Anglicans in boring food shocka!

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Pancakes -- maybe I'll have some tomorrow, that sounds like a great idea!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

we have gin too huck, you should come.

anthony, Monday, 23 February 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

pancakes are actually pretty good. I like 'em fine.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I would come if I could and stuff myself with pancakes and rum to make up for missing mardi gras.

You know, and 'cause i like pancakes and anthony.

Though not necessarily at the same time.

That sounds so wrong.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Syrup?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

With pancakes or Anthony?

luna (luna.c), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone knows that potato pancakes are better... possibly the greatest swedish dish.

andy, Monday, 23 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I am with you in spirit anthony!

I may go buy some of these today:

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I had some of those this weekend! They don't do King Cake here, obviously (although I had one delivered for an obscene amount of money), but they do those.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

you can buy king cakes at some of the grocery stores here in my neck of the midwest!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Not here -- no one's even heard of em. The Bloomington paper actually interviewed me about Mardi Gras, as I guess the closest thing to a local Creole.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

What's a "king cake"?

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

See? :)

It's like a coffee cake, usually with cinnamon, generally elliptical, decorated with purple, gold, and green icing or colored sugar (the colors of Mardi Gras). Served only from Twelfth Night through Mardi Gras, although tourism has broken that tradition somewhat (the Court of Two Sisters included it in their Thanksgiving brunch, which is like serving eggnog in July). There's a baby -- plastic now, usually -- hidden in the cake, and whoever finds it in their piece has good luck for the year and is responsible for buying the next cake.

the dunedin central lite music club are having a special pancake meeting tonight (it is shrove tuesday here already). our lite music will be george michael, pete shelley, frankie goes to hollywood and the pet shop boys.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 23 February 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

That cake looks like it was made with unicorn meat or something. So colorful, so enchanting.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 23 February 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

they're huge too, like two feet by one foot. They're very good if there's not too much icing on them.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 February 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

it would make a great halo.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 23 February 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm jewish, am i allowed to eat pancakes too?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 23 February 2004 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Dunedin club thing sounds wondrous!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 February 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Now imagine those colors strung up in Christmas lights all over the city, and banners and flags everywhere, and constant parades, and everyone in masks or full costume, and grok the level of my current homesickness :)

(It's kind of like having moved somewhere where people don't celebrate Christmas and are only vaguely aware of it; but not quite that deep.)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 23 February 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i invited two jews, a hindu,a jain, a muslim and three atheists.

the jews might be coming.

anthony, Monday, 23 February 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

okay I went looking for king cakes in Brooklyn and yeah they're hard to find. Two Boots seems to be doing a Fat Tuesday thing:

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 February 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Cajun martinis!

Wooooo-eee!

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 23 February 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I am deep in a serious missing Mardi Gras funk.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 23 February 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Mardigras.com has live cams, I think, and the parades are usually broadcast on the Travel Channel (although everyone will be at work).

A friend of mine is hopefully going to tape them for me locally; I'm weirded out by the idea of seeing them on the Travel Channel, without the local reporters I'm used to and everything, like watching your family's home movies presented as part of an undergraduate anthropology course.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 23 February 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Mardigras.com has live cams, I think, and the parades are usually broadcast on the Travel Channel

It's not the same. If I can't show my tits, and drink hurricanes 'til I puke red, it's not Mardi Gras.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 23 February 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The Washington Post this weekend had a recipe for king cakes (and a roundup of where to buy them locally). But instead I think I'll try to have crepes tomorrow.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

What the hell is shrove? I've never heard that word before in my life.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I've sorta heard of "Shrove Tuesday", but it's not done around these parts. I suppose it's the proximity we have to LA or something, but tomorrow = "Mardi Gras" over here. Or "Fat Tuesday". Or "hey folks, this is the last opportunity to get in whatever you're going to give up for Lent!" day. Wednesday and Fridays from here until Easter Sunday will be quite challenging for me, food-wise. Not that many seafood dining establishments around here that are casual and inexpensive, and I'm burned out on tuna fish. Hm.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Happy Shrove Tuesday to anyone celebrating it, happy Mardi Gras to me!

(Sean, Shrove Tuesday's another name for the day before Lent, and where it's called that it's usually celebrated with pancakes; "to shrive" is to confess and be absolved of your sins. "Did you shrive today?" "No, I shrove Tuesday.")

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I adore pancakes.

Alas, they are too difficult for me to make.

the bluefox, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

You could have someone make them for you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

they arent that hard. i sent you an email with a recipe, the trick is to flip when all of the bubbles in the batter have popped.

anthony, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(there's alway packet batter mix that you just add an egg and water to PF :)).

i don't know if i can be bothered myself though tonight...

ALSO Tep said:

There's a baby -- plastic now, usually -- hidden in the cake

so IT USED TO BE A REAL BABY??????

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no one to make them for me.

the bluefox, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

mr fox.
come over to my place.
we have atheists and jews.

anthony, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ms luna.
come over to my place.
you can pretend it's Mardi Gras all you like.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it used to be a sugar baby carsmile. Sometimes it is a bean.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(there's alway packet batter mix that you just add an egg and water to PF :)).

WTF?! So this 'batter mix' is just flour and milk powder? That you have to add another whole 2 (that's TWO) ingredients to? AAAAAAAAARGH WHY ARE THINGS LIKE THIS SOLD?*

Well, that's some of my packet mix rage out of the way.

*because morons buy them

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna claim it used to be a real baby. Damn.

Metal or ceramic, I think -- you can still get either some places, they're just less common (and more dangerous to fillings).

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

*i r a moron...

but it's all weighed out and it tells you how much water to put in and everything, mumblemumble...

basically, despite being a competent cook, i have a fear of:

a. batter
b. white sauce

i think i ph34r the lumps...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

There are no lumps if you add the liquid gradually and whisk well between additions. You're an intelligent man, Steve, take it easy. Batter is fun. So is assault.

White sauce is a bit tricky though.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it was also because i never used to have flour in the house, so buying batter mix was less hassle than having a bag of flour lying around for 6 months after and then getting thrown away...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Carsmile I use the even more moronic shake and pour pancake mix!

ms luna.
come over to my place.
you can pretend it's Mardi Gras all you like.

I'm on my way.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i ate good pancake, listened to queen, watched daria, and i am giving up nothing for lent.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry, push always comes to Shrove.
