Myself and Jarlrmai watched this last night. I thought it was fantastic. Any opinions? Any other Japanese horror musical recommendations? Does anyone know what the hell happened to the normal people who popped round for cake? Didn't that claymation guy at the start look like Douglas from the Lurpak adverts only really really wrong? And what was up with the fat lady hikers? Isn't it ace?

It's great!

And I hated Audition...

The fat lady hikers were on a religious pilgrimage, I'm pretty sure.

I loved the movie too. The handful of romance numbers were far better kitsch than anything in Moulin Rouge for sure.

Pochi!

I thought it was pretty disappointing.

Well below virtually all the other Miike I've seen, and not a patch on the excellent Korean movie it's based on, The Quiet Family.

two years pass...
i thought this was quite poor. some funny scenes but it was all over the place ( i know you can counter that by saying it's meant to be that way) i felt it didn't quite have the courage to go really wild, if anything i thought it was tame and a bit boring.

I liked when they rescued the claymation dog at the end.

I don't know, in retrospect, that I'd say I "loved" this one, but it is funny to me that my two favorite Miike films are the ones that are the most humorless (Dead or Alive 2: Birds) and the most unabashedly goofy (this one).
