty horrible, i hope you all don't have to endure it.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I truly believe Bloomberg is a cybovoid sent over by New Jersey in order to increase the economy of its state by making Hoboken and surroundings the most happening "sixth" burrough, what with its all night drinking and smoking liberties.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Pox on Bloomberg! A closed NYC bar is an oxymoron, can only lead to masses of dehydrated poseurs roaming the streets, searching for a beer oasis in the night.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Except for the poseur part, that's part of what makes REAL American nightlife fun, MAN!

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't forget the joy of the morning-after jackhammer hangover, yo.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

closing hour in hoboken is 2 AM. you are right about being to smoke wherever you want, though.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I will kill for bars to stay open until 4 in LA.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i might have to change my 4:15am - 12:15pm sleep schedule.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

what are the bar curfews like in the non-UK parts of europe?

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

tombot's email address otm

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

haha the two liquor stores near my house both close at 10.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody, did Canada annex your neighborhood?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I would kill to be able to smoke in bars in L.A.

thank god for the small handful of establishments that seem to not care about the laws

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

..or you just can't buy HARD liquor in your neighborhood after 10? (xpost to jody)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The City that Never Sleeps, eh?

For what it's worth, I have yet to hear this rumour credibly supported, but my bar-going days are numbered at the moment anyway.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't buy hard liquor after 10. the supermarkets/convenience stores that sell beer stay open till 11. but that's just the old fogey neighborhood where i live.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"I would kill to be able to smoke in bars in L.A. ..."

Even though I smoke, I've never been impassioned about this... if they want me to go outside, I go outside without thinking about it.

And especially in LA, where there's no ice blowing in under the door jamb. It's nice to step out for a minute, and it moderates my smoking - I smoke less in Calif bars.

I guess I just don't care anymore... Of course, in Oakland you can still smoke in ALOT of bars, albeit discreetly.

andy, Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

In Italy, there are no licensing laws, bars can remain open 24 hours. They do, as well, although it is worth noting that Italy doesn't have a drinking culture. You go into a bar at 4 in the morning and its just people sipping espresso and eating pastries.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What exactly about this proposed (by whom? Bloomberg or Gifford Miller?) legislation, if it were passed and not superceded by a state law, would mean that NYC bars would only be open until 1 am?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

keeping BART running until 2 would be preferable than keeping bars open until 4 as far as San Francisco goes, to me anyway. I'm surprised NYC wants to do anything that would certainly only hurt the economy of the city. What the hell?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the part about establishments that don't (i.e. can't afford) the "nightlife" license. (xpost to gab)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I just noticed...

"New York Nightlife Assn"

I could make many jokes right now. MR. PERRY TO THE WHITE COURTESY PHONE!

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"establishments that don't (i.e. can't afford) the "nightlife" license" /= "NYC bars"

it's a beer tax

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

gabb otm. I think what it actually means is "the city needs more money so let's take it from the bars," i.e. a sin-tax. The sad part is it'll be the smaller, less crowded bars that get pinched.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, maybe the New York Nightlife "Assn" just worded it weirdly, but they clearly state "bar or club" above. I don't live in NYC. Maybe you can elaborate further, gabbneb, cuz what you just said wasn't too clear to me.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

the city needs more money, so we'll just introduce legislature to fine these place that can't afford the fines and padlock them, and therefore not get rent...

?????

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as "The Emeral Pool" massage parlor stays open 24/7, I'm happy as a clam. A happy ending clam, that is.

andy, Friday, 13 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm willing to bet that a lot of establishments will cough up for the license, and that if they have to, they will raise prices to do so. We already pay astronomic prices for alcohol, we won't notice it much. Am I overestimating the health of the bar economy? Maybe.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree about smoking outside in L.A., it's not a huge deal, although sitting in a booth with a friend whilst smoking is a pleasure that is hard to come by here. There is one coffee shop I know of on Melrose that allows smoking inside, and apparently they manage to fit under the category of an establishment that can have smoking, through some portion of that law.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope andy. I heard ownership changed. It's now the "Emeril Pool". You get to bath in warm water sipping martinis and smoking cigars with Lagasse...

bam

thank you thank you, i'll be here the rest of the week.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

They still take Diner's Club?

andy, Friday, 13 February 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I overestimating the health of the bar economy? Maybe.

Judging from all the NYC ilxors that are apparently thinking about moving out of the city for financial reasons and tough job market... tha'z my impression.

(I shouldn't talk though. I've only been there once, in early 2002. And it seemed half the areas I walked around were padlocked anyway.)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i've read rumors that philadelphia is also considering adopting this smoking ban nonsense from nyc and boston.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway, wtf is bloomberg's problem? even giuliani didn't have a problem with 4 am closing hours?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Booze is pretty recession proof. The less I work, the more I drink.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"NYC ilxors" /= NYC economy

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno, people always need to drink. especially the unemployed & broke ones. i know more bars/clubs that have been shut down due to drugs than for not being profitable.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

at least as of a few months ago, there were still a lot of unemployed and not broke people in NYC, still living off of tech bubble money

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ove here in England the bars shut at 11pm!!!! :)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

In addition, under this new proposal, your bar or club could be padlocked for 10 days, essentially closing your business, for simply receiving three violations of many different types (including sanitation and noise) within the course of two years.

Whats wrong with that part?

I don't even want to try and imagine a 3am dirty hour. urgh.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 13 February 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

so some cranky neighbor makes a few noise complaints and your bar gets shut down?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 13 February 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

A neighbor making a noise complaint isn't an automatic violation is it?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 13 February 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that would depend upon whether or not an establishment were on good terms with the powers that be.

From the NYC consumer affairs website: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dca/pdf/pr11_19_03.pdf
and
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dca/pdf/nightlife.pdf

Oddly enough, a couple of weeks ago when the post ran that article, I looked at the website and found a longer, more in detail description of the proposal. It seems to have disappeared (or at least I can't find it).

mouse, Friday, 13 February 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that would depend upon whether or not an establishment were on good terms with the powers that be.

So NYC cops are all corrupt?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 13 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope. More's the pity.

mouse, Friday, 13 February 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Who fucking cares? It's already illegal to dance OR smoke in a goddamn bar in this shithole, why even bother going to a bar or club anymore? "I really enjoy paying too much for my alcohol and warding off uncomfortable sexual advantages" WTF?? Burn them all down and start from scratch. The gestapo keeps closing down all the clubs I ever enjoyed anyway.

Allyzay, Friday, 13 February 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)
