OK, most are bad and should be destroyed. But which ones should be saved (when the revoluion comes, obv)?
Search: John McCain, Colin Powell, Chuck Hagel, Bob Dole

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

That title should be plural. Unless you want to choose which body parts of a certain Republican should be searched and destroyed...

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Abraham Lincoln

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Well let's just say his statues should remain.

Hell, if we're counting dead ones, Eisenhower wasn't too bad.

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

George Washington. Even dead 200+ years, his policies/enterprising spirit has done more for the country than most of today's live specimen.

George Schultz is oddly kind of cool. He's one of those old school Republicans - less government intrusion, more civil liberties, etc. - that make the neo socially conservative Repubs cringe. He's was seriously into legalizing drugs - not pot, HEROIN - for very convservative reasons.

I second John McCain, he's a good, decent gent. And his wife's mighty fine. heh. And I used to know his daughter (she was the receptionist at Atko Records in the early 90's).

The rest of them should be flayed alive.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

a disturbing thought crossed my mind though watching Dole on the Daily Show; if he had won eight years ago, and won re-election, he could conceivably STILL be President, and while he's kind of a funny guy, he does NOT seem to be very sharp any more. Now isn't that scary? Don't vote for old people!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

do we save or destroy Ah-nold?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Good point, eisbar. Republicans make better losers than Democrats, I think. I doubt Al Gore has much of a sense of humor about the whole 'Supreme Court installing Bush and ruining the world' thing.

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Search John Warner, just because the republican party in Virginia tried to get rid of him in the primaries because he wasn't right-wing enough for them. This was a reelection campaign, by the way, which makes it almost unheard of.

for some strange reason, some of my philly relatives really like arlen spector. which makes absolutely no sense, since he's nowhere near as moderate as his reputation, he's the guy that came up with the whole "single bullet" nonsense and berated anita hill, plus he's LEGENDARY in DC and PA for being impossible to work with (b/c he's a total asshole). and he doesn't seem to bring an awful lotta pork to the state.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

that said, spector isn't as over-the-top right-wing as santorum. and he bitch-slapped robert bork, which gives him SOME points i suppose.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Teddy Roosevelt -- labor laws, conservation, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Pure Food Act, corporate trustbusting? They don't make Republicans like that anymore.

Richard Lugar probably saved Indianapolis when he was mayor by consolidation of the county into the city limits. It was a very risky and controversial thing to do at the time, but in the long run it has worked out well.

Mahatma Gandhi?

if memory serves me right, (a) he had some nice things to say about hitler (even though he wasn't a nazi); (b) for a while, he was against fighting in WWII (though NOT b/c he loved hitler); and (c) he apparently had some odd views about african-americans.

mr. simpson only became kinda OK after he retired. before that, though, he was just as much of a jerk as any other GOP senator.

i also nominate lee atwater, b/c at least he repented (after having a tumor taken offa his brain).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Atwater ever got level. That tumor was his LEAST malignant part!

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how this thread began with the assumption that 'most are bad and should be destroyed'

I feel the same way about tax-crazy democrats

I'm glad somebody mentioned Barry Goldwater - "Extremism in the face of peril is no vice" - one of my favorite quotes.

Strange - that's not the same quote I read. Walter Benjamin, to thread! But anyway...you get the idea.

i also nominate lee atwater, b/c at least he repented (after having a tumor taken offa his brain).

And also, while I believe in legitimacy of repentance, Atwater strikes me as the type for whom this conversion might best be described as "transactional."

WRT: But anyway...you get the idea.

I do.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess that i will search george ryan, former govenor of illinois for the fact that he put a moratorium on the death penalty even though he did so really fucking shady stuff and now is paying for it.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

goldwater was, undoubtedly, a better human being than LBJ. but i woulda vote for LBJ, then and now. not to mention that LBJ was a bonafide political genius and (UNLIKE tricky dicky) he didn't get caught!

(nb: i know that atwater was a sleaze, and that deathbed confessionals are really cheesy ... still, there was something kinda punk-rock about him.)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i confessed in another, earlier thread that had i lived in NYC during the 2002 election that i woulda voted for george pataki. though i wouldn't go so far as to say that pataki is all that admirable. and i would NOT have voted for him over mario cuomo (andy cuomo, on the other hand ...)

a lot of NJ (and northeastern) GOPers are more moderate than their party. but the NJ wingnuts also vote heavily in the primary, and sometimes they end up nominating someone WAY more conservative than the rest of the state -- like bret schundler for governor 3 years ago.

which reminds me -- the GOPer than schundler beat in the primary, and who Corzine beat for the senate 2000 election -- was a relatively moderate/conservative-but-not-crazy guy named Bob Franks (who had been my U.S. House rep when i lived w/ the parents). i felt sorry for the guy -- first b/c Corzine outspent him, and then b/c he got waylaid by the wingnuts. not sorry enough to VOTE for him, though :-)

giuliani was great on 9/11, true. before that, though, he was an asshole of the highest order.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Eisbar, why would you have voted for Pataki? I'm just curious.

hstencil, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought that he was doing a good job, he is relatively moderate (as far as republicans go), being a republican would be better in getting post-9/11 money from a GOP white house and congress, and i was sorta suckered by his campaign promises. plus mccall did not impress me at all.

i wouldn't have for him the 1st 2 times, though.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"having a republican governor," that is.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Giuliani was a nightmare before 9/11. New Yorkers all know that. But he was Jerry frickin' Brown compared to Bloomberg.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the sheer amount of corruption in the first two Pataki administrations would've been enough for me not to vote for him a third time (I couldn't anyway, wasn't registered in NY yet). The man makes George Ryan look like Elliot Ness, yet nobody seems to care.

According to IMDB, Dornan was also in a movie called "The Imposter," which is appropriate considering the way he misrepresented his combat experience.

Did they refer to his political career on MST3K?

Nemo (JND), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yes, my friend. And in more than that episode. He wasn't a running joke every time or anything, more like a general reference point such as Pat Buchanan.
