Overrated fat men

I've got a few for you, Pavarotti, John Candy, John Goodman, Robbie Coltrane, Dom Deluise, Ron Jeremy (did I get that porn actors name right?) Lets not forget Drew Carey and Marlon Brando.

I don't know if these are male icons, or more to the point fat male icons equivalent to fat chick icons. Does it mean fat men look up to these people? or they have achieved despite being portly?

Menelaus Darcy, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You forgot Elvis (Presley and Costello).

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And Drew Carrey is overrated, not because he's fat, but because he's absolutely not funny.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, can you name any underrated fat guys, for starters?

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My role models - David Thomas and Black Francis. Not that I'm anywhere near as chubby as either, but it's nice to know if I was I could still potentially be cool.

Tom, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i always forget david thomas is chubby/fat. but somehow it always makes pere ubu *that much cooler.* i dont think its possible to be fat and overrated these days. maybe in rubens' time. not now.

jess, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Danny De Vito. This could really just be a list of Hollywood actors who have no problem getting work in Hollywood in spite of what they look like, unlike... (you may complete this sentence for yourself).

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I saw Pere Ubu last year and Mr Thomas is now of behemoth-like proportions. Chubby is not the word.

RickyT, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

EVEN BETTER. rock needs more fatties.

jess, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Santa claus is an underrated fat man. Maybe meatloaf too?

Menelaus Darcy, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jabba the hutt is underrated, and so is idi amin

Menelaus Darcy, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That guy from Ultrasound was totally overrated. Neville Southall was definitely underrated - he was the best 'keeper in the world for bloomin heck's sake.

Jonnie, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dom Deluise is not overrated, he is beautiful, he is Captain Kaos! He has a certain sartorial je ne sais quoi, with his flowery kaftans and berets. Homer Simpson brazenly co-opted his look in the episode where he got fat to collect disability. So I won't hear a word against him.

Nicole, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As much as it is commendable to start a fat man thread to oppose the fat chicks thread, it's not really as much of an issue for men, now is it? There seems to always be room for heavier men in popular entertainment. It's like my mom always says watching tv newsmen - "Women that ugly wouldn't have been hired".

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Plus, they get the caftans.

Nicole, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well yes, that is true, but I wanted to make the point that the fat men we are referring to are far more overweight than any of the women mentioned. Its rather unfair isn't it? I never thought of Kate Winslet or Sophie Dahl as anything other than attractive slim (thin is not a very prepossessing word) women. Hence the curiousity of whether these women are designated as fat, or just role models for the larger women out there, the industry's token attempt. I guess it is off putting either way.

Menelaus Darcy, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

John Goodman as the Rock of Gilbraltar here.

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i hate all of you even more cos of that elvis quip

Geoff, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The thing with Kate Winslet, Sophie Dahl, etc, is that they aren't really fat by any definition, they are "normal sized" (a term I hate, being smaller than both of them, I think anyone's healthy weight that they don't starve/gorge themselves to is "normal size") but by Hollywood standards that makes them "fat". So yes, the men are far fatter and by fairness standards that's wrong, but it's "acceptable" because men are allowed to be so, I suppose.

The most accurate comparison between a male actor and Kate Winslet would probably be Russell Crowe, who is "chubbier" than your average "I work out 20 hours a day" Ben Affleck sort but still perfectly normal sized and attractive. It's a warped mentality of comparison that makes Kate Winslet seem "huge" to people and a "good role model" to "fat chicks".

"you know what I mean?"

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

russel crowe has an enormously pleasing body type compared to 99% of other male heartthrob actor types. incredibly underrated fat man = PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN!

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Underrated by whom?

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

girls i know.

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As an actor or a person or a sex object? I mean, he's not really good looking so I suppose if you're asking the girls if they fancy him then I doubt they're going to...

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think they underrate his talent because they don't fancy him, but they should fancy him too.

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So how heavy are you, Ethan?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one-sixty at six feet, i could stand to lose about five pounds. what about you, ned? i heard somewhere that on your frame extra it's noticable.

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

http://www.scumm.net/rockpics/bobtorture/thpoisonidea_01 .jpg

Underrated? Poison Idea is the most underrated punk band ever.

Kris, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jess stands at an uncomfortable 225 at 6'6". (and he's got a "big" frame.) he could stand to lose 20 odd lbs.

oddly (or not so, given my predilections) i've never dated anyone under 130-160, even at *my* thinnest. i = r. crumb, apparently.

jess, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, me too.

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Of course it is on me. I've said as much. The problem with affording too many good meals. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but what are these bodyweights in proper county amounts?

mark s, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm eight stone to the hog's head.

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm a bushel and a peck and a kiss around the neck. tee hee.

jess, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan, losing 5 lbs would make you quite skinny wouldn't it? Or am I just a moron?

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If Ron Jeremy directed the "Something for Joey" video, then he's not over-rated. And John Goodman: how dare you.

David, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have a medium frame, and according to my new york public library desk reference, my ideal weight should be, hmm, 154-166. but i have a tummy so i just figure i could stand to lose 5 pounds. aw, i said tummy.

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey jess, there are lots of fat guys in rock. yeah, they all blow, but they exist. check: fred durst, the guy from smashmouth, the mavericks, etc etc. the "fat guy band" is a genre in itself.

di, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

im 240 at 6"1" etahn and i am not fat ,

anthony, Friday, 19 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My fiance is 6" or 6"1 and weighs 200, and he's not at all anything close to fat, tho he does have an enormous frame. I think Ethan shouldn't be too worried still.

Ally, Friday, 19 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the emperor in his new clothes must have been listening to 4'33''.
