It's something to do with the Welsh.

Congrationalists? Go round shaking hands saying "Well done, well done"?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Congregationists combined with the Presbyterians to become the United Reformed Church, but only in England. I think in the other British nations they remained separate.

You know, I was raised Congregationalist (they're "descended" from the Pilgrims, which is why there are so many Congregationalist churches in New England), and it wasn't until very recently, while looking at this page that I found out that official Congregationalist doctrine doesn't accept the virgin birth.

My experience was that it was virtually indistinguishable from any other church where you go in, hear a scriptural reading, stand up, sing a hymn, sit down, pass the plate, stand up, sing a hymn, sit down, hear a scriptural reading and a sermon, stand up, and go. Nearly every sermon focused on charity and good works; very few of them (I started counting at one point) ever mentioned Jesus, and sometimes didn't mention God, either.

Lots of pot-luck dinners and tag sales.

But that was just one church; I'm not much up on Protestant denominations.

for some reason i pegged you as one of those.

Congregationalists rule, Methodists drool!

Congregationalists used to believe in predestination, but not anymore. Now we're like the next step above Unitarianism.

Oh dear. I don't know if that's good :)

It might explain why I'm not very interested in ritual, but by the same token, I'm not very interested in community. Doctrinally I'm not sure where I'd be put.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

are you interested in hugs ?
(there is this huge schism in my parish about touching, like do we hold hands at the lords prayer, do we hug at passing of the peace.

(are methodists/congrationalists(sp) related ?
is there some kind of flow chart ?

Though I was baptized a Presbyterian, I attended Methodist church later on (my Dad remarried...)... it was pretty moderate. No clapping in church, obviously. They had a harpsichord in the sanctuary. I think there was a folk guitar now and then, and not too much talk about Jesus, and I don't think they ever mentioned Mary except at Christmas. Pretty low key, all in all.

I went to a Congregationalist chruch, good times, our young liberal minister let the youth group watch THE BREAKFAST CLUB and we used to celebrate Passover!

Methodism came out of the C of E via John Wesley. My brother is a Methodist. They seem to be very community-oriented. Historically, they've been heavily involved in reform movements.

Wouldn't be crazy about hugging. But religion in any kind of non-academic sense is such a private thing for me that even being at church is a pretty unlikely proposition.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Congregational church across the street from me is pretty liberal, it kind of reminds me of Unitarianism only with the big difference that it's Christian. The one I went to as a kid was much more formal and and less political though.

eleven years pass...

But that would seem to ignore that Oord was threatened with a “heresy trial” in the summer of 2014, and that:

In 2013, [ NNU President David ] Alexander and Intermountain District Superintendent Dr. Stephen Borger asked Dr. Tom Oord to respond to 70 questions about his theology–-in order to stay in good standing with the church and the university… He wrote an 80 page paper in response to these questions, and after being interviewed by Nazarene theologians… Dr. Oord’s thoughts were found to be within the limits of Wesleyan theology.

damn wesleyan theology turnin the thumbscrews
