Work: answer to life's ills

So - I've been pissy all morning, spending too much time on ILX, getting ratty with people on the phone, losing all motivation. Even lunchtime seems hollow and I don't enjoy eating. What's up with that?! So I decide the only thing to do is actually do difficult or crappy tasks on my desk. And now I feel great!

I dunno if this is worth a thread, actually. Discuss work as a positive thing. I guess.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If I'm in a pissy mood, work can get rid of it definitely. I'd rather just go to the pub though!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Insert "meaningful" before "work" in yr thread title and it's about as OTM as anything that anyone has ever said, but you're right that there can be something immensely satisfying about getting your, you know, paperclip collection sorted out, or throwing out all the pens that don't work. I would say more but I actually gotta go do some work!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Normally I'd agree with you, Mark but 'work', at the moment, means trying to resolve a problem that's been bugging me for a couple of weeks and I'm still no closer to finding a solution. I was happier wasting time and fielding trivial requests. Bah.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaargh... pissiness returning... still no sign of Scarlett Johansson... must... read... contract......

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, tracer is correct. plus, it can change your outlook on things if you separate the concepts of "your job" vs "your life's work".

you do one to the pay the rent, while the other is something you identify with. If you're lucky, the two are the same.

Kingfish Beatbox (Kingfish), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i would kill for work right now. its the last piece of my life that needs to fall into place. (well hardly the "last" but certainly in the "bottoming out and starting over" phase i am currently in.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

sense of accomplishment, even trivial.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in such a bad mood when I got home I actually cleaned my kitchen and bathroom. It worked.

We have a cleaner who comes once a week, incidentally. I think this is the most irrational thing I have ever done in my life.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

we had no idea you were so posh.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i really need to vacuum this sty.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely this should be: Illness: Answer to all life's work.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

we have a cleaner as well. it wasn't up to me, the house had one when i moved in, but i'm not complaining

i feel pretty bad for doing next to no work so far this week - the thrill only lasts so long. i'd get a greater one from doing something constructive and purposeful so perhaps i'll go and do just that, now.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Part of said cleanup involved the removal of a ten day old half-eaten chicken carcass from the fridge. It wasn't mine.

Cleaner = necessary evil in my flat.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i would agree with work satisfaction being a good way of relieving depression, but part of me feels that i wouldn't have been so depressed if i didn't have to work at all in the first place..

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(i'm on holiday just now, and relishing it you see ;))

(oh dear i'm spending my holiday in the far east on ile)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes you are Ken. Shouldn't you be off drinking £30 bottles of beer somewheres?

robster (robster), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey ken! How was the wedding?

I am doing sod all work at the moment, but did feel a surge or righteousness when I completed a fiddly task earlier.

There is a cleaner every two weeks at my flat. She never does the tiles in the bathroom, so they're a teeny bit mouldy now. I may have to break out the bleach myself at some point.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

'of'. Dang.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Successfully tested a fix for another problem. Feel a bit better now.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Thing is, I spend the first hour of the day working hard and getting lots done, then reward myself with six hours of ILE.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

That was how I used to be, madchen. But now it must be at least 50% work!! Go me!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, have you not seen Bruce Almighty? It explains the virtue of work quite well. I kinda like doing stuff like taking old library books to the skip and chucking the mountain of paper on my desk into the recycling bin, it's therapeutic.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I did a lot of work this morning and cleared up some hoohah and that combined with a few other things means I am happily relaxed at present. A very good thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

if work is the answer to lifes ills i must live in a alternate universe. this is the worst place in the world to be.
