"Some forecasters think that average U.S. gasoline prices will go above $2 a gallon over the summer and that the price in some areas may hit $3."

Yee-ouch.

For some sense of perspective, right now the national average is $1.64.

gas prices should be higher, especially in cities where there's so much public transportation available. they should use the extra profits to make heating oil cheaper so that people up north stop freezing to death whenever a cold front comes through.

j c (j c), Monday, 23 February 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh! Ooh! If this happens, BushCo will fall like a drunk in a ditch.

Aimless (Aimless), Monday, 23 February 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

We'll be reamed in the Bay Area... we have the refineries galore, but when the finished product is trucked off to Montana they drop the price about .60 cents a gallon. I haven't figured it out yet, either.

You do realize, however, that Dannon water costs more than gas, right? And it's not even spring water!

andy, Monday, 23 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Gas costs twice as much as it did twelve years ago and yet, I don't see the number of SUVs on the road decreasing. Hell, I'm seeing Hummers in grocery store parking lots. Someone is still making money. Maybe those Hummer drivers work for Shell.

In real terms or as just a reflection of inflation?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 February 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

$2.21 here Anthony, we (the California Bay Area) are right on your tail.

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The gap between Canadian and American gasoline prices is certainly closer than in the past...

But as far as rate of gas/petrol price increases vs. general inflation increases over the years, gas is relatively cheaper than it's ever been before.. or at least until 2002. I think last year was a weird stump back to more expensive gasoline prices, and if predictions are correct, this year will be "worse".

So, uh, yeah, if you know a good bus route to work, for all you car commuters, maybe now's the time to check them out.

As someone who enjoys road trips, I have no problems with higher gas prices if they indeed eventually make less people needlessly* drive in their daily routines.

* "needlessly" defined as "could use public transportation for driving to work instead with only slightly higher time inconveniences"

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's because i currently drive a car that i have to put about $30-40 into per week at $1.65

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

surely a bit of this is also the weak dollar?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 February 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I forget the details and can't find a link to the article, but the U.S. dollar shot dramatically up this past weekend for some reason due to a major shakedown in the Japan markets.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

we do have slightly bigger gallons ( and points in the UK though)

In real terms or as just a reflection of inflation?

All I know, Ned, is that in college I used to pay .85 to .95 a gallon. I can remember once paying SEVENTY-TWO CENTS a gallon in Rolla, Missouri. Any station selling it for over a dollar was just trying to rip you off.

Now, I'm lucky to find gas under $1.60. Good thing we elected all of those oil-friendly politicians.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I was warned of high gas prices when I first moved north.. since then, I've found the northwest U.S. to have the cheapest gas prices, on average, of the country second to the south. Washington slightly cheaper than Oregon (even with our stinkin' high sales tax), Oregon MUCH cheaper than California (thanks to their stinkin' LACK of a sales tax and friendly MANDATORY full service laws). I remember December 2002, I got gas in Olympia WA for 99 cents a gallon. Oh well.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

£3.20 per gallon here, mate.

That should go on the "Catchphrases that mean nothing to folks in the US"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

... thread.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

So in the UK petrol costs four times as much as in Oklahoma? Glad I don't have a car.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

If you don't have a car, petrol is the same price...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm an arsonist, so the price of petrol is important to me.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i am so so glad i wont be driving anymore in a week

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

would it be too, um, conspiratorial to note that most of the states where gas prices are relatively low are red states?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Red states? Explain.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Idaho is as "red" as they get (very odd redefinition of "red" there given its more historial definition in political contexts of past), and they're in the Top 10. I know you said most, but I think this case is just, you know, more of a regional phenonenon than a political one, eisbar. So yes, I think you are being too conspiratorial.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if there's any relationship between high gas prices and Exxon's record profits?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

okay get this: I was on my utterly worthless corporate conference call with a bunch of other radio stations, and one was talking about how they did like a 98c gas promotion and people were lined up to get the cheap gas. AND THEY WERE RUNNING THEIR ENGINE AND THEIR AIR CONDITIONER IN ORDER TO BURN GAS SO THAT THEY COULD FIT MORE CHEAP GAS IN THEIR TANK.
