where does the meme 'dog owners' faces looking just like those of their dogs' come from?

i know i've seen this in cartoons, comic strips, etc.

is this an ages' old trick of the caricaturist or a more recent invention?

several people's lives depend on your answering this question.

(feel free to post examples, but let's not get too far astray from this most critical of subjects.)

It's a meme that springs naturally from the FACTS.

I think that people find themselves attractive, and seek to surround themselves with things that remind them of them.

I know I do.

this is a historical inquiry.

As proximity and time increase, so does dog-human FMT (Face-Molecule Transference).

It's like the thing with the bicycles

Ricardo (RickyT), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

This one's so old and dusty it probably appeared in the first issue of Punch (in 1841).

It has been advised that bicycles be stored in gender-segregated areas to decrease the likelihood of Spontaneous Hermaphrobicycular Mutations.

Apparently couples not only start acting similarly over time - but start to look like each other too! Is this true?
