Archie Comics: Classic or Dud?

I spent the past week under a maple tree reading aloud Archie comics with a friend. I think they're super, second only to Bushmiller's "Nancy". What is your opinion on Archie? Betty v. Veronica? The enigmatic Jughead? Has anyone read any of the very, very Christian Archie comics (i.e. "Archie: ONE WAY)?

Nevermind Archie, Here's Cherry Poptart!

Is 1 1 2 3 5 the start of the fibonacci series?

just asking, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sequence, not series.

Best Archie Christian Comic = 'Little Hansi, the Girl Who Loved the Swastika" (before she found Jesus, natch). In the intro to an Archie collection, Stephen King suggests that you can tell a lot about a person from whether they prefer Betty or Veronica.

Best polarity - The Archies vs the Three-Tones. The Three-Tones sabotaged the Archies' gear, but ended up getting thrown off a pier.

I used to not like Veronica. But both her and Betty are so hot.

Jughead is cool too.

Archie is a twat, though.

I didn't want to be responsible for killing your innocence, but what the hell. That link is not for those in sensitive work environments.

Lots of nice cartooning by Dan DeCarlo. Also, a strange moment in my life: I was with one of my best friends, a very brilliant man, on the tube and he was reading a Betty & Veronica, and I was reading over his shoulder. At some point I jokingly said something to the effect of "Come on, turn the page!" He snapped it closed and said "You can't have read that yet - I'm only halfway down the first page." I had, I insisted. "Well you can't retain any of it - tell me what happens." I proceeded to describe every panel and recite an approximation of all the dialogue. He said it changed his view of the world. It made me realise that I was a more swift and efficient reader than I'd realised.

This is so stupid.

The zombie Archie series is actually good!

I really like the Alex Ross cover, even if it is Ross-by-numbers.

i've only been vaguely aware of archie, thought it was some weird "leave it to beaver" type relic. had no idea it was so freakin horny. so many lovingly outlined and shaded boobs and insanely perky butts. a gift to teenage boys and queer girls apparently, from comments on the "no context archie" instagram account. the gender politics are crazy and hilarious. kinda reads like a camp softcore horny teenage fever dream. seems wild what they got away with (like that bukkake scene that scott posted ... 10 years ago. time flies when you're covered in fluids.

Dan DeCarlo, the greatest of all the old school Archie comic book artists, drew lots of 'sexy' cartoons and cheesecake pin-ups for more adult orientated markets:

Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder's 'Starchie' parody from Mad issue 12 gets precisely the comic's barely repressed erotic 'teenage fever dream' quality ("I can't help it! They're drawn so gosh darned cute!!'):

As a kid I found a couple of issues of Archie-parody porn comic Cherry Poptart - the style was close enough I can't believe there wasn't a successful lawsuit.

Having to prove that Dan DeCarlo’s personal drawing style was something they owned would have been harder in court than simply claiming that Goldwater invented, say, a character who looked like and was named after DeCarlo’s wife.

And the story Vampironica did disappear from reprints of #1 between 1982 and 2020 tbf.
