what now?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it was an own-goal myself

chris (chris), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Gary Doherty scores for Ireland!

pete s, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

the sky is falling on our heads

chris (chris), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

that's it, it must be the magic potion

pete s, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Christ rode a Vespa. Fucking mod.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Ledley King was good tonight.

Other shocks:

Jason McAteer competent against the Brazilians

David James, the goal wasn't his fault

Scholes is still being talked about as too good not to score for England

run it off (run it off), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

His wife says he's too good to go down.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

just like Spurs...

that Pauleta free kick was sooooo predictable - knew it would be a goal. he was class tho, he and Deco looking very tasty indeed. not a bad result despite some dodgy defending and inevitable failure to maintain second half lead.

didn't watch Wales v Scotland highlights enough to judge whether Wales were great or Scotland were just really really (really) woeful - but Wales finished the game with NO Premiership players on the field, hmmmmm...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

He's the New Chris Powell!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 19 February 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

ireland brazil was a fairly awful game, although a decent result confidence wise
robbie keane and clinton morrison's confidence won't be up too much after a few awful misses though

robin (robin), Thursday, 19 February 2004 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Deadly Ledley defended well last night even though I was fairly sure it was actually a Portugal own-goal. He should be playing in defence for Spurs instead of Dean Richards... if only we'd signed a defensive midfielder etc etc.

He might have edged ahead of Matthew Upson by now. Still, I'd be amazed if King actually made it to Euro2004, despite being a headline-writer's dream. 'Sven's got Led in his pencil' - arf!

The Pauleta free kick was mumm-ra.

There might be an argument for giving either Joe Cole or Kieron Dyer a full 90mins behind the front two in place of Paul Scholes by now.

Wayne Bridge is much better than Ashley Cole. In all ways.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the Ireland game was pretty good. They played well too. Graham Kavanagh looked v. impressive. Robbie Keane did miss an unbelievable chance at one point though. Morrison just needs to play more Premiership matches. He played well too although I was surprised he won man of the match.

Michael B, Thursday, 19 February 2004 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Wayne Bridge is much better than Ashley Cole. In all way

Is this cos he's a gooner?

I thought England looked good, but Owen was a bit poor; looked indecisive at times.

N. Ireland - is Sanchez the first left-footer to manage them?

Wales looked a different class to Scotland; Robbie Earnshaw looks weird. Like an alien from Marz Attacks or something. Still, the boy dun good etc.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 19 February 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

More and more after football games, listening to the reports on the radio the next day, I find myself wondering, like an old skool NME letters' page correspondent... "Were they even at the same game as me?" I thought England were woeful last night, saved from a hammering only by Portugal's waywardness and ineptitude. It was such a scrappy game of football, especially in comparison with the Ireland-Brazil game which may be the best 0-0 I have ever seen.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 19 February 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

David James' throw straight into touch was post-modern football at its best. Ledley King gave him a 'I don't understand why you did that' look.

David Healy confused his teammates with a goal.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Thursday, 19 February 2004 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

James's botched catch that sent the ball flying towards the back of the net was a thing of beauty. Apparently it was windy, what a lovely commentator, making excuses for him!

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

He's been taking tips from Ian Walker against Bolton last week.

Thank god for Southgate or whoever it was that cleared off the line.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll always remember David James for THAT save against Turkey and tho he's made quite a few gaffs he's still got some work to do if he wants to cancel out that one act of genius

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

did anyone else see Alan Smith calling Danny Mills a 'fucking dick' or similar when latter launched an unattainable ball only vaguely in his direction. oooh the petulant scamp...(i'm also not happy with Mills tho)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Watching him at West Ham this season, I was amazed at the number of times he kicks / throws the ball into touch. Not just once or twice, but a Malaysian Betting Syndicate number of times.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Thursday, 19 February 2004 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Ireland Brazil was a fantastic game, one of the best Irish performances I've seen in a long long time, when did we start playing such good football?

Robbie Keane is a waster. He might be good for Spurs but he's completely inconsistent and unreliable for Ireland, always missing chances.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

!! best striker Ireland have had in my memory

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

He's not a great finisher though, I've seen some shocking misses from Keane over the last couple of seasons, despite his recent run of form. He can curl a beautiful one in from the edge of the area and then miss an open goal from five yards out.

Keane needs to be playing behind someone like Defoe or Kanoute really, an out and out striker that Ireland don't really have at the moment.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Keane is no Aldridge, never will be, we never replaced old moustachio really, he used to score hat-tricks! In them days you would beat an Eastern European team 5-0. FIVE NIL!

I don't rate Keane for Ireland, he doesn't even turn on the skill for us all that often, agree he's not an out and out striker though, we desperately need one, perhaps Morrison is a second rate one, he looked good last night but deep down you know he's not top draw.

I mean if you actually think about the number of big games Keane has underperformed in it's shocking.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That save by Calamity against Turkey? I haf forgotten it already. Oh dear oh dear. My memory is addled.

I fear James. He always makes a gaffe, which is fun when watching West Sham, but not good for England. Bring back Tim Flowers.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

What's wrong with Kirkland, is it so bad to play a keeper who never plays at club level. He always looks ok for Liverpool.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

okay i will concede regarding Aldridge, but i like Keane

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Aldridge never scored that many goals for Ireland though. Mainly because Charlton had him scurrying around the place harassing defenders, which wasn't his style. Keane is what, four goals off Quinn's record already? Matt is otm about Keane needing to be playing behind someone. He's a second striker more than anything.

Michael B, Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember "Aldo" scoring alot in the campaigns he was in, he had a reputation at the beginning for never scoring but kind of shook that in the end.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

and i thought the whole deal with Keane was that he was yer upfront marksman just waiting for the right service, hmmmm - is there a suggestion he is like Rooney in that respect then? (i'm not convinced Rooney is best up front alongside another striker either...ideally Rooney or Scholes would be right behind two strikers - Scholes got his goals when he was able to get forward as he pleased - i think i'd rather see either Scholes or Rooney just behind Owen and HESKEY rather than Scholes dropping back with Owen and Rooney up front)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Keane's always been more of a dribbler than a goalscorer, didn't he play on the wing at Coventry? Or was it just he always drifted wide?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Heskey's inclusion is urgent and key, with Gerrard taking Scholes' position and Parker or Lampard at the bottom point of the diamond.

chris (chris), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a shame, in a way, that Gerrard had to miss the game last night, as he's been on fire in club games lately.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

damn right, i'm fed up with it - msg for Gorgeous Gerrard - this is not Spurs and you are not Dazza, stop getting injured!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

If I was playing with that bunch of no-marks I might get injured too. (I should mean England but I mean Liverpool, sadly)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

He wasn't injured - he had leave cos his gf was having a baby! Leave poor Stevie alone!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Good call on Gerrard/Scholes... but surely Lampard is replacing Gerrard in the diamond at the moment? So you've still got a hole in there on one side that Nicky Butt can't really fill.

I can't see Scholes being dropped in the forseeable future though, although it might actually benefit England to see him injured, weirdly. Not as much as it would benefit them to have him playing as well as he does for Manyoo, but still...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think next time England get a penalty, Scholes should take it. It'll settle him.

At no point last night could you look at the players on the pitch and think 'ahh, diamond'. There are too many words wasted on systems and formations. That's my opinion.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Thursday, 19 February 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

alright then, we need another skilfull yet tough midfielder to complement and cover Gerrard's rampaging forward.

Can Scott Parker do that job? I'm not sure that Nicky Butt can, or Phil Neville

chris (chris), Thursday, 19 February 2004 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"Marauding" forward.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 19 February 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you're being a bit harsh on Keane - remember late goals against Germany and Spain in the last World Cup. He does have a tendency to be a bit of an Andrex puppy with the ball though.
All that diamond stuff is nonsense when you're playing with four central midfielders.

Jonnie, Thursday, 19 February 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Bridge is indeed much better than Cole. England looked all at sea for the whole of the 1st half - they really are one of the most unconvincing international teams until they get into their stride - and they can't afford to give away 45 minutes every match.

King looked okay, Southgate looked strong (I'd definitely take him to Portugal in the summer), James looked a complete liability who should never play for England again. Rooney - I dunno. He seems to be losing his spark.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 19 February 2004 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be inclined towards Robinson in goal. I'd persist with Scholes, I think - I do believe he'll find his form for England again. I'd think that King has a lot to do to make the squad, assuming the likes of Campbell, Terry, Southgate and Woodgate are all fit, but you never know. I would play Bridge ahead of Cole - not so much to choose going forward, for me, but Cole's positional sense in defence is still really bad, and this causes all kinds of trouble. Bridge seems not to have such a weakness, and I don't think Cole outshines him in any area - I think playing with Pires sometimes makes him seem more talented in attack than he really is.

I'm not terribly optimistic about England. Rooney looks good at this level, but he's hardly been banging loads of goals in this season, and the Owen droughts seem to be coming along fairly regularly over the last few years, so I'm worried about goalscoring (and I'm far from persuaded that Heskey, Smith, Vassell or anyone else are good replacements). We now have about eight really good central midfielders, but still no one strong on the left, and I'm far from completely happy with any of our right backs, even though it's the left everyone talks about. It's the worst crop of keepers in living memory, by a long way. I guess if everyone plays above themselves and the key stars hit peak form we have a chance this Summer, but France look a few classes above us - I can't see us winning the midfield battle against Viera and Makalele, coping with the creativity of Pires and Zidane, or stopping Henry and Trezeguet from scoring, for instance.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh i'd take Southgate too - probably ahead of Campbell and Terry even. i'd stick with James in goal for now , he is always rubbish in friendlies but has done okay when it matters more. we need a decent new right back as i don't think Mills can cut it enough really.

Is David Moyes suffocating Rooney somewhat now?

would be interesting to see Parker with Gerrard - a shame that so many of these players all do the same job. i still like Hargreaves personally.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair point about the World Cup, I was thinking that, but like alot of the squad I'm not sure he's reached that form since.

Mind you last night was really impressive. Reid looks some player, the passes he was playing were fantastic.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing is Henry and Van Nistelrooy have made all the English strikers look shit - no-one can touch them but hopefully Owen will return to form by May. and if Gerrard is fully fit and arsed enough then i think he can definitely cut it with the French midfield

tempted to suggest Shearer be recalled...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Rooney just ain't all that, face it.

James

Bridge
Campbell
Terry
Neville (though it pains me to say it)

Thompson
Lampard (or Parker)
Gerrard
Beckham

Heskey (or Sutton)
Owen

chris (chris), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

SUTTON?!!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

CHRIS SUTTON?!!!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Sutton??? Shearer?????? bludy 'ell we'll be clamouring to have teddy back next...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Beardsley?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely he means a young up and coming prospect also called Sutton. Surely...?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's just throw in Dion Dublin and be done with it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

chris is just trying to please the missus ;)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking "Big Cas" could replace Robbie Keane.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The presence of Heskey or Sutton or Crouch would just mean route 1 stuff and consequently a lot of wasted posession. Not that I care all that much but I might as well get myself warmed up to argue with English people as that's what I'll be doing all summer.
Reid looked quality for Ireland - what would England give to have a similar left sided player available to them? Who's going to sign him in the summer?

Jonnie, Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

never mind goalkeepers and strikers - England's two biggest problems are still a lack of decent Ince/Batty-esque (tho Gary McCallister could actually a better precedent) ballkeeping midfield general and Ryan Giggs

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm trying to think of what the Great English Disappointments XI would look like. Richard Wright or Ian Walker in goal? Dean Richards commanding central defence. Nicky Barmby a shoe-in for that problem spot on the left, McManaman on the other wing and Redknapp playing in between. Robbie Fowler and Chris Sutton upfront, but there's stiff competition from Fran Jeffers and Kevin Phillips.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Fowler being a "disappointment" was mainly cos he was never given a chance at his peak cos your Spurs mafia were in charge of England. You could say the same about McManaman and sicknote Anderton keeping him out.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't really argue with that, although you could say the same for Andy Cole but let's face it who was going to unseat Shearer?

I still think Jamie Redknapp's appalling injury record robbed England of something potentially great... he came on for a bit in Euro96 and was inspirational before getting himself injured.

Although it was kind of funny watching Ray Parlour get dropped from the England squad every time a major tournament occurred due to Anderton getting fit just in time after a season out.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd have been surprised if Sutton had been picked, but I think Thompson should have gone to Portugal, definitely

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

How many caps did McManaman get? Quite a few, wasn't it?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant exactly Chris Sutton - a proven goalscorer, can also play at the back in an emergency. He is great in the air, yes, and has a fantastic partnership for Celtic, playing with a much more mobile striker in Larsson, similar to how he would be asked to play for England with Owen (or Vassell, or Defoe). what's wrong with that suggestion, and how is it worse than the others? Obviously though I'd prefer Emile there though.

chris (chris), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Sutton! Chris Brown!

I'd rather see the latter play for England.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

UR R ALL MASONIC PRODDY DOGS.

Everyone knows that wearing the Hoops, Chrissy (for it is he) is a godlike figure who bestrides the pitch like a behemoth. A deft touch, vision, physical presecence, can drop in at the back, can hold it up, can flick it on, can shoot with a traction egine based foot.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Runs like the farmer's boy he is though.

Jonnie, Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Chelsea fan who sits near me laughs like a schoolgirl when he hears the name Chris Sutton.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Barmby played better for England than he has for any club (except Spurs) - the disappointment was that he was unable to settle after leaving Spurs and this effectively killed/ebbed a more successful international career

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

looking ahead, Sweden lost to Albania last night, and it really is high time England beat them...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Chelsea are all schoolgirls anyway. Girls who like cars and russian money. And they also hate him because Chelsea are secret huns. This is a documented fact.

He's a farmer's boy alright. Strapping thighs, all the better for holding defenders off.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The chief effect of Moyes playing Rooney from the start in more matches this season has been his bookings come in the first half rather than the second.

Actually, he's been mostly superb since Christmas, something which isn't evident in Everton's results. I don't think he should be starting for England. Give Beattie another chance.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The important talking point we are missing here is why Scott Parker failed to even make the squad this time around. Is that him ruled out of the tournament next summer, then?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently his move has "unsettled" him.

chris (chris), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Pepsi ordered the FA to ban him, as they are the official sponsors of Euro 2004, and his Coca-cola past would drown their message.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

9.15pm kick offs are not the way forward. Especially with Figo pressie giving ceremonies beforehand.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

they kick off at 9 in Portugal usually tho don't they?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm amazed at how, in a 76-post thread, I disagree with almost nothing that anyone has said. Jones, the Nipper, DC, Markelby, they've all been on the money, even if in different denominations.

Ireland deserve great credit for their show last night. So much better than England's.

Perhaps the Vicar blessed the pitch beforehand?

the finefox, Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

What I enjoyed most was an Irish coach or something on the radio beforehand referring to Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo as 'baldy fellas'.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't think the ireland game was that great a match, although i was watching it in fairly terrible conditions...
i was very disappointed with keane and morrison's misses, but i still think keane is a great player...
his form fluctuates a bit,but he's been playing really well for spurs, even if his finishing is better from outside the box than in...
we do need more upfront though...miller will hopefully be a good addition to the squad, but as far as i can see (and i've only seen him in a few highlights programs) hes not an out and out striker...

andy reid does look great, his passing was even better in his debut...
he has a nice line in incisive dinks which drift over the defence and find robbie keane's feet...could be a good combination...

robin (robin), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
He's going to start against France!

Ledley, please don't fail me now...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

ph34r!!!!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

bums.

PH34R though anyway...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

really gutted about Terry

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

This will make or break him (received football wisdom to thread)

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Its still preferable to Thierry Henry running past an out-of-position Jamie Carragher who then promptly falls flat on his arse. I'd start with King purely on the basis of his pace.

But yeah, fucking hell Terry sort yer knee out. Bugger Beckham's metatarsal, this is the most stressful week in England fitness history.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Desailly is apparently injured which could work in France's favour.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Crikey. I suppose given a fit and available squad, L. King would be fifth choice? (Campbell, Ferdinand, Southgate, Terry, King)

Wonder what the odds on LK scoring first are?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Sixth choice, you forgot Jonathan Woodgate.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes! I'm not sure why poor old Ugo dropped out of the reckoning, I always liked him.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Does this mean France will now be playing Gallas and Thuram at centre back? Bugger.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, that's what will prob happen. I thought it was gonna be a draw but now I'm not so sure.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, I forgot about Silvestre. *breaths sigh of relief*

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Farrar last night said it's be almost certainly gallas and Thuram

chris (chris), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

This Terry news is officially harshing my England buzz.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

DB, think of it this way: if we lose to France but still progress, then meet France again in the knockout stages, we can persuade ourselves that we have a better chance because we'll be at full strength.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

England wouldn't meet France again until the final would they?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

All the better.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Our French student work experience guy, amusingly named Ben0it Cocq, has been crowing on and on about the French team for the past month, with increasing fervour. We cannot lose to France otherwise I will not be able to come into work for a whole week.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

you could just punch him in the mouth, that'd shut him up...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 10 June 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Back at noomeeja ltd. we had a French lad in on EBS work exp. and one day he just started sending company-wide e-mails around goading us about our poor English team and boasting about his World and European champions. On the day of the England v Spain thread he predicted a sound beating for the English and I engaged him in some friendly sparring while others egged me on, all by group e-mail! England won the match 3-0 and I think that was the last of the digs from the guy, who I never actually met or spoke to in person the whole time!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 10 June 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve's story reminds me of the the time just before the England Argentina game when for some reason the whole of the Guardian's Fiver list fucked and became one massive group email with thousands of people on it. My friend and workmate Gareth responded to the first email with "stop emailing the whole word, you fool" and all hell broke loose - hundreds of emails from random menks flying left right and centre.

Then when England won they were all reading along the lines of "FUCKING C'MON!" It was great.
