On the Consequences of Being Melodramatic ( A Plea to ILE)

Say, in the heat of the moment, you suddenly decide that you are going to take an extended break from a message board you've enjoyed reading and posting to for many years. Say, also, that you announce said intention to all and sundry, and receive some good wishes (thanks!). Now we get to the dilemma at hand, what if after a few days, everything feels okay and you really miss the message board, can you come back without looking a little foolish?

OR

I'm sorry I said I was taking a long break, I'm bored now, can I come back? Thanks!

I am one of those, Monday, 16 February 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone to thread.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 16 February 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar (Millar), Monday, 16 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Amazing!

I say don't fret. Matt C came back and that was grand, after all. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 February 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, tell everyone who you are and get a lot of great nice comments from people who you didn't even know cared a fig about you! I did.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 16 February 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to think it was a bit lame when people posted farewell threads, only to end up back posting again a few days later. But sometimes things do get a bit much and when someone decides to take a break, at that moment they genuinely believe they need to get away, so their feelings are quite valid when they say their goodbyes. At least with an official farewell thread you're not left wondering 'Whatever happened to X? They just disappeared without word, I hope they're okay'

Don't be embarrassed about missing the place and coming back so soon. It's like Hotel California here, you know that.

C J (C J), Monday, 16 February 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

YAY! Sorry for being lame! I will be non-lame all the time from now on!

Honey, I once tried to quit The Forum. Honest I did. I tried to get back to Life Before The Forum. I only lasted a couple of days when I realized I got terribly bored when I tried going to the places I used to go to. This is really the only place to go to now, the only place with 500-response threads in which at least a good 96% of those responses are well worth reading. Welcome back to the fold. And the next time you start to feel like things are getting to be a bit much, just up and disappear for a couple of days. Great restorative powers can be had then.

(FYI, this forum's been great for getting me turned off all political parties. Yep, it's official. I'm a Girl Without A Party. Party-Free Girl. No Party Female. Truly Independent Woman. Etc.)

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a bit egotistical to presume people CARE whether you leave or not, even if they do care. And it does look silly when you're too much of a wuss to honor your convictions (sorry Nate, sorry Matt) and you KNOW that the more you say these things the less any of us is inclined to believe them, so what's up with that? Whenever I need a break from this place (and I do, a lot), I slip quietly out the back door (no bye, no aloha) and slip quietly back in a week later or summat. The people who might care that I'm not posting will notice on their own and certainly know how to reach me...

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, so Jody thinks I'm a silly wuss? But I already KNOW I'm a silly wuss! (Sorry, I couldn't come up with something a little more insulting in response. I'm really losing my touch.) But thanks for the double-smack, I really appreciate it!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You're a silly wuss who's one of my favorite posters and I do hope you stick around!

What's his deal, anyways? Granted, I only saw the preview commercials for "Rock Me, Baby" but if you could expound further on his putziness that'd be swell
