matthew herbert damon versus benjamin mohammed affleck

i couldn't help but notice that damon was about ten spots lower than his bestest buddy affleck on the slut test 'most favored men' thing. i like damon though, he made me laugh more in dogma ('we have to kill jay and silent bob too? but those guys were alright!'). but affleck was funny as that asshole yuppie mall store guy who liked to fuck girls in a very uncomfortable place (the back of a volvo?) in mallrats. red-faced alcoholic vs. horse-faced goon, GO!

The most erotic and uncomfortable scenes in cinema recently were the bathtub scene and the my funny valentine scene in talented mr ripley. They were masterfully acted , sublime in there style and not mucked with nasty mwthod tracks . So damon of course

Yeah, but Affleck is a total BABE in Armageddon, which, I might add is a fucking brilliant movie and makes me cry LOTS everytime I see it. I LOVE that crazy guy in it. And I love Bruce Willis. Most of all I love the concept of oil drillers landing on an asteroid and drilling holes in it in which to place explosives. I reckon it is the 2nd best science fiction movie of recent times, Face Off being the best.

I saw Armageddon in the company of two revolutionary marxists one of who CRIED during the president's speech ( = "Can we fix it? Yes we can!" basically).

Matt Damon is facinatingly ugly. Ben Affleck is extremely hot. Is this even a question, ethan?

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely both can be killed without a moment's worry?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think it's sort of a question. i've only seen them in kevin smith movies though.

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just for their willingness to take the piss out of _Good Will Hunting_, they should be spared. I like Ben when he's not an Action Star (christ, he's in the next Clancy film, ick). I like Matt when he's being "indie" (like in Mr. Ripley, or OCEAN'S ELEVEN!!!!)

And Affleck in Mallrats was SO not funny. That movie's all about the Lees.

David Raposa, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait, are these their real middle names? Because that would be so fantastic.

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

psh, ally, duh, no.

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was really hoping though :(

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

six years pass...

Affleck should direct the next Bourne movie.

I'm happy that Gone Baby Gone was so good.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 22 October 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

Heh, I was going to revive this one: What awards elude Ben Affleck?

Jordan, Monday, 22 October 2007 03:34 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and OMAR (from the Wire) has a cameo in it as a cop!

two weeks pass...

I couldn't imagine Baby was good, but since this estimable critic thinks so (and as Casey is the acting talent of the family) I'll have to give it a shot.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 8 November 2007 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

it's very good

s1ocki, Thursday, 8 November 2007 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

"slaine"

and what, Thursday, 8 November 2007 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

Casey Affleck is not who I imagined Kenzie as when I started reading the first of these books, but the casting is spot on and fits better as I read more of the novels - a big tough guy wouldn't have worked at all, nor an older man.

milo z, Thursday, 8 November 2007 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

it's pretty good

sleep, Thursday, 8 November 2007 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

AFFLECK

gabbneb, Thursday, 8 November 2007 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

ill bill's group

la coka nostra?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 8 November 2007 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

geez, I think Affleck may have retroactively 'earned' his Oscar.

While Ed Harris' presence is kind of a plot giveaway, the Morgan Freeman casting is a great red herring. Sicinski in link above is OTM on how great Amy Ryan is as the coke-nightmare mom.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 November 2007 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

When Armond liked it I was suspicious, but he loves Stories For Proles.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 26 November 2007 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

Am I the only one who sees a bit of younger Burt L in the Affleck?

gabbneb, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

Burt L was never so irritating onscreen as Ben -- you don't mean CASEY, right? I found him talking shit to the Haitian druglord and busting a bar thug upside the head to be a tad incredible.

Alfred, Armond loooooathed GBG -- he really just reran his Mystic River "condescending to the working class" pan (which made at least a little sense w/ MR, but not here).

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, my mistake: I had the MR review in mind.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

Ben Affleck is very handsome at least in Jersey Girl

Heave Ho, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

He is almost comically square-jawed handsome, but in a way that screams Jarhead Fratboy

Dr Morbius, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

I mean Ben, and faint resemblance. I think he almost looks more like Burt than he looks like Casey.

gabbneb, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

the Kenzie/Gennaro novels are a serious case of diminishing returns, I don't think I'm going to get to Gone Baby Gone

The first one is a very, very good crime novel - not completely concerned with plot, not ridiculous, Gennaro has real personality.

And then the next two are basically harder-boiled Patricia Cornwell novels - serial killers and a villain straight out of Hannibal. The movie is so good, though, I wonder if GBG is better than those two.
