When the video store loses the movies you returned and charges you exorbitant late fees.

So, due to the recent loss of my cell phone, I haven't had a phone for over a week, and now I find out that I owe the video store like $30 for movies I returned two weeks ago.

Fuck you, block buster. Seriously, is there anything I can do except complain and hope they stop charging me?

Don't you care around a video camera and tape every single thing you do? My stepbrother's attorney suggested this to me.

Insist on a receipt or some kind of written record of your transaction. Blockbuster tried to do the same thing to me with a game I returned several weeks earlier...an international phenomenom (I bet that's spelt wrong!) it seems.

That'll keep people from using Netflix!

No kidding I think that company is screwed. They've been sued over their late fee policies a few times.

Just give 'em hell, boy. If you flip out on them, they usually retract from whateva. Be...ASS-ERTIVE. Works for me.

Tell them your returned it on time. If they keep harrassing your then tell them to fuck off. They probably checked it in without entering it into their computer and it's just sitting somewhere on their shelves. Blockbuster is pretty notorious for this shit. If they try to charge it on your credit card just institute a chargeback and your credit card company will tell them to fuck off. If you didn't even give them a credit card then don't worry about it and just don't rent from them again.

This happened to me w/ Hollywood Video. Since it was a specialty item (Wrestlemania XIII to be exact), they tried to get me to pay $90. A few weeks later they were all, "Oh hey btw we found it." Yeah.

This happened to me multiple times at Blockbuster. Only once were they correct, the first time this happened, and I'd returned it 2 hours after the deadline. I paid them, they kept fucking up in the scenario Alex describes and trying to charge me. Then I moved out of the city. Problem solved.

i had this happen to me a few years ago too. They were trying to charge me $90 for a stolen tape of "Cabeza de Vaca". i don't think that anyone else had checked out the movie in the months before i discovered they were holding me responsible for it. It seemed that they sent it straight to a collection agency. i went to the store to talk to the people, who insisted that i must pay for a tape i know that i returned. I asked them how many copies that they are supposed to have on inventory. One. When i walked back into the store to the section, they actually became agitated, and didn't want me to walk back there. I grabbed the movie off the shelf to hold it up high, and the matter was dropped after some more haggling. They still wanted to charge me for late fees, instead of me paying for the whole cost of the tape, but they eventually acknowledged that they couldn't prove the tape had been late if they had never checked it back in.

It made no sense that the employees wanted to be such jerks about it. It makes sense that the chain would want to screw the customers, but these people surprised me in their tenacity in trying to make me pay. It's not as if they get percentage of all late fees collected, right?
