s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

so far in my (tentative) cart:

rules of the game criterion
cronopios and famas by julio cortazar
the art of poetry 4-cd set by borges (lectures by him)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

amazon brings out the high-falutin' in me!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

tom what the heck is that?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, I think it's a bunch of brass band covers of the music from Nintendo games. I'll find out before too long, I guess, I ordered it used.

The other one is like the best D&B comp ever.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

brass band covers of nintendo music??!?! holy heck

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, the concept is irresistible!!

TOMBOT, Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

it's very tempting. but maybe I'll wait to hear what you have to say about it!

(I wonder if Jordan knows about this...)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

s1ocki, the Wisconsin Death Trip DVD is out on Monday and WELL worth it even at $24.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yes! yes! to wisconsin death trip, and yes! to cronopios & famas, as well - it's fantastic.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm really psyched about the latter (and possibly about the former)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(I wonder if Jordan knows about this...)

I BLOODY WELL DO NOW.

This will either be the best or the worst thing ever, please let us know Tom.

I just spent about $80 in the last few days on klezmer cd's and James Salter books. The Chappelle dvd's are soon to fall into my clutches as well.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope it's a serbian brass band!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

also considering

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I've thought about suggesting similar things for my brass band, but that would cross over into novelty ska band territory.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that is a dangerous road to take.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Cronopios and Famas is excellent. I feel like I've heard a track or two of that brass band Nintendo thing but it was a while ago so maybe it was something different. Whatever it was, it made good novelty.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

well it looks like the cronopios decision is SOLIDIFIED!

Mr Predictable (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to read that too, I loved Blow Up + Other Stories.

Also, an essential:

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

nice review dan.

I reccomend maps, they're educational and interesting and then you can frame them and put them on your wall.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I have these.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! yeah maps rule!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

If it were me, I'd put that money towards this:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008OM70/103-0125988-9520640?v=glance

But you'd still have to spend quite a bit of money.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd order this:

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that you should consider contributing that fifty dollars to a greater cause. However, your donation may be refused if you happen to be a commie pinko "progressive" in-ter-net user.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

both excellent suggestions, diablo & spencer. this is getting harder.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't get too much out of Blow Up et al., which seemed a bit too "short storyish" for my tastes, though they were fine. But C&F is something altogether different.

Apparently you can get Atkins smores bars for dirt cheap today, I say go for it!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 19 February 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

nice review dan.

:-)

Evil Thoughts: 22 Postcards by David Shrigley

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also thinking about getting the gospel according to jesus christ - jose saramago. thoughts?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 20 February 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

no! maps maps maps!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 20 February 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

if they had a montreal version of that thing I'd be all up in it like crazy!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 20 February 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I love maps. I would say that a good map is nearly erotic except "nearly" is kinda wishywashy and can be easily seen through.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 21 February 2004 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually the mario zelda thing isn't bad!!! Too much stuff I don't recognize, but each of the first games in the series gets its own medley rework, with concert-hall handclapping and everything. Also blues guitar solo takes of some stuff (?!?!?!) and general purpose kitchen-sink nipponese bizarro arrangements. If I had to complain it would be that the drummer isn't quite Buddy Rich, but then who is, besides Buddy Rich and that one other guy? They do one version of the Mario main theme that has LYRICS! In Japanese. It reminds me a little of Pizzicato Five.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! do they do the mario invincibility theme (one of my favourite songs)?

if so can you mp3 it and stuff?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

in other news i'm still waffling on what to buy.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah it's in a couple of the medley arrangements. They only have a few themes that they cover all by themselves. do I have you on AIM? hit me at my handle if you have it and I'll like make you a mix CD or summat with a bunch of other silly junk.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

that would be totally wicked! what's your aim name again?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

buy the nuggets 2 box!!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

that's tempting! but I never listen to the nuggets 1 box enough, or my harry smith box, they're the only two I have and I gotta say they make me feel guilty enough.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

fourteen years pass...

Hugely boring question but does anyone know if you can buy gift cards for Amazon Mexico online, as opposed to getting them in store at Oxxo or 7-Eleven, etc?
