Well, did he?

No, Beryl Bainbridge deserved it, but she wasn't in the shortlist.
I haven't read Carey's Ned Kelly book (yet) so I can't say, but 'Jack Maggs' and 'Oscar & Lucinda' were superb. At least it wasn't Ian McEwan.

yeah he probably did. i started re-reading The Unusual Life of Tristan Smith the other day and man, it's so twisted. but in a good way!

The preceding three comments gladden me greatly.

eighteen years pass...

True History of the Kelly Family has finally been adapted for film... George Mackay gets his kit off and Nicholas Hoult interrogates a baby at gunpoint, so I'll probably take a look.

I’d have liked Carey to have written that one, actually. The True History of the Kelly Family

book was fantastic, partly for the voice iirc but hell of a good story too.

not sure how or why you'd adapt the book to film since it's just historical events with a stylish narrator. the trailer makes it look like a trainspotting knockoff.

George Mackay fascinates me. He's so blank-looking but I like it.

Good taste, bit Victorian but who isn't? (jed_), Monday, 23 December 2019 20:41 (six years ago)

I wouldn't say blank-looking -- he does the Sensitive Young Men alright in Pride, Capt Fantastic etc -- but like young William Hurt he has a wide-eyed thing like he's just been whacked in the forehead with a plank. Not in this trailer though.
