Belief is intrinsic to religion, i.e. by implication, belief is more important than reason and conclusion. Thinking they believe, therefore, applies to the situation "Here are presents, no "From" name indicated, pictures of Santa, therefore these are from santa, therefore he exists."
So, they think they believe, but actually they have been told in a roundabout method, with red herrings and circumstancial evidence.
