My friends are there. They inspire me, make me laugh, encourage me, know how to have fun, are into good music, like to dance, have the best pot in London, like a drink, like a shag, enjoy bird watching, and are essentially the greatest. Yeah, I'm soft in the head for 'em.
There are also some pretty good nights out and in to be had in London.

Richmond isn't great - HMV is the only record shop now, there are one or two good pubs (The Old Ship), but far too many yuppies and mega- rich people. Twickenham is far better, if only slightly less- expensive (250% increase in house prices in the last 7 years). It's absolutely superb for pubs and has gazillions of good curry houses, as well as having great river views and lots of green space. The second-hand record shop (Collectors Records in York Street) is still struggling along, and is now open on Saturdays only. At least it's still around. The MP is also Lib-Dem - Vincent Cable, but like Richmond it's a Tory seat at heart.
I wouldn't mind living in New York, or elsewhere in the UK I'd go for Cardiff or Bath or York.

Really, anywhere where it isn't freezing like it is here now --- and this isn't any sort of exaggeration, everything was covered in ice this morning.

Ideally, I'd have to say Boston (preferably, one of the less- expensive suburban nooks outside of Boston - cost of living would be the only suXor I can think of). That said, I haven't done much exploration of the greater US (beyond vague visits to DC & Philly and Coos Bay, Oregon). I do know that I do NOT want to live in NYC. That's non-negotiable.

I love confusing people.
lesley, dunedin is a small city in south island of new zealand, known for being the "edinburgh of the south" (all the street names are supposed to be edinburgh st names) (oh and on signal hill there is, get this, an authentic rock from edinburgh!) and for yellow eyed penguins and royal albatross and (so says nick dastoor) cheap sex. such user-friendly bands as the chills, the clean, the verlaines and the straitjacket fits all hail from dunedin.

well, then, we've cleared that up.
For myself, I'd ike to live in town of roughly 8,000 to 10,000 people, so it has local services like clinics and a grocery or two, located near some really great mountains full of wilderness trails. Bonus points if the local economy is not heavily tourist-based. Examples that spring to mind would include:
Bishop, CAEnterprise, ORLa Pine, ORWenatchee, WA
I expect there are many more such places sprinkled through the western USA, in Montana, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado, and so on. This is the archetype I am most drawn to. I'll never live in these places, though; I need to stay near the Portland, OR metro area, where my daughter lives.
Not that that's so bad, you know. Powell's Books and all that. Mountains and Oregon's coast in easy driving distance. No complaints, really.
