My asshole landlord sent me a notice saying they would not renew my lease

I wasn't going to renew my lease anyway, but I wonder if their sending me this notice so soon after I filed a report about them with regulatory agencies would hold up under legal scrutiny. I'm not going to waste my time doing that, but I'm still pissed off. I gave them a lot of warning before going to L&I. This was the third year in a row I had to complain about the heat problem.

I really hate these people who have power over me because I don't have money. How stupid could I have been not to fully realize how important money is? Maybe more idealistic than stupid, but still. . . It feels as though virtually every major decision I've made in my life has been wrong.

What state are you in?

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

he sounds pretty upset.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

er, if you are in U.S. what state?

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Excuse me for knowing my rights as a tenant and being effective in pursuing them.

x-post: Pennsylvania. I don't want to make a legal issue out of this. I really was planning on moving out anyway, primarily because of the noise problem which has more to do with the acoustics here than it does to do with my downstairs neighbor, though he could be a lot more considerate.

Sorry. : (

Aja (aja), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG, haha, I just really hate every landlord I've ever dealt with (except maybe one).

x-post: Thanks.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

*kiss* rjg you are sooo cute winky winky
xpost

well rockist, i would suggest, if you are really pissed at them, make them do an eviction. then, at the 60 day mark, call them and offer to settle out of court if they will cease the action. sometimes they will actually GIVE you the money to move, because it is cheaper than paying their attorneys to evict you. how do I know? i used to be an apartment manager, and evicted people. when i liked the tenants, i told them what to do, and they got 2 months rent free by doing this, and sometimes money sometimes not. this was in CA, but every State has the requirement that eviction be a legal process, which means attorney fees for the landlord.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only known nice landlords.

We don't have one any more though

Aja (aja), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

did he disappear in mysterious circumstances?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't live in an appartment any more

Aja (aja), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

people rent houses too

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I live in a rent free loft.

Well not exactly. My grandma bought the place and I guess my mom is paying rent. But it's to my grandma

Aja (aja), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It's too much hassle, really. I need to focus on finding a place and moving. I already have a building picked out, I just need to go and actually look at it and see if there are any available apartments.

Now I feel that I am letting everyone down by not being venegeful enough. But nah, it's not worth the anxiety.

Aja, that's really not an option for me. I'm not going to live in a row-house/brownstone turned into apartments any more because that has been a big disaster when it comes to noise.

Yeah, I could rent a house, but I think it would be too expensive paying for utilities. I could find a house to rent for about as much as one of the apartments I'm considering, but the added utlity cost would probably do me in.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

And I don't want to share a place. I am way too curmudgeonly now. Unless it's a serious girlfriend or wife, forget it.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I live near Rittenhouse Square, why can't I find any rich women to support me?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

We don't pay for utilities

Aja (aja), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice picture.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The noise isn't that much of a problem. You can't hear anything through the floor down to the unit beneath you. You can hear a bit throught the walls though

Aja (aja), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(Except that snow looks gross.)

Aja, well I don't think I can get away with not paying for utilities, unless I moved to West Philadelphia and live with anarchist squatters, but that's really not my kind of thing.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll bet you don't pay for anything, Aja.

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

In our situation, we paid one large amount for the place and all the utilities are covered. We have two bathrooms and each unit has their own washer and dryer.

I don't pay any thing, no.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(RJG, I don't know if you were making fun of me or sympathizing, but you still made me laugh.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 19 February 2004 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't let your anger lead you to make decisions that end up hurting you more than they hurt the other party. The eviction scheme is interesting but more interesting is having a really clean credit history. You may want to buy a house some day, even if you can't imagine it now. Not to mention a car, or get your utilities turned on without leaving a deposit. Seek the lord Buddha's divine retribution through other channels. Like character assassination, or molotov cocktails.

Skottie, Thursday, 19 February 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally missed the word landlord in this title thread. Where's that damned misread titles thread?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 19 February 2004 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I can totally sympathise, we've just been served notice on our rented house after struggling with a landlord who has bodged every job we've ever asked him to! Hope it all works out for you.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 19 February 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Something fun to do to landlords who are less than perfect and cause you inconvenience:

Fuck up THEIR credit scoring! When you are in your new place, ring IRS/Inland Revenue. Explain that you think your ex-landlord may not be paying fair share of tax if at all, be ready to give name and address. Let the taxman do the rest.
