Cause of Death: Brit Awards

The kind of programme that almost had me grilling my own fingers. This was probably the first time I'd watched it since the 1996 'Jarvisgate' edition, and I barely made it halfway through before retreating to silence and a good book.

Among the problems with this endlessly vulgar show:

The clips of the nominees: they'd put in this beat so that all the songs a) had a dance beat (shades of Brent's 'drum n bass shit) and b) were the same tempo/time signature. WTF??? And they'd let some kid lose on the digital editing.

The alleged duet of Andre 3000 and Beyonce. I can't go into this. I'll hit someone.

The 'newsflash' intro for Fiddy.

All round, this has put me off pop music for life. I now see that Alex in NYC is right about everything.

B-but Cat Deely riding a huge champagne bottle.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

(I didn't actually watch it)

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Basement Jaxx won an award though!

What was so awful about this Dre/Beyonce duet that everyone keeps going on about then?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

what were you expecting Enrique? there are a few threads about the Brit Awards on ILM btw

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

if last week was mostly rubbish rock from the NME/ this week rubbish pop and retro dork-ness at Brits.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I wondered how long it would be before someone started a Brits bash. Easy target.

I think it's got better since they outlawed indie bands.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem -- yeah, but... ILM.

The Cat Deeley bit was gross. Lad culture kind of passed me by; but in any case she's anodyne: this tawdry attempt at upsexing sent all the wrong singles.

I can't pinpoint my problem with the 'Hey Ya!'/Crazy in Love' interface. It was partly lame because there was no collaboration -- it was just two songs back-to-back (incidentally, what's with Beyonce's nipple stimulation thing in the video, and in last night's performance -- weird). Now I like these songs, or did till they were played until dead, so I dunno why this bit was so terrible.

Also, the show was too fast -- I'm not asking for Cat to have the wit of Steven Fry... but, this was hella witless, and there was no sense of build-up, and there were too many similar awards, with similar nominees. Next year let's get WBS to present.

ENRQ (Enrique), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

OH THE HUMANITY

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"And here to present the award for Best International Newcomer, please welcome BRETT ORMEROD!"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Just to make DJ Martian *really* happy...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

even more irrelevance !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"What do you think of the Urban nominations this year, Claus Lundekaam?"

I think the Brits / Southampton squad interface is the route to follow.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

To be honest, I preferred it when it was called the BPI awards - it had more gravitas.

"And the nominations for Best Female Artists are...

Annie Lennox
Jakki Graham
Tracey Ullman
and ...
Kate Bush"

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but Matthew LeTissier and Marilyn from Home and Away riding on a giant champagne bottle!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"What do you think of the Urban nominations this year, Claus Lundekaam?"

I was actually hoping there'd be an award for the best Rustic act too.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

How on earth can Busted win the best breakthrough?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Marian Parhars is a big fan.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

it's better than the darkness winning. they were fun at first, but now they're starting to annoy me.

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

They changed 'newcomer' to 'breakthrough' yet still the moans come.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Love. Cats.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Busted were annoying at first but now they're starting to be fun

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Busted put the Undertones ugliness into context. That's not me speaking, it's that Ecuadoran misfit whose name escapes me.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

No don't get me wrong, Busted are fine (if you like that type of thing) but how can they be 'breakthrough' they are on their 2nd album & what have they done that's so amazing?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

New award for 2005:

"Band who've made the greatest progress from being annoying to being fun"

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle and Sebastian to thread!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaargh, X-post!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

PP - who would you have awarded the best breakthrough act award to?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

G - I think you mean Augustin Delgado. Currently on tour with Snow Patrol.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Personally I would have awarded it to Dizzee Rascal. He has brought something different to the table, so to speak. The likes of Busted have their own 'best pop act' category.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY CAT I THINK YOU ARE THE BEST YOU KEEP DOING WHAT YOURE DOING I WATCHED TGE BRITS AND YTHOUGHT YOU WERE GREAT HOLLA HBACK AT ME

David Prutton (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but PP, best "breakthrough/new/we haven't given them an award yet" artist is meant to be a cross-genre thing. Hence Belle and Sebastian going head to head with Steps.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

but that's like saying that Busted have brought something different to the music world as well*. The boybands who don't just dress identically and dance behind their mikes

*that may be wrong, cos North & South and Catch did it before them.

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And The All New and Improved and Indie Let Loose.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Delgado! Excellent shout Matt DC. Snow Patrol won the 'band most likely to be fey in 2004' award. Presented by Jo Tessam.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

pinkpanther otm

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

only problem being Dizzee hasn't actually sold enough records i guess

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, 'I Love U' was released as a white label in 2002, so he's clearly disqualified.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the way Dizzee talks about east end issues in his lyrics, "ROADWORKS on the Lea Bridge Road mean TAILBACKS for heavy loads"

MikeyG (MikeyG), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hey i didn't know Busted had a song called 'Britney' (from their 2002 debut album)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

OK Dom, you are right, it does span all the genres, but Busted aren't doing anything different. They are singing throw away pop songs, which can in no way be described as breakthrough surely.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Breakthrough isn't a synonym for 'innovative', you know.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

My mate Jason Dodd says that "breakthrough" has nothing to do with musical originality and everything to do with suddenly becoming famous and selling records.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(xpost)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

think "significantly raised profile" or "best news"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Was 50 Cent really on the run last night?

MikeyG (MikeyG), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, you make it sound like it's a weasily definition from The Man. That's what 'breakthrough' usually means in the context of celebs, isn't it.

"After appearing in a series of well regarded independent films, Scarlett Johansson's breakthrough occurred with her leading role in Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation"

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

But it IS a weasily definition from The Man! It's the Brit awards!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Changing Newcomer to Breakthrough is just the BPI saying 'shit, not many big decent new bands came through in the last year huh? and we're already giving three to The Darkness...what about those young punk-pop scamps my daughter likes then?'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I see goth music was overlooked again.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The two most embarrassing moments for me (only saw the first hour) were the pantomime dramatised intro concocted for 50 Cent; and the appearance, during Beyonce's performance of 'Crazy', of some idiot in Union Jack boxer shorts (in both cases why on earth do American artists of that stature agree to pander to the idiotic whims of the directors of a 2nd division awards show? It makes them look undignified). Lemar's over-long, over-gushing acceptance speech was pretty bad too. That was one area where they seem to have improved things - cutting down the 'thanks to..' quota in the speeches.

Agree totally on the beat-mixed clips as well. Rachel Stevens stumped the digital kid though. Try as he might he couldn't find a way of mixing out of the previous thing or using that beat behind RS (LA Ex)so there was a short gap.

David (David), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's almost as if some people on here watched the show without drinking.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(weaselly)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Breakthrough = a sudden advance especially in knowledge or technique

Surely this does mean something 'new'?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Madchen OTM. That hideous squalling duet between whatsisname & whatshername with the pretty face was unbearable & made me want to kick the TV in.

Mooro (Mooro), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

PP - do you really never hear 'breakthrough' in the kind of context I illustrated above?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, but I've always interpreted it as to the meaning I'm referring to with regards to the brits.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I only watched the last part. Yes, crap. I switched it off before the Darkness struck up, because I can't stand them. Highlight of the bit I saw was Missy Elliott bursting onto the stage with a torrent of her "Pass The Dutch" gibberish and setting the place on fire. Too short, though.

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinky, I have to say I think you've been misled all this time.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely this thread should be retitled
Cause Of Death: Hatred Of Fun.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

(I posted that two hours ago, it would have been the second post if it weren't for Dastoor, and only just got back from my meeting to find it was blocked. Bah!)

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

OK fine, all awards to be split equally between Busted & the Darkness. Both completely shite bands.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

IT'S THE RETURN OF ROCK

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

*shudders at the Darkness being 'rock'*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I just wrote my comments on NYLPM. I took notes.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Not much to add, but my thoughts are here.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

seventeen years pass...

Accidentally caught some of the BRIT Awards on TV. So, "celebs" social distance and the key worker crowd doesn't?
