Better than Rushmore, Election or American Beauty & it deserves its own thread.

"They'll never catch me. Why? Because I'm fucking innocent."

fritz, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

a near-perfect film, beautiful. it always reminds me of slacker though, i think it's the texas thing, and that linklater looks a lot like owen wilson. i'll start with the quotes once everyone else does.

ethan, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bottle Rocket is filth, I fucking hate it, it's even worse than Slacker. It and Freeway 2 are in all probability the two worst movies of the last ten years. I can't believe that Anderson fuckface was allowed to make another movie. If From Hell wasn't coming out this weekend, I'd be totally disillusioned with Hollywood.

Wheeler, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

filth? really?

fritz, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Positive filth. I can't really engage in a critical analysis of it though, because all I remember is that when I watched it all I could think about was the all encompassing revulsion it made feel and how much I wanted to turn it off. And how much I hated all the characters. And how much I hate the way the Wilson brothers speak. And how I didn't find any of it slightly humorous.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has everyone already discussed the Royal Tannenbaums?

marianna, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I tried to... no one has seen it except for me, apparently.

And Bottle Rocket is nowhere NEAR as good as Rushmore.

JM, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Try heah

JM, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Royal Tennenbaums is out already?

fritz, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nope. NY Film Festival only. Release is Dec 22.

JM, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rushmore is way better, I'd say I agree with Wheeler but he hates Rushmore too, the freak.

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Owen Wilson was great in Zoolander.

Kris, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought you were talking about those rockets you can make out of a litre soft drink bottle filled with water, and a pump. They deserve their own thread!

Bill, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blue Steel!

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That Hansel, he's so hot right now.

Could Otis be jealous of that Owen Wilson? The man's a WRITER, too - god damn, he's like that Affleck guy, but with a better nose!

Owen Wilson + almost any movie = success. I think Anaconda, and some other flick, fail to balance that equation. Otherwise, though, it's foolproof.

David Raposa, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jimmy - give us a full royal tannenbaums review then...

fritz, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rushmore is better, more assured, but this is the film that made me want to own a jumpsuit.

scott p., Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me jealous of Owen Wilson, pshaw, how 'bout the other way around. I'm a better writer than him AND I can speak like a normal person. The guy hardly deserves to share my initials. Owen Wilson + movie != success, see Cable Guy, Armageddon, the Haunting, the Minus Man, Meet the Parents, and oh, every other movie he's made except Permanent Midnight and Zoolander.

Otis Wheeler, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Meet the Parents is fantastic, especially if you realize that that's going to be Ramon in November, Wheeler. "You tried to milk him, didn't you, you sick son of a bitch!"

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The person who originally did the script for Meet the Parents (or was going to direct it, I'm not sure), was complaining about how they butchered it, and the way he had it was that in the end everybody died. The thought of which, in the context of the released film, amuses me deeply.

David, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had the initial thoughts on The Royal Tenenbaums on

JM, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah I used to like Owen C. Wilson too until I realized that he's not actually an actor. His appearance on the Jon Stewart show last week confirmed it. He acted like he was all too cool for Jon Stewart. No one is too cool for Jon Stewart.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three years pass...
I just found out Owen Wilson is older than Luke Wilson. How is this possible? Owen gives off such a little brother vibe, and Luke seems exactly like an oldest sibling. It is very strange.

You know, what's funniest to me about this thread is that I know for a fact that Otis Wheeler enjoyed the film Bottle Rocket.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Saturday, 13 November 2004 01:38 (twenty years ago)

sixteen years pass...

A fantastic movie about enablers.

treeship., Thursday, 1 July 2021 00:22 (four years ago)

James Caan is hilarious and terrifying. Owen Wilson represents the violence of quixotic dreamers—the cost, to others, of refusing to live in the real world.

treeship., Thursday, 1 July 2021 00:24 (four years ago)

Also it’s funny. It’s amazing how much of Anderson’s early style was already present here.

treeship., Thursday, 1 July 2021 00:26 (four years ago)

“They’ll never catch me, man. Cause I’m fucking innocent.”

treeship., Thursday, 1 July 2021 00:29 (four years ago)

why do the posts in this thread have a different typeface?

Dan S, Thursday, 1 July 2021 00:47 (four years ago)

Times New Roman.

treeship., Thursday, 1 July 2021 00:48 (four years ago)

Wish it was futura.

treeship., Thursday, 1 July 2021 00:49 (four years ago)

what is the default typeface on ilx? I like it better than this

Dan S, Thursday, 1 July 2021 00:55 (four years ago)

It depends on your browser but usually it is arial i think.

In the old days, the lurking days, i remember it being times new roman.
