Lofts vs. Apartments

Which do you prefer? I like lofts when I am in them, and they are already decorated, but I can't imagine decorating one myself.

This one, though, looks beautiful.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I laugh at newbuild apartments made up to look like lofts.

I guess I am a loft rockist.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

That looks v. v. awesome.

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The kitchen is just a corner of one big room? Blech.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The kitchen units look a bit tacky.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with N. The whole point of a loft is lost when the building has "units."

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

NO! RAD!

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

???

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

What?

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

units?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

They are reburbished! This one is more soulless.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Units," as in "NEW LOFT UNITS WITH KITCHENS & BATH"

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

???

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant the cupboards and stuff - is 'units' not the right word?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

So loftists, post pictures of some real lofts then.

maypang (maypang), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I am worried I will be savaged by a NY photographer for doing that.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Post pics of pretty apartments then.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe when Phil gets home he will take pictures of our loft.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Carey and Phil's place is really very nice - unlike a lot of the lofts I've seen in NYC.

hstencil, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry if that sounds snarky, wasn't meant to be a backhanded compliment. Their place really is great.

hstencil, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno, i really dont like loft spaces that are too newly-rennovated looking... sorta tacky. i kinda like exposed brick and pipes hanging around and shit..

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the kitchen units in that one mary posted are horrible, and it looks far too shiny.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

And it has a skylight. I'd have to nail a small rug or blanket over that. As a youth I'd love to see the morning light - "All right, another all nighter, I'm a party warrior!" Now it's like FUCK OFF REGULAR WORLD. I'm pretty sure Ronan can sympathize with me. If not, give him a few more years.

Le Coq, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Such purists. I could deal with the kitchen if I could get that view. So post pictures of the type of apartment I should move into.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Just e-mailled that picture to a friend of mine who's moving to NY (from Paris) this summer. Its semms pretty cheap (compared to London). How far's that from Manhattan?

winterland, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Not far, a couple stops into Brooklyn on the L train.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

revive, I am considering buying a condo loft! It's only in the dream stages though and may remain there because I haven't done the thing that tells you how big of a mortgage you can get.

For real, has anyone ever lived in a loft?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 11 March 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I looked at a room in one in East Chinatown the other day. Alas, was not for me. Painting your floors black just doesn't gell with my aesthetic vibe.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i have painted black hardwood floors thanks to a previous depressive tenant.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

OK mary, I'm sorry but those NY student lofts look like rooms in the prison infirmary! what's up with the the institutional green? the lead furniture? the TV bolted into the corner of the room?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't apologize: the student lofts were examples of the mainstreamification of lofts. The Appalachian Lofts is an interesting concept.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.koretlofts.com/

My friend is selling those. They're gorgeous, in the Gastown heritage area, but right now there're a lot of crackheads in the surrounding area. My friend says they'll all be gone by 2006 for the pre-Olympic and failing that he says he'll kill the crackheads and bums himself. He's like that. He's been trying to get my parents to buy one but they just bought some Spectrum aka the most cornily advertised development in Canada. Look at teh retard in the headphones.

LC, Friday, 12 March 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

A true humanist.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

He's the ultimate yuppie savage. Once at a bar I overheard him ask a girl (in his trademark heavy Korean accent) to come home with him and she replied, "Do you know how many times you've ASKED ME THAT?!?"

Unbelievably, she went home with him.

okay we're not going to buy but I think we found some good lofts to rent. this building is getting fixed up:

http://www.builtstlouis.net/opos/evanreid-gsadams.jpg

there are more, nicer-looking pictures on this page.

It used to be the Bell Telephone building, and my dad used to work for Bell in Indiana. I told my mom that we were looking at it, and she said that when she and my dad were dating, he would call her and route his calls through that building! This is the best story ever!!!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

that is a totally cool-looking building!!

That is such a cute story, it would be nice if the loft works out for you.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

:) I am way too excited over this coincidence.

Sorry about the link, apparently you have to pull down the menu for 'Bell Telephone Building' if you still care.

I lived in a loft for about seven years, and it was great. But, I tell ya.....doors and walls that divide rooms are mighty nice, now that I have'em.

Looked like this.... ::::::sigh:::::::

Teeny that's lovely!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 16 July 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

That does look really nice.

Me, I'm living in an actual HOUSE now, and I'm loving it. No more apartment life for me. Woo!

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Friday, 16 July 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

seven years pass...

Hey, so I'm going to look at a place tomorrow that's actually a studio instead of a 1br. There's a little nook for a bed and dresser, and I could probably sequester that space with a room divider of some sort, but I've never lived in a place with a floorplan quite that open before. Anyone here live in a studio/bachelor/efficiency apartment/loft and have any pointers to share about doing so?

Don't even know yet if I'll actually take it, but I may end up with one before my hunt is over and any tips for living in that kind of space would be appreciated.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 June 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

We've successfully used Ikea Expedit shelves as room dividers. In the lofts we've lived in, I liked having a screened off bedroom area - felt more private/cozier.

Jaq, Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I was thinking more of a screen, but that would actually be more practical (and I've already got some black-brown IKEA stuff anyway).

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/images/products/expedit-shelving-unit__0092703_PE229404_S4.JPG

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

Here's a flickr set of the smallest loft - 2 6x6 expedits full of records screened off the bedroom area and 2 5x5 expedits full of books were against the far wall: http://www.flickr.com/photos/illiterati/sets/72157602064290691/with/1481187354/

This set is the huge loft we moved to (with unfortunately crazy landlord otherwise we would possibly still be there) where we used the same expedits to carve an office space out of the huge open plan: http://www.flickr.com/photos/illiterati/sets/72157606330731094/

In this apartment, the (tiny) dining room was behind an angled 5x5 expedit: http://farm1.staticflickr.com/127/412629593_025b7c4182.jpg

Now, the 5x5 expedits are used in the basement of the house we are in to hold books and create an office area while the 6x6 ones are upstairs lining the walls of the guest/music/other office room.

Jaq, Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

Oops - those are 5x5 and 4x4 - don't know why I was thinking 6x6 when I am sitting right here looking at one

Jaq, Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks for sharing those photos. The shelves look really nice in real world applications.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

(Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of books or records anymore, but I guess I could curtain one side of the unit and use the other side to put my folded clothes in.)

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)

You can also get baskets that fit the sections and use them to store socks/smaller items.

Replacing the coffee table we had with 4 storage ottomans was a big plus - that's where all the office supplies/loose cables/spare blankets are stored even now.
