What is 'male? What is 'female'?

I was reading this thread
Opposite Sex
(Opposit Sex) and it got me wondering.

What do you think the typically male and typically female traits are?
(Other than just physical).

What makes a man more manly, and a woman more feminine?

mei (mei), Sunday, 22 February 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Girls walk fancy.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Men sit with their legs as wide apart as possible.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 22 February 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Women do not smoke pipes. If would be good if they did.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 22 February 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

In psychometric tests, men tend to do better at spatial recognition tasks and women do better at language ones. I don't think that's as interesting as walking fancy, but that's science for you.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

space is a language.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 February 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

does the typical women are more emotional/men more rational line still hold any sway? or was that completely debunked by the women's movement?

j c (j c), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think men and women are irrational in different ways. Men get angry and commit violent street crimes much more than women, which seems a highly irrational thing to do, for example.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe no one's said it, so I'm obligated to: WOMEN BE SHOPPING.

NA (Nick A.), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

and emotional isn't necessarily the opposite of rational is it? you could be a very emotional person but still behave relatively rationally all the time. perhaps what people mean when they say that is really that women are typically more emotional and men typically more stoic (which is often interpreted as rational)? that theory seems to still be generally accepted today, at least in pop culture.

j c (j c), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree, though getting angry and hitting people in the street is emotional as well as irrational.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

You could attack people coldly and emotionlessly.

In the street.

the firefox, Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You could, but it doesn't seem to happen very often. Perhaps you'd like to start a trend.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

you seem to see women screaming hysterically at other people in the street more often then men though. maybe it's their aptitude for language.

j c (j c), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

than, sorry

j c (j c), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

You could attack them for rational reasons such as their hideous fucking shoes which are staring at you.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Men don't have uteruses, though.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's that an answer to?!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I just thought I'd throw it into the mix.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan to thread.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 February 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the real difference is that when men go to check their fingernails they do it all covert-like with their fingers curled up away from view, whereas women stretch out their fingers and hold their hand away from themselves to get the perfect distance for serious inspection.

j c (j c), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It's funny you should say that. When I was at school someone said 'Look at your fingernails' and I asked why and they said just do it so I did and I stretched them out and they said 'Ha ha - you're a girl'.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you cry?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I explored my sexual identity.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

And got a detention.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're gonna explore your sexual identity, don't do it in class.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"DASTOOR! Stop that this INSTANT! This is a time for MATHS!"

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"oh, you said 'maths debate'..."

sorry, guys, I blame nick southall.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I sold out.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is this 'Nick Southall' of whom you speak? His name is like mine... and yet... unlike...

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Onan to thread.

the blissfox, Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you type that one-handed?

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 22 February 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

He used his nose.

The last chromosone of a woman looks like this: XX
The last chromosome of a man looks like this: XY
The last chromosome of a hermaphrodite looks like...uh...do I wanna know?

natasha lushina, Sunday, 22 February 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"I shall call it... Maxi-Me."

Like I was really going to do a google image search for "hermaphrodite"! (Dan Pe, Sunday, 22 February 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The more I think about this question, the more bolloxed up I get. The one thing I can say for sure is that men are more biologically expendable, as individuals. It's the same reason why hunters are allowed to kill stags, but not does. It can be illuminating to examine the traditional gender roles in this light. But that's not what was being asked.

In electrical terms, 'male' couplers stick out and 'female' couplers recess. That about says it all.

Aimless (Aimless), Sunday, 22 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Like I was really going to do a google image search for "hermaphrodite"!

I'm sorta disappointed you didn't.

Kingfish Beatbox (Kingfish), Sunday, 22 February 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone wear CKOne anymore?

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i still have half a small bottle left over around here..

Kingfish Beatbox (Kingfish), Sunday, 22 February 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too - it was from a variety pack.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 22 February 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I still wear it, and CKBe (which I prefer). They're the only scents I have.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 23 February 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a spritz from the bathroom attendant on Saturday. I can't remember what it was. I think I told him it smelled "girly" but I didn't have the patience to look through the other options.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 23 February 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

e.g. androgyny via laziness.

"Why, 'musk,' of course."

"Very good, sir."
