New York London Reykjavik Seattle, Everybody talkin' bout... Plane Travel

.. or more specifically travel agents. My big ambitious travel plans this coming June (probably mid to late June if possible) is to fly to New York for a couple of days, then London for about four, then Iceland for about three to four, then back to Seattle.

I figure something like this would be best handled by a good travel agent. Unfortunately, I've never talked to a travel agent before, and have no clue who are the "good" ones or "bad" ones, if such exist. And I have no clue what cost difference there is in planning such a hoppity-hop trip as opposed to Seattle-New York, Seattle-London, or Seattle-Iceland round trip travel. Or just any plane travel plans more complicated than just going to some page online, and ordering an e-ticket for a round trip ticket.

HELP!

Generally speaking I've done just fine with the online services these days, and the travel agent who I relied on in the past -- mother of a friend of mine -- I've not really talked to about travel for a couple of years.

(As for cost difference, my experience is breaking up the trip into miniature hops like that can be more expensive than a round trip -- trying to remember if it's ever been cheaper for me in those situations and so far, it hasn't, but others probably have more to say.

Oh, and I'm jealous and I hate you, there.)

hmmmm, well if the consensus is that a series of round trips is cheaper, I might just do that instead. I'm not working all the months of April, May, and June, so perhaps I should just do these week-by-week?

(Hey, I've been working 70 hrs/week for a while here, and when March ends, I will be indignantly happy and will be motherfucking deserving it, goddammit)

Well wait, if you phrase it THAT way, it might not be (I didn't quite grasp that was your plan). And prices are always in flux. There are a couple of cheap travel site threads on ILE, I'd scrounge the archives for links to various locales.

you can fly jet blue roundtrip from seattle to NYC for like $275 in summer... and then get an Icelandair flight from NYC to Heathrow with a free stopover in Reykjavik. They probably still give free stopovers, they used to. that way you only have to buy two tickets.

Phil comes through! I should have guessed he would be the expert. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i looked into it and the cheapest was a mon-thurs june departure from new york, free stopover in iceland, and return on mon-thurs. $350 + tax. but tax in heathrow is a beeyatch so it'll prolly be like $125 for tax. zoinks thats cheap. but there might not be any availability left.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

phil is so right. the icelandair stopover plan rules, and if you book ahead then you'll be able to get a good rate on jet blue (which is cheap, anyhow). in addition to their low prices, they're both great airlines to fly.

Hurrah! :-) DB will have himself a time of goodness.

my travel bug is starting to flare up again. theres this crazy deal on delta/american where if you fly twice in the next 2 months from NYC or Boston to either california or florida, you get a free ticket anywhere in the world they fly. so im already doing to california in march, so maybe i go to miami or orlando for $200, then get a free ticket to Istanbul or Bombay or Bogota!

also, i bet that Icelandair has really HOTT flight attendants

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now I'm trying to find cheaper connections to Caracas in July than those I've found already -- and they're ridiculously expensive for some reason.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

omg, hot german/venezuelans. mmmmm

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

why are you going to caracas?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 19 February 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Partly for the hell of it (never been to South America yet!) partly because a friend's invited me over so why not? But I'm not yet sure if I'm going to be able to go, I have to factor in a slew of other costs and I am dead set against using my credit card for anything.

Right now the more urgent and key trip is Portland in May. Yay Tape Mountain/Minor Thirds/my cousin and his family visiting goodness!
