The Pow Wow Water Fiasco

This mornign I (along with everyone else in the library)received this email from the library secretary, shortly after going to fill my bottle at the water-cooler (three stories up!) and finding it, um, not there...

"Much to the surprise of everyone, the water cooler in the Staff Room has been removed. Pow Wow Water has been taken over by Nestle and it is University policy not to deal with that company. As admirable as that is, it is rather unfortunate that the University failed to inform us before they cancelled all the contracts. [deputy librarian] is checking out new suppliers."

Haven't Nestlé now 'made amends', or at least altered their policy regarding this whole affair (which was about dried milk and African mothers, or something?- I forget, as usual, being unethical), so isn't it rather ludicrous to be still boycotting them now that the desired affect has been achieved?

Also, what sweets/other products do Nestlé make that I might possibly find in the campus shop?

Plainly a cover story for a Garth Marenghi's Darkplace-themed prank.

NERQ (Enrique), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

OK. That went over my head.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You prolly have a life or whatever. Twas a ref to last night's television.

NERQ (Enrique), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Darth Marenghi" would totally be a cool star wars villian...

I doubt you will be able to find any Nestle things in the University - they are typically very thorough with this nonsense.

It is the unfortunate result of students getting political about something now and then. Even if Nestle has changed its practices, you would need to get a quorum attendence at a certain committee at a certain time to remove it.

Which, quite frankly, is pissing in the wind.

Ah. I watched Badlands and the Michel Gondry DVD last night. I don't have an aerial.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I want that fuckin DVD. Jesus, why did God invent captalism?

NERQ (Enrique), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i think there was a whole thread about nestle and if they are really that evil and whatever.

but i'm too lazy to find it. sorry...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The Gondry DVD is absolutely fucking mind-boggling. The menu screen alone is worth £18. There are kids in his drum kit! And they yelp when he does a fill!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

they're his kids aren't they?

they showed a lot of it on MTV before Xmas

chris (chris), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

His kids? Even better!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Do ze washing up, you 'orrible leetle brat!"

"Non!"

"Zen I shall use you az a drum again!"

"Non! Papa I love you!"

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have MTV either. I am poor. I want the DVD but yer man Gondry is a dick. I'm going for Jonze first. Actually, I'm going for Herzog's 'Nosferatu' first...

27 January 03, World Bank Press Review
Nestle SA reached an agreement with Ethiopia to settle a 27-year-old compensation claim, ending an embarrassing fight in which the company blundered into being depicted as squeezing money out of one of the world's poorest countries, the Wall Street Journal Europe also reports. Nestle, with annual revenue of more than $65 billion, agreed to drop its claim for $6 million in damages stemming from the 1975 nationalization of a livestock business and to accept an offer of $1.5 million. It promised immediately to hand the proceeds over to famine-relief efforts in Ethiopia.

I still won't buy Nestle though, because the way they scrambled to drop the debt only after the negative publicity started was a bit sickening.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

BUT I MISS KIT KATS!

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

What? Like other chocolate manufacturers are innately ethical? Surely that was the point of the campaign, to get them to drop the debt by getting them adverse publicity?

NERQ (Enrique), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Nosferatu at work, so I borrowed it about two weeks ago...

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

That was the point of the campaign, yes - but they shouldn't have pursued the debt in the first place.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ach, that's capitalism.

I have this thing with DVDs/Vids: the ones I can have for free, and the things I tape, I don't want. They can wait. It's stupid.

NERQ (Enrique), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't it.
