The hobo used to be common in popular culture. The European love of the bohemian wanderer, Jimmie Roger's lonesome railroad songs... Otis on The Andy Griffith Show. Featured regularly on Hee Haw and The Grand Ole Opry... John Hartford's Gentle On My Mind was a minor hit for Glen Campbell. Kindly hobos stole pies off windowsills in Norman Rockwell paintings.

Hobos and bums were everywhere! Now we're afraid of them. They're evil "drifters", homeless wanderers coming to take our blonde daughters away.
