Do you do a good job?

I hope this doesn't get boring.
I recently, came into some money and ordered a computer based recording system. Protools, new custom built computer, and midi equiped keyboard, all from different sources. With ALL 3 there has been some kind of mistake leading to a delay or a big hassle.
The Protools supplier offered me a free $32 book for buying some extras from him.(foreshadowing) He then called me last week to say that Digidesign had some defective parts and they were overnighting a replacement to my retailer, so the retailer upgraded my shipping to get the order to me on time. Last night I received an email with my invoice and I had been charged for the $32 book, that I had never heard of, requested, and would not be getting if it hadn't been a "gift".
So I called my Sales guy and read him the riot act via voicemail. When he returned my call he explained that he had discounted the Protools to hide the cost of the book, but he "forgot" to explain this in the invoice. He then took issue with my tone and said he had done me a favor by holding up my shipment in order to relace the defective part.
To wrap up, did he "do me a favor" by selling me a non-defective part and did I have a right to "take a tone"?
I think I did, and my point is... Do you do a good job or do you slack and then make excuses?

Why are you using ProTools you idiot? Sorry.

This is JUST what I needed ;) Do you really think I fucked up?
Back to subject, in the summer my job as a bike mechanic is really important. If I fuck up, someone could get seriously hurt. But, in the winter, I bus tables. But I still try to do a good job. It's unimportant, and I hate it, and I really would rather stay home...I even don't need the money right now, but I still try to do my best. How could this guy fuck up and then give me attitude?

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Thursday, 19 February 2004 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

No Speedy, I was just kidding.

I say, he gave you attitude _because_ he fucked up. He's on the defensive, worried about his job if the boss starts to see him as incompetent perhaps. So he gets aggressive because he feels he's being threatened, exposed, and undermined.

That's what I think, but my real question is.. why do sooo many people just slack. As I stated 3 out of 3 retailers made mistakes that led to big delays. Why the fuck do you do a BAD job? Everyone of these could have been avoided with just a little attention. I just wanted to to say "Fuck you! You deserve to be yelled at! Get your shit together!"

Not very bright, just new to the job and still confused, underpaid and doesn't wan to be there, that kind of thing maybe....?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 19 February 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I may be setting up a plot for a Gen X slacker movie here.

Speedy, tone or no tone, if a promised 'free' thing shows up with a price on an invoice, you've every right to query it.

However you shoot your wad if you come out of the starting gate with a 'tone', because although you may be entitled to be cross, the sales person will harp on your attitude. I'd have been all 'I'm sorry, maybe I should discuss my tone with your manager and see if he feels I'm in any way out of line.'

Right now I do not do a good job, I think. I'm two months into my new job at a law firm, and I can feel myself screwing up left and right. This is because of my inexperience in this atmosphere, though, and not because I've been slacking.

sorry I swear I'm just here while I eat second breakfast, I'll disconnect the plug in just a bit really.

To make a long story short, I live in a town where it snows for 6 months out of the year so being a bike mechanic only gets me through 2 seasons. I have worked at the ski resort for 6 years but this season, being my last before moving to warmer clime, I thought I would work very little and ski a lot. But I still need some income.
I still wish that I could hit on what I feel about the way people seem to do their jobs these days. Maybe it is the impersonal way that the internet has taken over retali for example. Maybe you don't feel as obligated to someone when they can't see your face.

I do quite a good job at the moment - I'm new to it, only 4 weeks, and I am totally concerned about making a good impression. I'm not so bothered about honest fuck-ups - it's the ones that happen because I don't concentrate, or don't give to a task properly, that depress me.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I work really hard at every job I do, even if it is crap like the one I'm doing at the moment. If someone is paying me to do something, I will do it. I have worked with and come across all manner of idiots, from slackers to downright numpties, and I just want to slap them. Anyone who doesn't take pride in what they do, and do it well, doesn't deserve to have a job.

(I have turned into a grumpy old curmudgeon in the last few weeks since quitting my job in a fit of undervaluedness. please excuse me, or give me a decent job)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I often have alot of time to do a good job, or at least a very close impression to a good job. It's all a question of often having a lot of time to get things done properly. Basically, the only part of my job where I get to shine is running literature searches and tracking down obscure references.
