johnny (Oops), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

you know i did my time interviewing a million lesbians and radical gynecological activists, but when i went home at the end of the day it was IN WITH THE TAMPON!!!

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you think women dealt with their period before synthetic pads/tampons, todd? :) Still, I'm with orbit, its not for me. I've read some crap about how washing ones own menstrual "cloths" is some kind of get with your own cycle and mother earth twang, but eh.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting thought though: during the bosnian conflict the war meant there was a shortage of a lot of essential supplies, one of which was womens sanitary products, so they had to make do somehow.

People do use them and it's a good idea. Much better than tossing disposable ones in the trash to eventually end up as landfill and take thousands of years to disintergrate.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, then it becomes rag city and then washing them like bloody diapers.
when i was training to do fieldwork in the Amazon, Marlene Dobkin del Rios, (an anthropologist) told me to take two things for the women: bras and cloth.
'nuff said! some things are universal.

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno, i just dont like the idea of reusing that particular thing, i am all for conservation in just about every other possible way.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

well do you reuse underpants?

i trust my washing machine to get things clean.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i am just saying that i usually dont bleed or whatever in my underpants, etc.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but if you cut yourself and got blood on your favorite shirt, wouldn't you put it in the wash and wear it another day?

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair point that. I mean even with tampons, one sometimes er, has accidents, and we wash those away... I must admit I never really paid much thought to the landfill issue. Hm.

xpst thats to ipso

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't they pretty bio-degradable? You think they would be by now.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

personally i get my period so rarely i don't tend to think about this much either, but i've seen these handmade pads before and I think they're a good idea. I might run myself up a test model on the sewing machine tonight.

x-post

no i don't think they are oops

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i know, in an ideal world i would use the disposable cup or pads, but the truth is that it is all too messy; and if there is one modern convenience i am going to revel in, it is my inalienable right to use tampons.

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

last period i got lasted a month and i used nothing to stem the flow, i just had shitloads of showers.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, i wish i could get away with that.

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah mine are heavy as well, even with tampons I end up in a damn mess, its only for about 2 or 3 days but I just cant get away with pads or anything like that :(

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)
