You shouldn't have to die from anything, really, but jeez.

OK, now where's the feel-good Cool Runnings-style movie adaptation?

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 15 February 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

And I though alligators coming out of the toliet was bad...Christ!

I thought this was going to be about the birds. My Dad told me that in one of the countries he visited whilst in the RAF (iirc Egypt) the kites used to swoop down and nick their lunch, but I don't think they could kill you.

IT COULD BE WORSE!

FEBRUARY 2: The body of a security-guard, Sok Sitha, 47, was found floating in a fish pond at 5:30 am in Tonle Bassac commune, Phnom Penh. Police said Sitha was probably electrocuted while electrocuting fish at the pond in the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts.

Exactly!

It kind of makes the Taliban ban on kite flying look sensible.

A lot of stuff in that police report involve:

- Fishing
- Motorbikes
- Hitting with sticks!

Yeah, Lahore is mental for the kite flying. When we lived there I and my sister were supposed to stay indoors during the festival, but occasionally sneaked out onto the roof to watch. It's terribly pretty, but umm dangerous. Most people use super-strong strings covered with glass dust for cutting other kite strings, but obv. metal is coming into vogue. Blimey.

ISLAMABAD, Feb. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- At least 17 people including eight children lost their lives and more than 500 injured while celebrating Basant or kites flying festival Sunday in Lahore, capital of eastern Punjab province, taking the death toll to 20 as three people were killed on Basant night, The Nation reported Monday.

Seven persons were crushed to death while trying to catch stray kites, six others died after falling from rooftop of their houses, two teenage boys died after being hit by stray bullets in two different incidents, while a 7-years old boy was electrocuted and a four years-old girl was killed when a stray string slit open herthroat.

Rescue officials said they picked up at least 24 patients whosethroats were cut by twine at different roads and shifted them to hospitals.

Throughout the day, the city remained echoing with aerial firing and fireworks and peaked at the sunset.

Sunday's killing of 17 persons took the death toll to 20 in the night-and-day festival this year. Last year too, as many as 20 persons were killed in Lahore while celebrating the yearly Basant.

So it's less deadly to be chased by bulls through a narrow road than it is to fly kites. My.

a friend of mine completed and is shopping around a script based on this festival..

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG they do this every year? And it's always a melee of death and dismemberment? Someone should seriously rethink this event.

I am laughing my ass off. Not at the death, which I will surely consider terrible once I compose myself, but at the grand absurdity. Grand!

Haha, Ned started this thread the day after I almost killed a small child with a plummeting kite.

Since then the kite itself has, in fact, died a sad death.
