Hoboken vs. Jersey City

Does any of the on-the-waterfront vibe remain in Hoboken? What are the best restaurants and bars? How is the Clam Broth House?

What are the best diners in JC? Which is the preferable destination, Journal Square or Grove?

(No ulterior motives this time, just curious.) I'm getting accustomed to the PATH. It used to freak me out a little.

There is an awesome Cuban restaurant in Hoboken -- of course, I forget the name. Said restaurant is reason enough to move to Hoboken.

I'll e-mail the people I ate Cuban with to determine just where the hell I am talking about.

Grove is good as far as there being more different types of places to eat (Pakistani, Italian). I think the Cuban place is Carib Cafe or something like that. I don't like it. Bland as hell. There's better Cuban in West New York, but you need to look as it's mostly Colombian and Central American there now. If you like Indian food, get off at Journal Square and walk north towards Newark Ave. Amazing Southern Indian food to be found in the snack shops and restaurants there (Patel Snacks is my fave for its Samosa Chaat). Otherwise, the JSQ area is run down. Oh, yeah - there's also a fish place called Morgan Seafood on Kennedy Blvd. that makes excellent grilled fish and seafood, Egyptian style. No frills but inexpensive and filling. Free pita and tahini as soon as you sit down. There's a good diner up in the JC Heights, forget the name, but it's on the way to Union City along Kennedy Blvd.

Hoboken? Loads of good restaurants along Washington St. , but I really don't like the Clam Broth House. I thought they were coasting on their reputation last time I was there. That was three years ago, though.

Enjoy!

the clam broth house is gone ... the building collapsed about a year ago. they even took down the sign.

and forget about "on the waterfront." that hoboken is as dead as sinatra (which reminds me, hoboken's got this weird sinatra fetish even though he got the hell outta there as soon and as fast as he could).

and the grove street area is nicer than around journal square. though journal square is more working-class than ghetto.

Are you talking about La Isla, on Washington St.? I miss that place more than I thought I would.

I just miss being able to walk a block away from my apartment and grabbing a hot roast beef sub from Vito's Deli. Some of the best fresh mozzarella on a sandwich I've ever had.

The Cuban place is a little BYOB cafe on a street corner. I realize this is not particularly helpful.

one year passes...
It's called Zafra, on the corner of Willow and 3rd. Bring your own bottle of wine and they'll mix sangria for you. It can be fun to just go for the appetizers and skip the main course.

Jersey City Councilman Steven Lipski is No. 1 threat at Washington club

Jersey City Councilman Steven Lipski

A drunken Jersey City councilman was arrested for urinating on a crowd of concertgoers from the balcony of a Washington nightclub, police and club sources said Saturday.

Councilman Steven Lipski was caught relieving himself onto several revelers at the 9:30 Club during a concert by a Grateful Dead tribute band Friday night, club sources said.

"He was very drunk," the source said, noting that it wasn't the first time Lipski had caused a ruckus at the popular concert venue.

"We've dealt with this man before," the source added. "He's never peed on anybody, but he gets really belligerent and drunk."

Lipski, 44, was hauled out of the club about 9:50 p.m. after staffers spotted him in the act on the concert hall's second-floor balcony and called the cops.

The crass councilman, who is serving his second term in office since getting elected in 2001, was charged with simple assault, police said.

Attempts to reach Lipski were unsuccessful Saturday night. His aide, Irina Zaki, said the councilman was in Washington Friday night, but she had no knowledge of his arrest.

The lurid incident marks the second time in recent years that a Jersey City pol was caught with his pants down.

Photos showing Jerramiah Healy, still a councilman at the time, naked and passed out on his front stoop were widely circulated in 2004 days before he was elected mayor.

No way, are you serious?

Evan, Thursday, 29 September 2016 15:17 (nine years ago)

Yeah, I take that particular train almost every morning. I'm thinking of all the people I see on a daily basis who would've still been on it at Hoboken. All strangers for the most part but some of them I've been seeing for years and they just start to feel like a small part of your life after a while, kind of a typical NY commuting thing I think. I'll be looking out for my usual conductor tomorrow.

early rejecter, Thursday, 29 September 2016 15:33 (nine years ago)

Yikes. Glad you aren't part of the majority that rides it all the way in.

We heard enough sirens this morning that we got curious. And on the main road in Hoboken when sirens grab your attention it means something significant is going down.
