"He'll save every one of us!"

Kingfish Beatbox Botox Funktion (Kingfish), Friday, 13 February 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

So you feel that you ain’t nobody
Always needed to be somebody
Put your feet on the ground
Put your hand on your heart
Lift your head to the stars
And the world’s for your taking

So you feel it’s the end of the story
Find it all pretty satisfactory
Well I tell you my friend
This might seem like the end
But the continuation
Is yours for the making

Yes you’re a hero!

Kingfish Beatbox Botox Funktion (Kingfish), Friday, 13 February 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend and I always thought it was "war rocket Ajax"

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 13 February 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

either way.

"OH WELL, WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER?

HAWKMEN! DIIIIIIIIIVE!"

Kingfish Beatbox Botox Funktion (Kingfish), Friday, 13 February 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the name of the (Russian?) doctor, who gets tortured with the memories machine? The jokes about his sexual perviness are the best bits.

pete s, Friday, 13 February 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"When I count to 3, I want you all to tell me, the name of my DJ. 1! 2! ..."

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 13 February 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Brian Blessed and Timothy Dalton and Richard O'Brien aka Riff-Raff in this film, and that wasn't even the half of it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 February 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: Flash vs. Buck Rogers http://ia.imdb.com/media/imdb/01/I/76/84/41m.jpg

Flash by a narrow margin for camp, actors, style, and starlets. Although, Erin Grey (in that jumpsuit) and Pamela Hensely narrowly edge out Flash's Melody Anderson and Ornella Muti.

I'm still freaked out about sticking my arm into things without being able to see my hand (i.e. a trash can) after that weird scorpion stump dweller out in the forest...

God, what a great film.. I saw it as a matinee too. Makes me feel like I'm 60.

andy, Friday, 13 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

And Max Von Sydow is currently the greatest living actor, in my opinion.

andy, Friday, 13 February 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy's 1st sentence totally OTM.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ornella Muti as the hot-ass evil princess = my first screen crush

(well, there was Nastassia Kinski and Tatum O'Neal, I guess.)

"Pathetic earthlings!!" shouts Ming the Merciless!

My best friend rented & watched this without me. I've never forgiven him.

Is there a phrase "to ming mercilessly"? Coz if there isn't there should be!

What's the name of the (Russian?) doctor, who gets tortured with the memories machine?

Zarkov, Pete. Played by top 'ole actor, Topol.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 14 February 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

only line of Zarkov's I can remember: "But my brain is all I have! I've spent all my life trying to fill it!"

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 14 February 2004 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I love this film. I must see it again. I wonder do they have it in Lazer?

Do you ever imagine Alan Partridge singing the theme tune? Ah-ha!

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 14 February 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

"OPEN FI-YAH!"

Did anybody ever interview Max von Sydow about this? i always wondered how he felt about doing the flick.

kingfish, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

Between that and his Conan cameo he had a great early eighties.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

This was the first film I ever saw on video

nate woolls, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

I was just thinking that this hasn't been on telly for ages.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

This was the first film I ever saw on video

The first three films I ever saw on video were Goldfinger, Night of the Lepus and Love at First Bite, all in one weekend at my cousin's house. Sweet.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

! Accentmonkey, are you me in a parallel universe or something?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

gee, how do you remember stuff like that?

xp WTF waht madness is that

g-kit, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

HOT HAIL!

Alan, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

one of Ming's weapons is HOT HAIL!

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

"This Ming is a psycho!"

"THIS MING...IS A PSYCHO."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

gee, how do you remember stuff like that?

Because we watched them about forty times each over the course of the weekend. Making the rabbits go backward over the houses was fun.

! Accentmonkey, are you me in a parallel universe or something?

Perhaps I am. Would that astound you?

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

I DON'T UNDERSTAND

g-kit, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

Perhaps I am. Would that astound you?

Not really, our sensibilities seem reasonably in sync.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

Somewhere I've got a bootleg of Queen in Tokyo playing most of the Flash Gordon soundtrack. I should dig that up.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

Ned, you should dig that up, oh yes.

Ed, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

paging Buster Crabbe

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

This is one of those films, like with Star Wars, Harold & Maude, the Gradurate, or (arguably) Wes Anderson movies, where you can't separate the film from its soundtrack. Without Queen, the movie is Brian Blessed and little else. The band was perfect for making this little late 70s/early 80s b-movie timeless.

When I finally grew old enough to start digging thru record bins instead of just tapes, this was the first piece of vinyl i ever bought:

kingfish, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

You want Buster, Morbs, you got it.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

eight years pass...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQoeEw6cALw

Just watched it for the first time, off Netflix. It's not much apart from Blessed and the soundtrack. Now I'll need to search out the DVD for this commentary track. "Brian Blessed!" "Look at that rocket, it's a rococo rocket, it's almost a piece of cake."

Princess Aura: [attempts to use her ring to open the door, it doesn't respond] They've changed the code!
Prince Barin: I've changed too, Aura.
Princess Aura: And I've changed, too.
Dr. Hans Zarkov: Oh, it's okay. I think I can work it out.
[starts to use Princess Aura's ring at different angles on the door]
Prince Barin: I love you. Will you marry me?
Princess Aura: I don't know, we'll try...
[breaks away as Barin moves in to kiss her]
Princess Aura: Not now, Barin...!
Prince Barin: You haven't changed...
Princess Aura: If I'm not at the wedding, I'll be shot
Dr. Hans Zarkov: [Finally manages to picks the electronic door lock with Aura's ring] A-ha! I thought it was one of the prime numbers of the Zeman series. *I* haven't changed.

ledge, Friday, 21 August 2015 18:31 (ten years ago)

That last line is this movie's equivalent of "made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs"

more side eye than a Picasso (snoball), Friday, 21 August 2015 18:39 (ten years ago)

I was wondering how anyone could write this off as "not much" but kingfish has an identical opinion just upthread so idk.
