The people's republis of London

Monaco's done it, Singapore's done it. Does a big international city like London need to be part of a nation-state anymore?

So, what would it be like if , in the intersts of devolution, London seceded from the UK and set up on it's own? Would we survive? Would the rest of you miss us?

winterland, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

And hopefully if we did become a republic I'd learn how to spell it.

winterland, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The M25 would turn into a moat.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Better plan: the North and South Circular becomes a moat.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Or the circle line?

winterland, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that's too tight a cordon. No moat between me and Brick Lane.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, stop trying to keep us out of London!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

republis? cordon? moist?

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously though, rather than this slow, piece-meal devolution of power that we have with regional assemblies, wouldn't it just be easier for London to leave. I'm not sure who exactly would object to this. I can't see Glaswegians and Mancunians having a problem with political desicions about their lives being taken out of the hands of the London establishment, and I think most Londoners would love it.

winterland, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say that enough ppl already think that there is no life outside of London. Actually yeah cast the fuxors aside!

Blackpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

London would keep all its City money and be very, very rich. Housing prices would skyrocket and all the lowly infrastructure workers would probabaly have to commute for three hours to get to work.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no change there then

chris (chris), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

And have their passports surgically implanted in their retinae etc.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Do it, we don't want you in our country. Once you've opted to stay in London, you shouldn't be able to leave.

Blackpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Stanley Holloway and Margaret Rutherford to thread!

Once you've opted to stay in London, you shouldn't be able to leave.

Blimey - the republic's only been going half a day and it's already a fascist state.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

While we're leaving..we'll need a flag. Get your entries in here:

winterland, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

heh heh, blackpanther...

i don't really like this idea as i like feeling part of the larger area we know as Britain even though i spend 97% of my time in London

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh.

my.

god.

(flag) WORST. IDEA. EVER.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

it should be a malformed, one legged pigeon, on a yellow and black striped background

chris (chris), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

We need somewhere to dump our waste.

Hoxton?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i have to work round that area and it's grotty enough thanks (but am actually very grateful as most of the rest of the company has had to relocate to Milton facking keynes!)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

How long will it take before Kilburn attempts to break away and we have to send the troops in?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The Taking Of Balham - 1 2 3

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the taking of PECKHAM 1 2 3, obv, steve...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

no mine is better

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Taking of Packlham - 1 2 3

Does that solve anything?

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

it solves the problem of me forgetting about CHRIS PACKHAM

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Bollocks to the Provinces shall be the motto of the Republic. And that includes Hendon.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

what would be the structure of the london football league?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Arsenal, Spudz and the Chelse all suffer a drastic decline in crowds as their fans live in Hertfordshire and Surrey and are forbidden to enter the Republic. West Ham fans are prevented from entering from essex. Ditto Charlton from Kent.

Palace are voted out of the league as everyone finds getting to Shitehurst a pain in the arse. Millwall are banned because there are no decent pubs near the ground.

The big clubs are thus QPR, Brentford and Orient, but they are all second rate as AFC Wimbledon win it every year through their aggressive identification with london, being the only team of the lot to be set up explicitly to be from london. Huzzah!

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(except for their ground being in Surrey, so AFC Wimbledon are forced to gorund-share with Crystal Palace. Hmm.)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No; the Republic orders that plough lane is rebuilt.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

and is re-named, the new new den? ;¬)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone likes us, but we couldn't give a flying fuck. You know this.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT M ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't Singapore kicked out, rather than seceding? My grandfather was running the University of Singapore while all this was happening with riots and things, and it was slightly more complicated than a secession. I'd ask him, but he's, you know, dead now.

I'm much more on the "Make NYC a State" bandwaggon. I mean, London has been running the UK since the middle ages. If London doesn't like a king, they get rid of him and bring in a new one from Holland. It's happened before, you know.

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, Singapore became a city state more cause it's neighbours didn't want it than some deep ambition to be independent...but...see how well it's done..perhaps towing London to a better climate might help...

Mayor of London's flag

curlysimon, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a huge expanse of white with a tiny red x would make a fantastic London flag

chris (chris), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

From the lib-dems mayoral candidate

The other depicts a shield emblazoned with a football, tennis rackets and a knife and fork, surmounted by Tower Bridge and crowned with a pigeon.

"Yes, it is a pigeon," Mr Hughes's spokesman confirmed to Guardian Unlimited. "We were going to have one with the St George's Cross and Ken behind it - with Ken crossed out - but we thought that it would be a bit political and cheap, really."

winterland, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The new flag could cause issues among ethnic minorities?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And cricket lovers and pigeon-haters

winterland, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

From the indispensible flagspot.net

This is the banner of arms of the Corporation of the City of London. Note however that the City of London does not include all of what is commonly known as London, but the ancient city only, from Fleet St eastward ("the Square Mile"), which is now the financial centre of London. Its authority does not extend to the adjacent City of Westminster, nor to the surrounding boroughs, which together constitute Greater London.

Woah, the Flag of the Corporation of London has an upside down cross in it!! Peter Ackroyd to thread!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

N, the lib/dem's haven't chosen their flag yet...you should enter

winterland, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The new flag could cause issues among ethnic minorities?

What, like Northerners and Welsh people and so forth?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes - there's no way the Southerners can appropriate the pigeon.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking of South Londoners.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

South london of course will be a vassal state to The Republic of London.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And renamed South OF London.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I reckon it would be bloody expensive, though I'm in favour of Islington being annexed :)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I think i might run for this then...

winterland, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i was assuming this would be revived with this week's time out cover, which is what winterland's pic is...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yet again, the incestuous London press in ripping off ILX's hard thought ideas shockah! Grrrr!

(Read the article. It was quite silly. Would have helped if they'd talked to actual Londoners rather than a bunch of shit artists.)

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Would have helped if they'd talked to actual Londoners rather than a bunch of shit artists

And ILX is chiefly piss artists, so...

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The article's infuriating...Robert Elms appears to be the only one who has thought about the question in any way. He talks about the differences between urban and rural culture and him and Tony Travers are the onlt people who realise that it might be a good thing for the rest of the country as well as London. (Travers says "the Islington classes would no longer have a vote on whether or not people could go hunting")
Most of the rest of the article is spent going on about how rich London is and how if we could keep all 'our' money how wonderful London life would be....and if that's grounds for independence how long before Kensington secedes?

Classic - "waterloo sunset" for national anthem

Dud - Sheringham up front for 'London Utd."

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Could London actually survive without the Home Counties? because the fuXors who actually provide the wealth and wherewithall to feed our taxbase - do you really think that they actually live within the M25?

(Where *do* you actually pay income tax? Where you earn your money (i.e. London) or where you have your principle residence (i.e. a mansion somewhere in Herts.)? International tax law and tax exiles could get very sticky.)

The River Kate (kate), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

No home counties - no commuters - no Evening substandard!!!!

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

you pay your taxes to London

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh - hark the modern Richard II.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Is a republis some fantastic combination of a republic and a chablis?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Unhablis, no.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it's a republic and a coulis (coulis made from puree of Royal Family)

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

royal treasury was in Winchester during Richard II's time IIRC

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)
